To test whether you can link directly to any item create a basic html file on your hard disk using notepad and call it (e.g.) test.htm

Try cutting and pasting the following. REMEMBER TO FILL IN THE BLANKS (here, ...) WITH THE ACTUAL SOURCE URL FOR YOUR IMAGE. (I've had to switch the teletype option around the angled brackets, Mark, or your previewer changes them!)

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html>
<head>
<title>Dave's Page</title>
</head>

<body>
<img src="http://..."></img>
</body>
</html>

Double-click on it and your default browser will probably load it. If the link works for your simple on-disk file then it will almost certainly work on Mark's forum as well.

Of course you could go the whole hog and learn html (and other web technologies) at
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

Another very good reason to block linking of images is to prevent other sites using your bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data sent to and from your hosting account. The more bandwidth you use the more you pay for your hosting. So if someone else creates an article on their site using the images on yours, you pay for the bandwidth to serve the images up to their visitors, not the site that is "pirating". This is the main reason why many site block this. The other issue is copyright of course.

But it was trial and error - can you tell whether a site allows its images to be linked or not?

Unfortunately, Dave, the only way to know is to paste the link and see. Some sites allow you to link directly to their pictures and others block deep linking because they want to drive the traffic to their site to monetise (awful word) their content. You could copy the picture, paste it into something like Dropbox, imgur or PhotoBucket and then link to your copy.

I've replaced the [ brackets with { so we can see the code. It looks like you are pasting a search result rather than an actual image @Dave

In order to paste the image itself from another site you need to go to where there image is actually hosted and then copy the image location. It looks like to Google Gallery is actually linking through to the source, not the source itself.

What you are doing is right in principle but it must be a direct link and the hosting site must also allow (or more accurately not disallow) images to be linked.

This for example {img}http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Media/Pix/pictures/2009/9/7/1252318832903/Julia-McKenzie-as-Miss-Ma-001.jpg{/img}

When we use square brackets gives this:
