Duke, if you listened to the programme it was clear that Tesco was doing a lot more than that. Telling a small supplier with just one product that they will not take any more of it unless he completely writes off a bill of £42,000, or demanding a payment of £2millon from a major supplier or they would not stock that supplier's products isn't quite the same thing as charging a sweetener to position products at beneficial points in the store.

I think "The Report" is still on I Player (it was last night).
Interesting postings .

it's nothing new, all the supermarkets / big stores charge the suppliers for end of aisle promotions, in-store radio promotion, advertising, Christmas etc etc

With all the adverse publicity Tesco has been getting in the last few weeks it's not surprising that people aren't shopping there. There was a programme on Radio 4's "The Report" recently on Tesco's dealings with their suppliers, including demanding massive payments (ie bribes) from big companies to stock their products ( £2million in one case!) and threatening to withdraw smaller suppliers' products from their shelves if the suppliers don't write off what Tesco owes them.  It was implied that when a product disappears from the shelves it often isn't because there is no demand for it but because the supplier won't play ball with Tesco's financial demands.

Not good publicity on top of the Serious Fraud Office's investigation.

It is more like payments to be on the ends of the shelf etc.

If you don't pay your product will only be seen by people that are looking for it.

One reason the Tesco store is now so empty, is that they have made the delivery service so cheap.   Salisbury are hitting the same problems of people not going to big stores as often.

As to prices, it depends on what you buy and how well you understand all the offers.   E.g. some items are best when brought on 2 for 1 and then stored, knowing they will be on offer again within 6 months.  (Or use CostCo to avoid paying the games.)
