Even more excitement.

From 22/08/2012 until further notice

Marple locks 1 and lock 16 will both be open from 9am – 3pm today the 22nd August 2012 and tomorrow the 23rd August 2012 as one of the tail gates at lock 14 has partially failed.

The lock remains operable with Trust assistance until a repair can be carried out in the next few days. Therefore we have put the flight on assisted passage.

Last entry into the flight will be at 3pm to allow boats to clear by the end of the working day.

Canal & River Trust apologise for any inconvenience caused.

There have been workmen at the spot for a couple of days before the wall collapsed.  They were building a temporary road around the site and had dug away the ground next to the wall. The wall probably collapsed because of that.

Just received these photos taken by Louise Thistleton of the canal bank that has collapsed just below Lock 6. The rest of the wall at that area will probably be in similar condition so this is going to be a big job to repair. It will be interesting how to see how quickly the new owners of the canal system respond to this potentially huge problem for Marple's canal system.
