Title: Marple Poetry Competition 2009/10
Post by: admin on October 17, 2009, 09:06:13 AM
Following the success of the Marple Short Story Competition last year we're pleased to be helping to promote the Marple Poetry Competition for 2009/10 and this is now featured on the main web site home page. The competition has two categories: Formal or Free Verse and Humerous Verse. The competition closing date for entries is 2 June 2010 with results announced exactly 1 month later.

For a bit of fun you may wish to post your favourite humorous verse or Limerick here, although it will not be considered as an official entry to the competition. If you do, just one rule - keep it clean and suitable for family viewing!

For more information visit www.marplewriting.org.uk or download a full information pack with entry forms here: www.marple-uk.com/community/Marple_Poetry_Competition.pdf

You can also read more about the results of last year's Short Story Competition at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/iancreed/htdocs/index.html

                              Don't count your chickens

                          I thought I would enter a poem
The prize it will be mine
                          I burnt the midnight oil
                          Rhyming every line

                          My subject would be Marple
I'll stand a chance with that?
It won't be very long now
till' the prize lands on my mat

I followed the Marple websites link
                          To the competitions news
                          The winning entry wasn't mine
It was about a pair of shoes!

Just been reading on the winners page about Sonnets,Villanelles, Sestinas, American short form and white space? Never heard of some of them. Dont think this competition is for your average amateur poet its all a bit heavy! :o

I just don't get it! Maybe that's why I prefer Rock Music!!

However, I do remember doing at bit of poetry for my English Lit 'O' Level in 1979 and I did quite like this one from a Mr John Betjeman -

alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors, soliloquy etc. all terms I learned from Mrs Greenwood (a rather good teacher @ Marple Hall). I still prefer a silly limerick to Shakespeare though. Never mind fancy poetry; you can't beat a good tongue twister! "Sheena leads, Sheila needs"
