The Transport Trust has awarded two National Red Wheel commemorative plaques, which where unveiled yesterday along the Peak Forest Canal at Marple. Both were unveiled by President of the Transport Trust, the Right Hon. Sir William McAlpine and Canal & River Trust’s Chief Executive, Richard Parry.

The first Red Wheel was unveiled near Posset Bridge, and is dedicated to the mile long deep flight of sixteen locks that opened in 1805, and the horse-drawn canal tramway that connected the upper and lower canals before the locks were completed. Invited guests were then provided with a buffet lunch and refreshments at Hyde Bank Farm in Romiley, after which the afternoon continued with a short walk from Hyde Bank Farm to the Peak Forest Canal, where guests boarded `The Bell`. The boat took the party over Marple Aqueduct and its panoramic views, where the second Red Wheel Plaque was unveiled in testament to Britain’s tallest masonry arched Marple Aqueduct, which opened in 1800.

Arthur went along to record things for posterity and images have now been uploaded to the Virtual History Tour:
