I notice that the rocking horse in the playground has been taken away - has it gone for repair?

Yes, it needs new bearings. I've been told it will be 1 to 2 weeks before it is reinstalled.

Been chasing the council up on this again! Latest promise is that installation will start next  week.

Frustrating or what! Hoping that it will be installed before half term but watch this space.......

Unfortunately there has been a delay on the supply of the new roundabout and it is now expected that the installation will start week commencing 5th October.

The Safe Surface improvements in the Junior Play Area will be finished this week (may already be finished) and the new roundabout is due to be installed next week, so the Infants Play Area will be closed for 2 to 3 days.

Users may notice that one of the baby swing seats has been removed. This is due to cracks appearing and a replacement has been ordered.

Roundabout in Infants Play Area

We're pleased to report that following the public's great response to our ePetition urging the council to replace the roundabout in the Infants Play Area, a new roundabout has been ordered and is expected to be installed in September 2015. At the same time a new synthetic carpet island will be laid around the roundabout, the multi-use climbing unit and the inclusive springer.

Improvements will also be made to the safe surface in the Junior Play Area.

Funding is now available:

Thank you to everyone who signed our on-line petition asking the council to find funds to replace the roundabout. The ePetition closed with 211 signatures, which makes it the second highest ever electronic only petition on the council web site and the 4th highest listed on the site altogether (including paper petitions).

The petition was presented to Local Councillors at the 10 June Area Committee.

Councillors were very supportive and asked for a report on available funds.

A report was submitted to the next Area Committee Meeting on 15 July requesting approval of approximately £10,156 of new commuted sums to Marple Memorial Park. The report also showed that £8,132 has been previously allocated to the park, making a total of £18,288 available for improvements to play if the report was approved.

Unfortunately councillors had questions about the report that could not be answered because an Officer was not present. Councillors asked for the Officer to attend the next meeting on 12 August in order to answer their questions.

An Officer attended the 12 August meeting and local councillors were satisfied and approved the report.

Infants Play Area Improvements:

As well as the new roundabout, both the Infants and Junior Play Areas need replacement and / or repairs to safe surfaces.

The funds now available will be used to purchase a new roundabout and to install a synthetic carpet over the existing safe surfaces around the roundabout, the multi-use climbing frame and the inclusive springer. This will create a continuous level safe surface around all 3 pieces of equipment.

The roundabout has been ordered and the work is expected to be done in September after the school holidays.

It is not planned to do the safe surface around the swings, the Wendy house or the set of 3 “springers” at this time. This is because their life expectancy is relative short and we would like to replace them with new equipment when further funds can be made available in the future.

Junior Play Area Improvements:

In the Junior Play Area it has been agreed to replace the coloured sections of wet pour safe surface that have become detached from the surrounding tarmac around each piece of equipment, which should prolong the life of the Junior Play facility safe surfaces for a good number of years.

This work will also be done in September 2015 but we have asked that it is staggered with the Infants Play Area so that they are not both closed at the same time.

I've now received confirmation that a new roundabout has been ordered for the Infants' Play Area by the council. It's a Massey and Harris and it will look like this:

More details here: http://www.masseyandharris.com/roundabouts/15m-3-seat-inclusive-roundabout

It has an 8 week lead time.

Latest news on replacement of the Roundabout

Thank again to everyone who signed our on-line petition asking the council to find funds to replace the roundabout.

As well as the new roundabout, both the Infants and Junior Play Areas need replacement and / or repairs to the safe surfaces. It is planned to use the available funds to purchase a new roundabout and to replace / repair as much of the safe surfaces as possible (there will not be enough to do it all even with £18,000+).

We understand that the £8,132 already allocated is enough to cover the roundabout and expect that this will be ordered soon but the installation work will all be done at the same time as the safe surfaces to avoid a double-closure of the Infants Play Area.

So we need Marple Area Committee to approve the allocation of funds at the 12 August meeting in order to progress the matter.

The broken roundabout in the Infants Play Area is having a temporary Bitmac surface installed around it today to make it safe.

This is necessary due to the rapid decay of the safe surface, which is now a tripping hazard.

We remain hopeful that a permanent solution will be reached within the next few weeks but in the meantime please sign the ePetition to help us if you haven't already done so.

Our ePetition on the Council web site has gotten off to a good start and we've had over 100 signatures in two days.

It would be great to get many more between now and the Area Committee Meeting in June, so if you haven't signed it yet please do take the time.

If you have signed it (thank you) please try to get at least one friend or family member to sign too, and promote at school or anywhere else you can.

Here's the link again: http://democracy.stockport.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=65

We've also tweeted and written to new MP William Wragg asking for his support. He committed over the course of his campaign to deliver a 6 point plan for the area that included "Improving local parks". So we're hopeful that he will give his support to this campaign.

We've tried to obtain contact emails for the two new local councillors so they can be sent the same information as other councillors have received about this prior to the elections but at present these don't seem to be available (the vcf files on the council site do not contain email addresses at the moment). So if you know how to contact Annette Finnie and Kenny Blair by email please send me a PM.

Roundabout in Memorial Park Infants Play Area
« Reply #1 on: May 12, 2015, 09:36:28 AM »
The roundabout in the Infants Play Area has been broken and out of service for at least 6 weeks. It has never worked properly and soon after it was installed in 2008 the Friends of Memorial Park told the council it was not fit for purpose. Many promises to rectify the situation followed over the next 2.5 years but none were fulfilled and now the roundabout is unusable and the safe surface around it is getting worse every day.

The Friends of the Park have sought assurances from the council’s Greenspace Team that the roundabout will be replaced with a new piece of equipment but these have not been received. We have only been told that "Greenspace and SSK are currently reviewing priorities and spend for this financial year, this is one of the items that will be considered".

We wrote to local councillors asking for their support and they have agreed to consider how new equipment can be funded at the next Marple Area Committee on 10 June 2015.

In order to show councillors how important this is to the people in the local community who use the park we have set up an ePetition on the council’s own web site.

http://democracy.stockport.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=65

Please register on the council site and “sign” the ePetition to show councillors how important it is to you that the roundabout is replaced with a suitable piece of equipment and that the Infants Play Area in this hugely popular park must be properly maintained.

Please also SHARE this message with as many friends and family as possible and encourage others to sign the ePetition.

You can also contact local councillors by email or at their surgeries on Saturday mornings in Marple Library and urge them to take action.
