Title: Marple area chippies
Post by: Dave on October 16, 2010, 02:07:32 PM
Passing through Marple Bridge today, I noticed that the Chinese takeaway opposite the Royal Scot has closed, and will be replaced by a fish and chip shop (not a Chinese one).  Let's hope it's a good one  :P

It opened today, we found out as we decided on the drive home to try a chippy tea rather than going to the shop to buy something we'd then have to cook.

Sadly, so did loads of other people and the chippy was rather overwhelmed! When I arrived the chips looked well-cooked - firm, golden, delicious. However, the queue was so big that as each batch of chips came out of the fryer they were immediately served and the we'd to wait for the next batch. By the time I was served *an hour* later, I was starving, and the chips weren't as nice, but I needed to eat. I'd already had that horrible moment of realising just how long I'd already spent waiting and realising that even if I left to grava a pizza it would take just as long, so I had no other option. When we got home we were sadly disappointed.

I don't think they were in any way expecting the amount of people who turned up - they'd run out of haddock by 6pm and weren't doing scallops as they'd chipped all the potatoes! I just hope they managed to serve all the people who were waiting when I left, at that point the queue was half as big again as when I joined it so I reckon they'd have been queueing for going on 90 minutes!

In all fairness, it's opening day and as I indicated above, numbers were high. I think we might give them tile to settle in before we give them another go, like I said the chips did look good when they had the time to fry them properly. Hope it goes well for them in the next few weeks

On Thursday my daughter visited the New Chippy in Marple Bridge with 3 of her friends ( all aged 12 yearsand good quiet girls).

They had had a heavy sledging session in the park for 4 hrs when they decided to visit the Chippy.  Unfortunately my daughter in her haste to get out in the snow had not taken any money but 2 of her friends had when they decided to share 2 lots of chips and a bit of a warm in the chippy atmosphere before returning home.

The Chippy staff asked the girls who had not brought chips to leave despite the Chippy being empty.

My daughter was very upset.

Is this good practice for a new Chippy. On an extremely cold day there was no warmth of spirit in this new establishment?

Well Minx, I am very sorry to read of the incident at the Chip Shop.

I naturally assume that your daughter and her Friends were well behaved and so I think it was crass of the owner or representative to act in that way towards children.

Obviously there was no thought of cementing goodwill with prospective future customers.

I shall make a point of doing a mystery shop there and let the Fish Fryers Federation have a report of my visit

We were planning a big fish & chip supper last Saturday so I called in at lunchtime to see if I could order by phone and the staff were extremely helpful.  In the end one of our party called in to buy them without pre ordering and I must say they were delicious.

Not sure my experience is shared by everyone but I have tried now three times to buy fish and chips from the Marple Bridge chippy and have had three very disappointing experiences. Each time I have tried to give them another chance.

Tonight within our order we asked for a Steak pudding for my wife only to get home to find I'd been given a pie. Obviously it's not the end of he world, but given that I've not had a good experience yet and given here are other businesses around Marple, maybe they will be more attentive to their customers orders.

Not been for a few weeks, but always have a great meal from the chippy in the village - Steve seems to really know his stuff, and takes pride in his work.

Lovely stuff!

I have been a regular customer to the Marple Bridge Fryery since day one and thought it was time I shouted from the 'crows nest' to Steven, Julie and their attentive team. The quality of their food is second to none and they thrive to give no less than 100% quality and satisfaction to all customers that walk through their doors. I am being truthful in saying that I have not tasted better chips anywhere else and my children cannot wait for Fridays as that's 'Chippy Night' !! Well done guys!!!! ;D

For me, the best chippy in Marple is Goyt Fish Bar.

The queues out of the door of a night would suggest that I'm not the only one to think that. I'm not sure I've ever had better. Just a shame that its hardly ever open - but I guess that just makes you appreciate it when you get the chance to visit.

Not sure how much of  a winner it can be when it runs out of fish at 6.00pm on a Saturday evening - very mediocre and pricey .

Well today I was going to try some lunchtime chips, I noticed that the chippy had a grade 5 listing which was displayed in the window
issued by Stockport MBC. As I looked through the window I saw the lady at the cooking range attending to the cooking, she had long hair hanging over the range and whatever was cooking. Had she been wearing protective headwear to prevent hair falling into the chips, I might have gone in, but on seeing that- I changed my mind- not hygienic to my mind.

I hasten to add it was NOT the Town Street fryer, so as I can't mention the name on this site, work it out and take a look next time you pass a chippy

I would welcome advise on the approx cost of fish, chips (and peas if poss).

And whether they are served in insulated containers or paper wrapped from:

Hawk Green

Town St.

The Goyt Chippy

Derby Way.

Bare in mind a cod fillet will set you back £2.70 before it's cooked. I'd like to see chipped being brave and moving to the more sustainable pollock.

Thanks Heritage for the link, but I was more interested in the price from our Local Chippys.

My question about the wrappings is related to the distance from Home to the chippy and keeping them as hot a possible

I very rarely use 'chippies' as they are all so variable (as proved by the discussions on another thread).  It used to be that a 'chip shop meal' was a cheap meal which is no longer the case - plus the cost of fuel if you have to drive to one.

If the chips have been kept 'hot' rather than fresh out of the fat then they can be quite cool by the time you reach home.  I have, in the past, zapped them in the microwave to bring them up to a more acceptable temperature.

I have a decent thermostatically controlled (safe) deep fat fryer (which can be totally dismantled and all but the element can go in the dishwasher).  My own family prefer my home made chips to any purchased from a chippy and you can always get decent 'frozen' fish to bake in the oven while your chips are cooking.

I'm actually considering trying one of these 'new fangled' dry air chip cookers as that would be even safer than 'deep fat'.

You can also make nice 'healthy' chips by the following method:-

Don't peel the potatoes just cut them into wedges.  Place on a baking tray, skin side down and bake in the oven on gas 6, middle shelf, for approx 30-40 mins.  You can sprinkle the wedges with a little salt and pepper before cooking or spray them with 'one cal'. The cut sides of the potatoes brown up nicely while the insides should be soft. Enjoy!!

Lily - doesn't all that faffing around with air frying and cooking the food at home - nice though it sounds - sort of miss the point of what going to the chippy is all about?  :(

Judging by the unpleasant smell emanating from the Derby Way shop suggests it might be best avoided.

There's a chippy on Hollins Lane in Marple. Fish and chips costs £3. The product isn't bad as chippies go.

The only time we are likely to use a take away is when we don’t have time to cook; this is normally when we are late home for some reason.   It is odd that fish and chip shops shut so early.

Are there any that are open late in Marple?

The other evening my wife and I had a romantic supper, sat in the car park in the moonlight We had one portion of fish and chips between us served nicely in a container with forks and sauces, served by pleasant staff all wearing protective clothing

Absolutely Delicious! and where was this wonderfull chippy?
Town St, Marple Bridge.

To get any praise from me, it's got to be good!

Well done Town St Fryer!

I think when thinking about the price you need to consider the quality of the product and the consideration the establishement takes for our environment.

A great example of this is my preferred chippy, the Town Street Fryer.  They will wrap your purchase however you request but commonly, or if to 'eat now' your food comes in a container - these are bio-degradeable and cause no long term impact if they end up as litter, or if they end up on land fill.  They can also keep tabs on (if) how much litter is generated if customers throw packaging on the floor - I see nothing from the Town Street Fryer anywhere in the village - I say this with confidence because I regularly litter pick the area with the Marple Bridge Association.

Quality of product - what does the menu say?.... Hopefully like at the Town Street Fryer the fish is named on the menu boards - for example COD... or ..HADDOCK... watch out next time your in a chippy - if the menu simply states... 'fish' or 'white fish' the chances are the establishment are using something known as Panga... or Vietnamiese Cat Fish - this comes from fish wholesalers at a very, very cheap price and a profitable alternative to Cod.  The fish is farmed from polluted rivers and typically lives on sewage - although nothing is proven there are many horror stories about this poor substitute.

One comment I found on Panga read:

"What appears is shocking. Horror stories of it originating from a highly polluted Mekong river, containing high level poisons, being frozen in contaminated river water and injected with hormones derived from urine.  So there it was, a ranting, ‘don’t even go there’ article in the making, a nauseus feeling from the thought of what I’d eaten, and most recently, uneaten fillets in the garbage."

Think I'll have fish and chips for tea!

Peace Out.

Alan - maybe you should remove your comment as people often don't get as far as the last paragraph before they stop reading.  This thread is called 'NEW CHIPPY IN MARPLE BRIDGE' so people may be forgiven for believing the offending establishment is in Marple Bridge - when it is not.

Maybe start a new thread relevant to the point.

I assume you've taken it upon yourself to inform the Scores on the Doors chaps at the Town Hall of this cooking crime?

"What when it opens at 5.30 pm !  If you think running out of fish after 30 mins is good management then you clearly have low standards"

It opens at 4.30pm until 7.30pm normallly by the looks of the sign on the door - so 6pm would be a good half way into a shift I'd say.  Like all places I guess on that particular day the guys at the Town Street Fryer had a very busy evening.

I'd be more concerned if they never ran out of fish - much like the meat trade, the piece you eat does not arrive at the shop ready to go - it needs to be prepared/cut - the fact they ran out is a sign of quality, fresh produce and careful preperation rather than poor management.  I tend to go in once a week and they generally don't run out unless very busy - and then it's only at the very end of the evening.

Said it before, and I'll say it again - best in the area.

Something going on at the Town Street Fryer.... looks like Steve's invested in a brand spanking new 'range' - more room for frying his lovely fish I understand.... which means quicker at busy periods!

Good on him.... will be sampling it tonight.

....and it was a new range!

Steve at the chippy has put his hand in his pocket and invested in a new piece of equipment - it's a monster!  Confirmed it means waiting times reduced at busy times as he can now do more at the same time.

Enjoyed my tea from there on Tues evening and can confirm the produce is still as tasty as ever!
