Title: Dim and distant
Post by: Oldmerpudlian on April 16, 2005, 12:11:53 PM
You may already have covered this query but I'm new to the site. I recently visited Marple after long absence. Quite shocked to see that the old "Jolly" is now a block of flats. Does anyone know what happened to the old mounting block which stood outside the pub. Probably it went into the builders' junk. When we were girls we used to use the block to get back on our ponies after calling at Mr Gervaux' (Spelling?) with mother's grocery list.

If your talking about the steps then they are across the road from the old jolly. They were saved and have a new home. My kids love walking up them every time we walk past them.

In its last years the 'Jolly' was not very jolly at all, but that's no reason for the destruction of a historic landmark building.  I hope we all carry on calling that part of Marple 'the Jolly Sailor?'  I refuse to call it 'The Macarthy Stone'.............  ;)
