Hi,
a new book has great coverage of Marple and surrounding area.
Cotton Mills and Printworks on the River Goyt and its Tributaries.

For the first time a local historian takes a full overview of the cotton mills and printworks that grew up along the banks and valleys of the river Goyt and its tributaries, the Sett and Etherow. The book covers cotton mills and printworks in Fernilee, Whaley Bridge, Hayfield, New Mills, Rowarth, Marple, Compstall, Mellor and Stockport.

This important new work contains the history of over sixty establishments, telling the story of how each was founded and grew. The book looks in detail at notable moments in their histories, such as the fires and accidents that were so common.

Along the way, the author looks at the lives of some of the remarkable local men who played a part in the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. But this is not just a book about the mill owners, as it also reveals a great deal about the men and women who spent their working lives toiling within the mills and uncovers many forgotten stories and tragedies, at least one of which has long been suppressed.

The book contains 210pp with extensive appendixes and illustrations. Available for £14.99 from New Mills Heritage Centre or online post free from Amazon.co.uk
