Title: Regent Cinema
Post by: on August 05, 2005, 11:53:09 PM
Just wanted to say what a great cinema we have in Marple.
I don't go to the regent cinema very often as it only opens in the evening. But I took my family to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory the other night, the place was packed and we really enjoyed watching a film without being disturbed, (usually when we have been to stockport it is not supervised so some people make a noise during the films).

It still looks the same as I remember it from being a child.
So I will be making more of an effort in the future and stick to the regent.  :)

I went last night, and was thinking the same thing, its a lovely cinema, and we look forward to the ice cream interval.

Well Tina all I can say is that it wasnt that long ago that I was a child, so you must be well into your senior years :p   :p

Ha Ha  no Rachael i'm not that old!
I always enjoyed going as a child and it still looks the same.
There has always been a ice cream break, which is great. Most modern cinemas don't have that, and also the prices are right for sweets, drinks and popcorn. So it's good value for money.  :)

Aww I miss the Regent so much.  It's a fabulous cinema.  I have fond memories of almost being thrown out for being noisy...I was laughing too much as the film we went to see (Castaway) had so many Monty Python-esque moments in it that it all got too much.  I love the place all the same.

The Regent is the only cinema I know of that became a bingo hall and became a cinema again. Has to be a first I think!

It's never been a bingo hall!

Use as Bingo Hall was applied for back in 1969, but was refused, see below and here

Later that same year a new owner applied for planning permission for a change of use to a Bingo Hall. Bingo was now becoming massively popular and hundreds of former cinemas were being snapped up and converted. Marple UDC decided on 10th February 1969 that to grant approval as a Bingo Hall would be "injurious to the amenities of the area" and as a result permission was refused. The council then decided that they would try and acquire the premises themselves and applied for a Compulsory Purchase order. Their plan was to convert the Regent into a Civic Centre that could be used for activities ranging from meetings and exhibitions to athletics events. However, when on 12th June Mr. James Lillis made an application for renewal of a cinema license, the council withdrew their application for compulsory purchase and the Regent was saved as a cinema.
