Title: Royal Marine from Marple killed in Afghanistan
Post by: admin on January 16, 2009, 05:27:46 PM
Corporal Danny Winter of 45 Commando Royal Marines, aged 28 and from Marple, was killed with a comrade in an explosion in Afghanistan on 14 January, 2009. Several people have suggested that I post something about the web site where tributes to Danny can be made if you feel this is appropriate. The link is:

http://www.lastingtribute.co.uk/tribute/Winter/2997614

In addition, there is a less formal entry on Facebook, where friends and family can join a group and leave messages and tributes. The link for this is:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=49598561745

There also a confirmed report from the MOD web site:

I've received information about the timing of the cortege from one of the local British Legion representatives. It is very much as described by Wolfman but includes the time of departure, so I though it was worth adding:

The cortege will depart Church Lane, Marple Nr Methodist Church, at 10-40 hrs on Friday 6th February 2009, proceed into Hibbert Lane, then Stockport Road, Marple Road, into Hillcrest Road to Nangreave Road then right onto A6 Buxton Road to St George's Church, for a service with Military Honours at 11-15 hrs.

Please circulate this information, local people wishing to pay their respects in the traditional manner can do so anywhere along the above route.

The Friends of Marple Memorial Park are fully supportive of Danny's name being added to the Marple War Memorial but hope that he will be the last that needs to be.

I saw them working on the memorial and asked the park keeper what they were doing .  He said they had removed the young chaps name who was recently killed in Afghanistan.  The park keeper was angry that he had not been informed and was contacting the council  I work in the Memorial Park but did not see the park keeper for the remainder of the day.  I have not seen Danny's name on the memorial but the park keeper had and said that they had brought all the equipment with them for grinding it out.  That's all I know so I hope I have got it wrong but there is a blank space there now and you can see that something has been removed.

My son says that he saw it had been added recently, as described in the notice posted below, so it is very disconcerning that you say it has been removed. The Friends of the Park were consulted about it being added but I've heard nothing about it being removed. I will try to find out but unfortunately as the weekend is upon us it may prove difficult to get answers until Monday.

I sent and email about this to local councillors last night and received a reply from Shan Alexander saying she didn't know about it but would find out urgently.

This morning I've had a call from the Parks & Recreation Manager responsible for War Memorials, who has advised me that the reason it has been removed is that Afghanistan was spelt wrongly! It will be done again with the correct spelling in the very near future, in fact he was surprised that they hadn't done it immediately after grinding off the mistake.

I was imagining all kinds of reasons why it might have been taken off but I didn't think of that. It's something of a relief to know that it's such a simple reason but you would expect them to have checked and double-checked before starting in the first place, wouldn't you.

This issue is covered in this weeks Stockport Express.  Danny's step-father is quoted as saying ''We knew all about it.  It was a genuine mistake.  There is no problem - we all make mistakes'.

But this dignified and rational response didn't stop the Express, ridiculously, putting 'WHAT AN INSULT' in bold underlined caps on the front page!   ::)

They've made a very good job of it too. During our task day in the park yesterday a group of Danny's family and friends visited the memorial to pay their respects and left a wreath. It's good that there is a place they can do that in suitable surroundings:

Unfortunately they will have also seen that the memorial has been defaced with graffiti by idiots that have no respect for anything. Now that is a REAL INSULT to all the men on the memorial who gave their lives.

The Park Keeper has attempted to remove this without success so I have sent photos of the offending material to the Parks & Recreation management with a request that it be removed as quickly as possible.
