MARPLE IN ACTION HAVE ORGANISED A PROTEST MARCH ON SAT 20th August at 2pm starting in MARPLE precinct and then on into the Memorial Park.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE PEOPLE OF MARPLE AND ALL SURROUNDING AREAS THAT WILL SUFFER AS A RESULT OF A SUPERMARKET BEING BUILT ON HIBBERT LANE, GET TOGETHER AND SHOW CAMSFC THAT THIS IS NOT HAPPENING AND THAT WE ARE ALL UNITED AGAINST THE LOSS OF OUR COMMUNITY,SHOPS AND OUR VILLAGE TYPE WAY OF LIFE.

We will be working with the police who are involved and are aware of the event. The last meeting in the park was peaceful why should this be any different.

watching the news tonight also made me think about your protest...... It started off as a straight forward protest until people from other areas decided to join in and caused devastation to Tottenham...
Now I know Marple people do not behave that way, but this forum is being monitored from all over at the moment and some might see it as a excuse to behave as discusting as those down south.

Just a thought, would it not be better if the march went from Memorial park, through the centre of marple and ended at the Hibbert Lane site. This would have more impact and also be a good press opportunity for photos at the site with all concerned residents

Have you not seen the news today? it has spread across the country. Its not about a shooting in London anymore, its about what people can get away with by looting and setting fire to peoples homes and businesses. If you have a open page on facebook, with details of a protest how do you know opportunists will not join you with the intention to cause trouble? IF it was to happen then we wouldn't have any local shops. I know it might seem like scarmongering but this is happening right now in our country, in Manchester/Salford.

Please find attached a letter from Andrew Stunell MP and a petition relating to his campaign 'Get the College to Think Again'.
As he points out, so far there has been no planning application and no sale of land.
Mr Stunell has written to the College Principal and Governing Corporation (the college board of governors) asking them to think again before it is too late.

Rest assured I will be there and have recruited some of the Bridgers, my vehicles are displaying posters as well as my trailers and other machines (power to the people)!!

A protest at this moment in time is not appropriate ( in my opinion ) and would be in bad taste .... I actually think a protest for your cause is a good thing .... but not how things go at the mo , apparently there was trouble in stockport tonight ( but dont take that as gospel )

also.. if you march across or on roads.. or there are too many people expected to walk on the pavement.. then you have to inform the police and ask their permission to march... crossing from memorial park means we WILL need police permission... Just through the precinct and to the college you might get away with!
also.. though I guess you ve thought of this already.. you ll need stewards.. legally, but actually.. having been there... you just do!!

As MM has already stated, the police have been informed, which means that they will be present.
On the topic of stewards i would recommend having a contingency of around 10/15, incase numbers of people participating are larger than expected, ideally you want to maintain a ratio of either 1 steward for every 5 "civies" or, for situations were you have a huge number of people you can lax that to 1 steward for every 10 "civies" (civie = civilian taking part in the march) also make sure that the stewards have a clear chain of command, and as many of them as possible have a radio or other form of communication device. It may also be worth having a designated first aider, maybe 2, just to be on the safe side :)
One last point : make sure that you have a centeral command post, it makes for easier CMD&COM than having your commanders scattered all over the place. And it might be worth having a few checklists made for various incidents that might occur, so your not going crazy trynig to think what to do :)

According to this site : http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A4288999 you don't have to inform the concil, but you are legally obliged to inform the police, and make sure that they give you permission. So providing the police have OKed it then we should be good to go :)

Great that this protest is being organised but there are a lot of Marple residents on holiday this month...hopefully we will get a good turnout.

I think we can expect an excellent turn out, I've spoken to quite a few people while posting leaflets and many of them intend to march on Saturday!

I have spoken to many people who have not as yet had leaflets and they are all interested in coming, many off my estate are dead set against it, because of the increase in traffic, not only on Stockport road, but our small estate roads, that are currently used as a cut through.
I will definately be attending and bringing the kids.

Meet on Market Street 2pm
Proceed onto Church Lane
Hibbert Lane (short stop for photo)
Proceed onto Carver Road
Edwards Way
Cross Lane
Stockport Road
Into Memorial Park and proceed to the Boules Court.
Public to join hands around the marked out perimeter on the field to show the approx. size of the proposed supermarket (another photo)
Address by David Hoyle, Chairman of Marple in Action
Those who don’t want to walk, can go straight to the Memorial Park and wait for the procession to arrive (hopefully 2.30pm) and join in with the hand holding
The Information Stall will be open as usual on Market Street from 10am – 4pm with the petition

How does anybody know the size of the proposed supermarket?

Do you actually mean the size of the CAMSFC site? Not the same think at all. Could this just be more scaremongering and spreading FUD?

There's a potential risk to overstating how large any supermarket may be. Whilst the site is physically big enough to build something the size of the Portwood Tesco, I think it's highly unlikely the actual proposals will be anywhere near that large. I suspect, that the proposed supermarket would end up being of a similar size to the Glossop tesco. If you think about it, Glossop is larger than Marple, and has a bigger catchment area as the nearest supermarkets are stalybridge or hyde, both 5 miles away, where as there's plenty of competition only 2 or 3 miles away in bredbury and hazel grove. So building something bigger than Glossop in Marple doesn't appear to make sense.
The problem with focusing on the potential size of any supermarket is, if everyone thinks there's going to be something the size of Portwood built, there's a danger that there will be a sense of relief when it turns out that it's only going to be the size of Glossop, and that will soften public opinion.

Why and who is recommending Tesco's in to our towns and Communities, every corner or Town you pass there is a Tesco's.
I am not a Tesco shopper never have been, and I feel sorry for all the people who use them, "Yes I have heard all the rights and wrongs about having one of these place's, but did you not move in to these small pretty communities for a reason!! To support your small business, speak with the people in your community, let your children enjoy open space, respect and love your community..
Also these so called celebrities who advertise for them, why? MONEY.

Well I hope today will give a clear message to the College that the people of MARPLE and surrounding areas say NO ! to a supermarket development on HIBBERT Lane . What a fantastic turnout saying that we only had two weeks to plan it and it's right in the middle of the holiday season. This is the first of many that are being planned the next ones will be organised for a week day .

I would have to guess 600+ were there. It was really quite something to see. Congratulations to all who participated but especially the organisers.

I've been told that our march had no less than 900 people to a huge potential 1000!
So the passionate people of Marple have shown themselves, and quite rightfully too, and will not be easily pushed over.
So far so good, keep it up people.

I did Tweet another picture but it didn't come out so well. However, the Stockport Road picture was retweeted by @Stockport_info (https://twitter.com/#!/Stockport_info) and by @Stockport_FOE (https://twitter.com/#!/Stockport_FOE) (Friends of the Earth) so reached a fair few people across Stockport too.

Just had a couple of phone calls from people who had gone to one of the regular Sat Morning council surgeries in the library. They say that they were advised that it was best not to attend the protest March by the councillor holding this mornings surgery as there maybe trouble. PR like that from one of our elected members is not acceptable.

Do you know who it was? Surely if they had heard there was going to be trouble then it would have been their duty to report it to the police.

We were informed that it was Cllr Candler but he was at the March today. I intend to ask him if he did say this and to explain his rational for doing so.
