There is an environmental cost to producing new cars, but cars have to be replaced at some point so it makes sense to incentivise people by these schemes to purchase low-emissions vehicles.
If there was a cheaper (subsidised?) bus service or (dream on) a train service into Stockport from Marple, that would help reduce congestion and pollution.

The sensible solution is a cable car service to Stockport or tram that links to the buxton line with park & ride.

However, Stockports problem is not shoppers, it's clearly the m60 and A6. There is a lack of parking for the Resugent Old Town (festive fringe on tomorrow - really quite good), despite the limited spaces the thick council have put aside a load of electric parking spots and penalise anyone parking there - rank stupidity.

No, no it won't. At least, not in large enough numbers to actually make a difference. This is the fallacy with most of these types of initiatives, including the Vehicle Duty that this scheme is based off.

If they wanted to encourage the use of lower emission cars, or public transport, then the answer is simple, put parking rates up to £20 per hour, and increase parking fines to £500. It would work, but it'll never happen. Instead, they introduce schemes like this so that they can say they are doing something, without actually having to make the hard decision about doing something that might make a difference.

Yep, that's exactly what we want, put up parking so that the town centre is a bigger ghost town than it already is. How about putting parking charges down to zero and encourage people to shop locally in the independent shops rather than tootle off to the Trafford centre to buy identikit tat.

How about we do nothing and car buyers would do the logical thing and buy low emission cars as they become economically viable.

Encouraging people to ditch their standard car is environmentally damaging as the production process causes the equivalent of 7 years emissions so those who believe they are doing their bit in buying an LEL are just adding to the problem. The most environmentally aware should hold their cars for as long as possible but ensure it's serviced regularly to ensure efficient performance

Why is it nonsense, rather than just attack those behind the scheme explain your views. To me it seems a good idea as part of a wider package.

I refer you to the above. Why not sack the parking team, allow free parking and see the increased footfall in Stockport generate business income?

Win win win  long run lowering for council tax

What utter nonsense, why not sack the fool who came up with this and use the money to build car parking for the old town?

Interesting post - thanks. Stockport is poor for air quality - see map here http://www.gmtu.gov.uk/gam_maps/. Anything which encourages people to choose a low emissions car is good, although I suspect Stockport's problem is the A6 carrying slow-moving buses and HGVs.

Thank you for posting this news. It can't be well known but I will certainly take advantage as I drive a low-emissions car. It will encourage me to shop in Stockport thus supporting the town centre retailers and will encourage others to purchase environmentally- friendly vehicles.

I have only just heard of this:

The Council has determined that owners of vehicles falling within Emissions Band A are exempt from parking charges.

The exemption applies in on and off street public parking places operated by the Council throughout the borough in respect of vehicles having exhaust emissions below 100g/km.

From Wednesday 1st October 2014 the paper tax disc has been abolished and will no longer need to be displayed in a vehicle windscreen. So that Stockport Council can continue to identify Band 'A' VED vehicles, we request that owners continue to display the tax disc. If you do not have a tax disc, you may apply for a permit (£10 administration fee) to confirm the vehicles eligibility.

To apply for a permit, please complete and return the form below.

Details of a vehicles emission levels can be found on the V5 Registration Document supplied with the vehicle or by using the 'Vehicle Enquiry' function on the Directgov website. For all enquiries relating to this or any other issue, please contact the Parking Team via email at parking@stockport.gov.uk
