Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Edward Yarwood.

Edward and his family had been associated with the Forge Smithy for generations. He left a wife and two young children, a boy and a girl.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Edward Yarwood has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Clarance Byrom.

Sadly no photograph of Clarance (that's how it's spelt on the War Memorial) who died of his wounds while a prisoner of war and was buried with full military honours behind the German lines.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Clarance Byrom has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about George Frederick Taylor.

The harsh winter of 1916/17 did for George, who was admitted to hospital suffering from bronchitis after succumbing to the weather, described as "frosty with a thaw setting in". Within days this had developed into a fatal case of pneumonia.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about George Taylor has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Samuel Platt.

Spare a thought for Samuel's mother, Sarah. Her husband was killed in a car accident near their home not long before 24 year old Samuel was taken from her. Just over one year later she would loose her other son Thomas to the war too, leaving her completely alone in the world.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Samuel Platt has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Joseph Holland.

Joe's was the first death of 1917 for Marple, things having been "quiet" since November. By the end of 1916 45 of 141 had been lost, not quite a third of the final total.

Joseph was not from the area but settled in High Lane after marrying a local girl, Florence. After the war Florence moved to live in the USA and was hopefully able to start a new life.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Joseph Holland has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

It is being placed there by his mother, who is the worthy mother of a noble son, who was a soldier and a gentleman.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Bernard Hartley has now been added. Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Ernest Henry Trust.

There doesn't seem to be much detail known about Ernest and his life in Marple but there are a couple of great photos, one from his time in service and the other as a younger lad a few years earlier in what looks like a Boys Brigade uniform.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Ernest Trust has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 3-4 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Perhaps the most remarkable of all these wonderful tributes so far, in that Basil Carver was still a teenager when he give his life in this extraordinary act of heroism.  Amazing, moving and thought-provoking.

Shortly before his twentieth birthday Lt. Basil Carver was killed while trying to save his men who had been overcome by gas when they were working in a tunnel laying a mine. Basil succumbed to the toxic fumes himself while trying to help them.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Basil Carver has now been added. Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Joseph Bennett.

Joe Bennett battled on until August 1916 before finally secumbing to pneumonia relating to wounds he received in October 1915 during the Battle of Loos. After leaving him in hospital in Wales on a Friday due to a decline in his health his wife received a telegram on the following Monday evening asking her to return urgently. Sadly she was unable to make it in time to see him alive again.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Joe Bennett has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 3-4 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about Fred Thelwall has now been added. Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about William Kent Taylor.

At 43, William was one of our older casualties of WWI. He could have stayed in England as a Drill Sergeant but had wanted to "go out and do something". As it turned out he died of disease leaving a wife, four daughters and three sons to mourn their loss.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information card about William Taylor has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 3-4 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.
