i went out to the romper last night ( 30 07 05 )
for me and my wifes 17th wedding anniversary with 4 other close friends.
there was a varied menu and the food was excellent ( i mean really excellent ) we will be going there again for sure.was a bit pricey but you got what you paid for  and i dont think i can eat for a couple of days now.(( i had a mixed grill )and sticky toffee pud )
he he ,well it was a special occassion.The meal area was nice an cosy,service was impecable and the food piping hot, overall the night out was excellent ( that was also down to our company).we then finished off the night in what we like to call our local pub the ring a bells where we laughed the rest of the night away.

Real Ale Update - my partner visited The Romper this evening and they have Bombardier and Spitfire on handpumps  

So the real ale fans can still enjoy a visit. Haven't tried the food yet.

Despite the 0871 phone number, I dropped by yesterday evening - walking the dog, you know  - and the Romper seemed to be holding a re-opening bash, complete with marquee and Abba tribute band 

It's been given a huge makeover, and the interior is now incongruously cool and contemporary.  It was a nice pint - Spitfire and Bombardier, as promised by Cyberman - but not cheap at £2.60.

I went to the romper last night and it was fabulous.  A warm and friendly welcome from the staff as we opened the door instantly generated a relaxed feeling amongst our party.  An expertly pulled pint and a choice from the concise yet thoughtful menu later and we tucked into some of the finest pub food I think I have ever tasted.  My companions all agreed heartily, between savoured mouthfulls! 

A cheery 'goodbye' from the smiling staff as we headed to the door confirmed my belief that, although it may be in a remote location, this pub is well worth the effort.  The place almost urges you not to rush things, food, drinks, conversations...and perhaps most importantly there isn't the pervasive feeling that one is 'invading the locals clique', a problem encountered in many of the more parochial pubs of Marple.

We shall certainly be making a trip there again in the near future.

Myself, my Finacee and 2 children went for a meal to the Romper (Saturday 26/07/08) and I think we must have gone to the wrong pub looking at the quote above. Staff miserable, checking us every few minutes to see if we had finished the meal (felt like being rushed), one bar staff on, long queue, waiting ages for the dessert. The main meals and starters were advertised as spicey, I've had more spice in an ice cream (even my 10 year daughter was complaining that the food was not spicey). All in all not worth the visit at all, would not recommned it to anybody. Very few people eating although the outside was heaving with drinkers enjoying the sunshine, maybe they have eaten here before and just thought the beer is ok but not the food.
Have eaten at the Ring o' Bells and it beats the Romper all ways, we had spicey food at the Ringers and it was tasty, the Romper was not.

Yes, it's a nice spot for a pint on a sunny evening.  The beer is indeed good, though a tad pricy at £2.60 a pint.

Don't know about the food, but I wonder if Orangewhip writes for the Stockport Express

I'm afraid I don't write for the Stockport Express, whatever gave you that idea?    Perhaps I should send them some of my reviews...

Back up in Marple over the weekend so I'm going to give the Ring o' Bells another chance.  Expect a full report next week folks.  I'm intrigued by this 'spicey' food the rover mentions in his post!
