Title: Marple is rated as one of best places to escape to the countryside v
Post by: ludworth on March 24, 2013, 03:48:20 PM
Marple has been rated 9th best place  to live where you can escape to the country in today's (24.03.13) Sunday Times.
Article reads:"First the canals, then the railways, brought hundreds of Victorian visitors to Marple on bank holidays and Sundays, all "seeking fresh air and the beauty of Marple's Roman Lakes". Today, at first glance, this town near Stockport is viewed as a comfortable south Manchester commuter haven, albeit one on the edge of the Peak District National Park and the Goyt Valley. It is a walkers' delight, but there's plenty on offer for cyclists, too. Nearby, the Etherow Country Park covers 240 acres - perfect for bird-watching and nature study - and is home to the Etherow Country Park Sailing Club
WOULD SUIT: Professional types who hanker for fresh air ( and have strong legs for steep hills)."

But not good if you want a decent supermarket ...

Pity they are giving away our little secret - the last thing we need is an invasion of Sunday Times readers.  On the other hand, it could be good news for property values......   ;D

Yes, Dave - but that is not going to help our young people who would like to stay in Marple and can't afford to.

Judging by the Co-op and the rate that the Sunday Times seems to sell out at, the invasion has already happened Dave.

Then they'll have to do what many before them have had to do Barbara, move out and live in a place that they can afford to live in until they can afford to live in Marple, then they can come back if they wish. Young people don't have a right to live here, or anywhere for that matter just because their parents live/d here.

Perhaps some affordable housing will appear somewhere along Hibbert Lane?

They are building some now on the old Peacefield School site.

Was there a "Best for Traffic Jams"?  Marple would probably do well there too. >:(

Now the Daily Mail is reporting that Stockport has the second highest score for resident contentment and illustrates it with a picture of the Memorial Park.

It is interesting to note that the image picked out to represent Stockport in this article is a photograph of Marple Memorial Park's flowerbeds. These are the very beds that the council planned to grass over two years ago and the Friends of the Park had to stop them - literally as they were starting to do it - and we had to adopt and plant them up ourselves.

What lengths will the Friends have to go to in order to stop the cuts proposed for 2014/15?

Proposals that include:

·NO LONGER EMPLOYING PEOPLE WITH HORTICULTURAL KNOWLEDGE to look after flowerbeds, trees, shrubs and parkland.
·REMOVING instead of repairing or replacing broken play equipment.
·REMOVING instead of repairing or replacing broken fencing, seating, signage, and other street furniture.
·Picking up litter in parks NO MORE THAN once per week.
·Fewer staff based at specific parks (will impact Marple Memorial Park)
·REMOVING SUPPORT to Friends of Park Groups, like us, leaving the community to try and pick up the pieces and fight off the decay.

How much longer will photos of Memorial Park be chosen to represent the borough?

Please make sure you have your say here:

This is a massive contradiction ::)

I agree with them both, Marple and Stockport are good places to be in 2013.

It's just that the compliment seems a little back-handed when proffered by both The Sunday Times AND The Daily Mail.

Glad for Marple getting some recognition

Then they'll have to do what many before them have had to do Barbara, move out and live in a place that they can afford to live in until they can afford to live in Marple, then they can come back if they wish. Young people don't have a right to live here, or anywhere for that matter just because their parents live/d here.

Who exactly is this disregard for the young helping?
Why not build some affordable housing in Marple?(and no £250,000 is not affordable)

It is what you have written that is a contradiction. Read it, if you don't get it, ask somebody to explain. I have no comment to make about affordable housing.
