It was great news to receive an email from Kevin this morning saying:

Hi Julie (The Marple Review) & Mark (The Marple Website),

We have the final figure in and we managed to break the 15K barrier!

We achieved £15,237.43 and we wouldn’t have reached that figure without your help.

"It really emphasises the power of the local media, because it was your initial involvement that produced all the volunteers for our campaign and your on going promotion of the street poppies etc. that really caught the imagination of the local public and businesses and without that we would be nowhere near the figure we achieved.

Our sincere thanks go to you all, you were brilliant.

We’re really grateful for your support."

The team have also sent a thank you to all the volunteers who helped out with collections, saying:

"The generosity of the local people has been overwhelming but we wouldn't have achieved that figure without all the hard work and dedication of you all.

Give yourselves a big pat on the back for a job well done."

Many thanks to all,

Kevin, Mike and Ron

Well done to these three gentlemen, Kevin, Ron and Mike, who have turned the Marple Poppy Appeal around in 2017.

The stall in Asda manned by volunteers will be there all week until Saturday 11th November.

On Saturday they also put up a gazebo manned by local cadets that was decorated with artwork provided by pupils from Brabyns Prep and All Saints' Schools.

They will return on Saturday 11th too.

Today Marple Poppy Appeal organisers have been putting up Street Poppies to remember the 46 Marple men killed in 1917.

Can you help raise funds for the RBL Poppy Appeal by becoming a Street Poppy sponsor?

Posted on behalf of the Marple Poppy Appeal Organisers:
Poppy Appeal – 2017
100 years – Still Remembered
The Marple Men who fell in WW1 in 1917
In 1917, 46 Marple Men lost their lives on the battlefields of World War One.

Marple was obviously not the size it is today, so the loss of 46 young men would have been a massive loss to the community. Some of those men were brothers, so the loss to those families would have been even more devastating.

So with respect to their memory, we are erecting 46 large poppies on lamp posts around the area and each will carry the name of one of these men and the month in which they fell.

We are hoping local organisations and/or businesses will sponsor these poppies by offering a modest donation to the Poppy Appeal.

Marple Website and The Marple Review have offered to feature the sponsors on their websites and through their relevant social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc).

If you would like to find out more about this initiative please contact the Poppy Appeal Organisers.

To contact us please Email: poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or Tel: 07954 388782

Thanking you in anticipation,

Poppy Appeal Organisers

To pick out the key points of the article in the previous post, the Poppy Team are primarily looking for help with the following:

Collections in Asda between 9am to 6pm every day from Saturday to Saturday November 4 to 11.

If you can offer an hour or more of your time for one or more days as above, please get in touch via poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or by telephone: 07954 388782

Business or personal sponsors of a "Street Poppy"

A Street Poppy is a large poppy that can be fixed to a lamppost or similar. The plan is to seek sponsors for 46 Street Poppies bearing the names of the 46 men listed on Marple War Memorial who lost their lives 100 years ago, in 1917. these will be sited on lampposts all around Marple and District.

If you would like to sponsor a Street Poppy, please get in touch via poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or by telephone: 07954 388782

Business sponsors (and personal sponsors if they wish) will be promoted in this thread and on Twitter by The Marple Website.

If you'd like to help in a different way please get in touch too!

The new Marple Poppy Team are building up to the start of this year's campaign and have provided the following press release:

Plans are currently being finalised for the Poppy Appeal in Marple this November.

This year, the organisers are hoping for record poppy sales to raise funds for the annual Royal British Legion appeal and are hoping to involve many local businesses and schools.
Former Marple business owner Kevin Murray has taken on the role of Poppy Appeal organiser this year – with the help of ex-fireman Mike Openshaw and octogenarian Ron Townley, who has been organising the appeal on his own for well over 15 years.

Kevin said: “Unfortunately last year Ron was suffering from ill health and so we didn't really have much of a Poppy Appeal in Marple due to circumstances. A lot of people were disappointed but this year we are making sure there is a real Poppy presence in the town for 2017. Ron is delighted that this year he has some help and hopefully we will have a really good year.''

Letters have already been sent out to local businesses asking for their help to ensure plenty of poppies are on sale in the Marple, Marple Bridge, Mellor and Compstall areas. Shops and businesses are being asked to take a box of poppies and also a collection tin to place on their counters/reception areas.

Local businesses are also being encouraged to take part in a poppy shop window display to promote interest among the public as they shop.

The nationwide Poppy Appeal only runs for a short time from October to Remembrance Sunday which this year falls on November 12.

Appeal organisers are also looking for volunteers who can spare just one hour to man a Poppy stall in Marple's Asda supermarket. This will be open from 9am to 6pm every day from Saturday to Saturday November 4 to 11. Anyone who can help with this will be most welcome.

Kevin said: “We are also looking for some local businesses to ‘sponsor a street poppy’ which are large poppies fitted onto lamp posts to help demonstrate the support of the Marple area. If you have a business and would like to find out more about his initiative please contact the Poppy Appeal organisers.

“2017 marks the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele, where over half a million soldiers lost their lives in the First World War. A hundred years later, it remains one of the most horrific battles in the history of mankind.

“The Poppy Appeal is about remembering the brave men and women, who throughout the years in conflicts all over the world, have sacrificed their lives so that we have the freedom we enjoy today.''

Kevin said poppy wreaths are sometimes difficult to source so if you would like one, please contact the appeal organisers and they will try to help. Kevin became interested in the Poppy Appeal because of his late father Peter Murray who served in the Durham Light Infantry.

“We are hoping for really good support in Marple and surrounding areas this time and hopefully to engage more of the younger generation to understand what happened over the years in the various conflicts. We have plans for a gazebo in Market Street, Marple which we hope will host a remembrance art exhibition on the two Saturdays before Remembrance Sunday, November 4 and 11,'' he said.

All money raised with the Marple appeal will go direct to the Royal British Legion for their work with ex-servicemen and women.

If you can help in any way, please get in touch by email at: poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or by telephone: 07954 388782

Good for you Henri! I've found people to be very generous when I've been on the Poppy Stall in the Co-Op and ASDA in recent years.

Anyway, great that we are talking about this and that there's a new team on the job for 2017.

A special email address that you can use to contact the organisers has now been set up.

Just use poppyappeal@marple-uk.com to send an email to all three of the organisers mentioned below.

Why are there no actual street collections in Marple? The customers used to be a lot more generous to poor frozen collectors out-of-doors than they were when I last collected which was in the old Co-op. Even a hard stare at the people who were trying to avoid us didn't work, despite placing myself where they practically had to climb over me to get out of the store.

I used to be very good at street Poppy collections when I lived in Marple in the early 1980s. My coup was £10 note from a Japanese gentleman (yes he did ask what it was all about and I did explain.) The prime morning spot back then was outside the post office on Stockport road. Stand in front of the door, not near enough to block the entrance but close enough for people to have to walk round you. I always did well there!!

Despite my advanced age I'd still be prepared to stand in the street if required. I once chased a thief down Market Street after he snatched the collecting tin out of the shop I was in. He abandoned the tin after a 100 yards or so (he threw it at me!) - I think he was embarrassed by this harpy in a pinny running after him yelling "STOP THIEF" at the top of her voice!

POPPY APPEAL in Marple back on track for 2017!

Posted on behalf of the new RBL Poppy Team for Marple:

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION: 2017 POPPY APPEAL

Marple, Marple Bridge, Mellor and Compstall

You may be aware that last year's appeal was not very successful for various reasons, some of which are detailed in other threads.

For this year's appeal a new team has taken over the running of the event and the purpose of this article is to make everyone aware that we need your assistance and help to make it a success this year.

We intend to make this event an all Marple effort in that we will deliver the poppies and boxes to all venues as previously on our lists.

If you are not sure you are on our lists and would like to have a poppy collection box in your place of work then please let us know.

In addition to the Poppy collection boxes, various types of wreaths are available, although these need to be ordered in good time prior to Remembrance Sunday.

We will collect the collection boxes after Remembrance Sunday, count the monies locally and deposit the funds in a local bank.

You will be notified afterwards of the total collected at your venue and the overall amount for the area.

Wreaths will be issued as previous years, but could past recipients please confirm requirements to Ron Townley. Anyone new requiring a wreath please also contact Ron.

For local Poppy collections in Marple, Marple Bridge, Mellor and Compstall locations please call Mike Openshaw.

For overall enquiries including volunteers to collect in the ASDA store, please call Kevin Murray.

The last properly organised Poppy Appeal in 2015 resulted in a fantastic collection of over £10,000 in Marple. Please help us make this year even bigger.

Should you require any further information or wish to volunteer your help, please contact any of the organisers below:

Ron Townley: 0161 943 8863 (Wreaths)
Kevin Murray: 07954 388782 (General enquiries and ASDA collections)
Mike Openshaw: 07739 260372 (Collection boxes in shops, businesses, schools and other locations).
