Title: Government Funding
Post by: CTCREP on February 09, 2013, 01:59:12 PM
The Government has provided £62 million for Councils to improve facilities for cycling. Recently our local councillor responsible for cycling came to Stockport's Cycle User Group - a rare appearance - and was delighted to tell us that Stockport was to get a major cycle storage facility - ie not just a few cabinets - at the Bus Station. When every cyclist in the room said no-one was going to cycle to the bus station to go somewhere they could get to more quickly and easily by staying on their bikes he eventually agreed to take the issue back to those more responsible for the idea.  He returned several weeks later to say everything was alright, there was no room at the bus station anyway so now the facility would be placed by the Plaza. Obviously this is marginally better for the few people who shop or work near the Plaza but is of no use for those shopping or working at Portwood. Regrettably it looks as though thousands of pounds are going to be wasted on a White Elephant, and it does nothing to make it easier for cyclists to access Stockport in order to use the facility. This money should be spent on extending Connect 2 and other similar projects through to Stockport where, in practically every instance the cyclists will then ride to their place of work or the shop they wish to visit, and in the reverse direction could encourage more people living in Stockport to visit Marple. How do we stop Officials wasting money that is intended to be for our benefit?

I have had a meeting with he Leader of the Council about providing funds for employers to provide cycling facilities at the workplace. We need to get people thinking that cycling is a normal means of transport not just a leisure activity, although it can be as well, so we need to get more people cycling to work. Thankfully there has been a substantial upturn in cycle comuting across Stockport this last 12 months.

Brilliant OP, in terms of bike parks, we just need simple bike stands that are CCTV monitored & then we need more of them.

Why not? I don't think they will ever charge for bike parking.

Why worry about being watched if you're not doing anything wrong?

It doesn't worry me in the slightest, I don't have any paranoid concerns about being watched. I am not doing anything wrong or that I don't want anyone to see,  I assume that any cameras are there to keep me safe, to observe and record anyone engaging in illegal or antisocial activity, which may impact on me.
