Title: blue bags
Post by: tina on October 24, 2007, 02:53:06 PM
Well mine arrived this morning, a nice roll of 60 blue bags! The extra 8 are for the times we have extra waste eg Xmas, easter etc...
Not quite sure yet how it will go, I'm all for trying but have to confess I usually put 2 bags out per week. One thing I will be doing now (which I must confess not to doing) is to start taking my plastic milk and juice bottles down to the tip. That should take my waste down to 1 bag per week I'm sure
Here's to a greener cleaner Marple  :D

Why do you think it will be a cleaner greener marple more people will dump rubbish how do we take rubish to the tip if we dont own a car .what happens to the rubish that people cant be bothered puting on the pavement in the blue bags how many dustbin men have lost ther jobs because of the new collection . not as many will now be needed .

Blimey! Calm down! There is plenty of recycle points around Marple! I happen to live near the tip thats why I said I would be going to the tip, I also do not have a car, but there's nothing wrong with my legs to walk round.
It's not rocket science to put a bag at the garden gate. So why will it be dumped?

It would be good if Stockport would also collect the plastic and cardboard recycling instead of having to take it to the tip. With the current system glass, tins, paper and garden waste can all be collected. the only thing I have to go to the tip regularly for is to get rid of cardboard and plastic.

I honestly cannot see why anyone would have a problem with the new blue bag system.

At present, you only get one bag a week, I have asked for extra to be told they are not allowed to give them.

Often, on bin collection day, our bin bag has blown away from where it is usually left by the time i get home from work, this way, on a roll, I have all the bin bags I should normaly have from them a year.

As for having problems collecting waste, there is a phone number for the recycling department, if you give them a ring, im sure they could help

i asked and was told that should you run out of the blue bags you can use black bags as long as they are the same quality as the blue. after looking at the blue ones i think not a problem mine that i buy are better. :D

I dont think I have a problem with it either but I think Im just suspicious of the council !!

that maybe in the future when we are used to the new system they may well say if you put out black bags then you get charged

My family has 6 members.. I do recycle probably not as much as i could but i try but i still produce 2 or 3 bags a week.

The quality of the bags is dreadful  but they are quite large i think.. the transparency is a bit off putting..

claims that they will be checking our rubbish to see if businesses are throwing stuff away (instead of paying the correct amount to dispose of it)etc make me a little concerned especially when i run out of blue bags - in theory that will be in May!!

and the blue bag rolls dont fit in my drawer :>(

but apart from that i think we need something different than the old way not just to help the bin men but also to encourage more recycling.

and then we could discuss at length the fact that our greener stockport doesnt recycle half as much as most of the rest of the country even though our council tax is significantly higher than many

my twopenneth worth :p

So if i put black bag out on friday .the one they left on friday which was tied up in the bin will they take it .quality of the blue bags is poor allready mine is split .whelie bins would be ideal .we must be the only councill in the country that wont use them need better way of disposing of plastic and cardboard . I rest my case for now . ???

I had a 'meeting' via work with the lady who has been instrumental in tha changes. she said that there is no chance we will be getting wheelie bins for the next 5 years because they are changing the way they collect our rubbish (blue bags) they are clear so they can see how much we do or dont recycle, and flag up any repeat offenders, they also have no plans to collect plastic, although they trialed it in marple and it was very sucessful it was too expensive to carry on with. it is something to do with the average yoghurt pot containing 40 types of plastic and their recycling facility can only process 20.

this meeting lasted 90 mins and covered loads of stuff but that was the jist of it.

also if you get someone elses black box or green bin ring the number they give you and they will clean/return it.

also the salvation army collect plastic and take it to the tip for you, you can compost card and your hoover bag and contents!

i've lived in marple all my life and dont remember a trial for plastic collection.
also if they carn't do anything with it whats the point of taking it to the reclying bins in the main carpark or down at the tip. what happens to it when it leaves there does it just go to a landfill site.

I wrote to the council about this yesterday and got a reply saying that the council had decided at a meeting in the last two weeks to introduce doorstep plastic and carboard recycling, probably in 2009 along with wheelie bins.

Some of my family live on the Marple Hall estate, and they were involved in the trial for plastic.

Its a good idea, as we go through many plastic milk bottles a week.

I notice in the local paper that Tetra Pak recycling is being introduced although not - if I read it right - at the Rose Hill depot.  This is a shame.  Anyone know why this has happened.  Rose Hill is surely one of the prime recyling centres in Stockport.

I don't know why it isn't being introduced at Rose Hill but you can now recycle tetrapak cartons at the Portwood Tesco superstore.

These blue bags are proving very attractive to our local cats.  We never had problems with cats tearing open the black bags but we do with the blue bags.  Is it because they can see in the bags?

I see that the local paper has an article on the "See through" factor of the bin bags. It quotes that it is an invasion of privacy? Ie anyone can see what you have disposed of. Up to the 21/11/07 an online poll for the newspaper had 89% saying yes it was an intrusion & 11% no.

See-through bags to be rubbished
Victoria Morley
28/11/2007

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to roll out see-through bin bags could be heading straight back to Stockport Council’s waste bin, after furious residents rubbished the plan.

Stockport Council was bombarded with queries from residents deeply concerned about their rights to privacy after the Stockport Express exclusively revealed the plans last week.

And following a meeting of the Environment Scrutiny Committee last Thursday, Labour councillor Philip Harding says the Council are seriously considering pulling the plug on the interim scheme, which will be in place for a year before it is replaced by wheelie bins in 2008.

"It’s not often you see councillors visibly scared but they really are worried this time. They have already faced angry public reaction this week and that’s just in the roll out stages of the plan," said Coun Harding, (pictured above).

Scrutiny committee chair, Coun John Smith, could only confirm yesterday that a full report will be presented at the January meeting to assess whether the blue transparent sacks meet criteria - however he did say the scheme was already effective.

Residents in Marple and Romiley were the first to receive their year’s supply of 60 transparent bin bags this month, with Edgeley scheduled to be the next area to receive theirs next week.

Residents in Offerton, Heald Green and Bramhall will receive bags in the New Year.

Under the new scheme, which the Council claims has been introduced to tackle illegal business waste and to encourage more efficient recycling in Stockport, residents will still be allowed to use black bin bags alongside the blue ones.

But extra blue bags are not available to buy.

Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, executive member for the environment, said: "As with any good project management, the scheme has several points throughout it when practices can be reviewed, but the Council has no plans for a U-turn.

"The blue sack scheme has been introduced as an interim measure until wheelie bins arrive. It’s a change we’ve had to make for a number of reasons. We wanted to resolve the problem of householders not receiving their weekly sack, we had to address concerns the Health and Safety Executive had about bin site collection and we needed to tackle the costly problem of some businesses illegally disposing of their waste in the household collection. We also hope that providing the bag with tabs will allow the public to tie the top and thereby reduce any chance of spillage."

Coun Bodsworth also confirmed that the cost of the blue bags is £30,000 a year for a whole bin round, for example the Marple and High Lane bin round area.

However, furious residents left messages on our website, claiming they had ‘seen straight through’ the Council’s ‘highly invasive’ ‘money-making’ ‘snooping’ exercise with one reader accusing the project of being ‘one step away from a 1984 police-style state’.

Stockport resident Alan Royston also criticised the scheme on the website for being a ‘waste of time’ following the news residents can still use black bags. He said: "Surely this defeats the object of the Council’s exercise with regard to seeing what's inside the bag.

"Quite frankly I feel the whole exercise is farcical."

Two black bin bags amongst the clear ones have been left near my house.

Does this mean that the waste collectors will ignore these and/or are they instructed to do so?

I dont likethe bags BUT

I do agree with them giving us a load up front... they are much digger than the black ones as far as i can tell... or does the colour just make them look bigger ???

they never said they would refuse to take black ones... however i reckon that in 12 months time they may say exactly that....  once we have got used to them!!

as a result our recycling has improved... we always recycle the stuff they collect but havent been that good at plastic though it has weighed a bit on our consciences

so loads of plastic is being recycled now... though we are only 1 bag less a week on rubbish  :(

not sure if its because they are transparent or because we feel "guilty" about putting black ones out!!

something aobut it is working in our house so anything that helps us think aobut recycling more has got to be a good thing and they should do much more of it.

I don't like them but apart from them being too flimsy I can't really find anything really serious to object about... there are worst things going on in the world and this council does much worst things.... wonder when all the people who complain about all these things will start to think about voting for someone else...
or are all marple forum people anti liberal  :D

wonder what the cost difference is between delivering 60 bags once a year to delivering a bag every week...  bulk ordering is usually cheaper so maybe there is a cost saving ??

The Council could do with having a separate plastic collection.

We recycle plastic, but the collection at the Rose Hill "tip" only allows you to put in bottles (no yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, plastic bags etc.) - I bet all the various bits of plastic comprise the vast majority of most dustbins (er, blue bags).

I'm all in favour of the blue bags, they are much better - who actually throws things which are private and confidential into the rubbish? the contents of most bags end up strewn accross the street so the neighbours can see what you throw out, whether or not you buy pedigree chum or tesco value dog food!

since they 'rolled out' (pun intended) the blue bags we have been putting out one a week maximum, sometimes we have been waiting for two weeks. i do agree that plastic collection would be helpful but you can take it to the tip or call the salvation army who will deal with it for you. I also know its a pest not being able to recycle various plastics but is there any way you can reuse? or cut down the amount you buy?

I emailed the council about collect plastic tubs (eg yoghurt pots) once but they said that there was no recycling facilities as there was no demand for the grade of recycled plastic you could make from then.  I just try to buy as little as possible, for example putting mushrooms in paper bags rather than buying the plastic trays at the supermarket.

Tetra-Pak containers can now be recycled in a container in the Co-op car park. (There's been one in Romiley for a while).

One less thing to put in the blue bag.

Brilliant - I hate throwing them away - do you know if you have to take the plastic spout off them or do they go in just as they are?

Also re blue bags I am sick of the cats in our neighbourhood tearing at the bags while they are waiting to be collected.  Never had this problem before.

I think you can leave the tops on as it doesn't say on the side that they have to be removed and they are photographed with the tops on.  The magazine from the council yesterday implied that once wheelie bins are introduced in 2009/10 they will be collecting tetrapak cartons as well as plastic and card.

Denise.. are you sure its not magpies?  They wait for the bags to be put out on our street then all descend en masse.... chasing all cats away!!
Title: blue bags
Post by: Deniseam on January 16, 2008, 10:40:18 AM
No definitely not magpies - we have a cat in our neighbourhood who not only terrorises our cat but sits boldly on the top of the blue bag and rips away at it.  We are usually so careful as well with wrapping up food scraps etc.

Whenever I have any food scraps to put in the bags I spray them with disenfectant before putting in the bag this keeps the cats away.

Actually I am doing Ok with them - occasionally have to put out a second bag but the tranparency does make me think more about what I am putting into the bag. It has led to way more trips to the tip though to get rid of recycling. Never had any problems with ripped bags either, and there are urban foxes round here, but I do spray my bin with disinfectant each week so maybe the small puts them off?

My big gripe with the Green bins was the size of them and their unsuitability for small terraced houses if waste is to be collected from the front of the property. I have been in Cheadle Hulme recently and they have new blue wheelies which I think are for plastic and cardboard that are really dinky. I wouldn't object to something that size - anyone know when we are likely to get them?

Well you are lucky that the foxes don't rip the blue bags - the badger here loves them, and the magpies have a good go too!  Plus the odd marauding cat, of course.

2 years ago, when I last stayed in Marple, I was amazed at how you all cope with the little bins and bags. I left in 1982 and have been back staying in Marple several times and not much has changed. You all need Wheelie bins. We have had them in Australia for a long time now. You have one for household rubbish, garden rubbish and paper, cardboard and plastic rubbish. We have a charge for this in the council rates but it is quite minimal. We also have large household goods(ie old washing machines, households good, etc) collected twice a year. We are encouraged to recycle as much as possible. People can take any extra rubbish to the council tip for a fee, but most find we don't need to now. I noticed someone mentioned them in 2009/2010,seems a long way away
