The guy from McQueens called at our place this evening (Church Lane area) promoting doorstep milk deliveries. He had a strong Liverpool accent. Said I wasn't interested as we already use Midddletons and are quite happy with them. Didn't strive me as dodgy (Ok - apart from the Liverpool accent) - just a company trying to attract custom.

hiya, i didnt get the impression they were a dodgy company either, the salesman was very charming, I thought he had a newcastle accent (?!) I havent got around to phoning them up yet  , but I have had 3 more deliveries, and a letter sent over the weekend from the head office in Warrington with a direct debit mandate to send back .

 I think the price he had quoted was around £2 for 2 litres - which I agreed to trial as he said it was supporting local farmers. This is what i was questioning really, as when I googled them i coudnt find anything about local deliveries, and the price seemed higher than other companies delivering. I will ring them this week and find out a bit more! and then maybe give one of the farms a go that other people have kindly suggested, thanks.

Sounds like A scam to me. A quick search on google shows jobs for mcqueens in warrington but this is retail and wholesale supply only, not home delivery! please don't give your credit card details to any body over the phone!!  especially when it has been arranged by a door to door salesman, think about it

When I lived in Hyde I had milk delivered in Jacksons bottles but the company selling it to me and delivering it was based in Hathersage! Unfortunately the journey from High Lane to Hathersage and back to Hyde in summer frequently resulted in the milk (delivered at around 3am) being off by the time I brought it in at 7.30am. Probably not Jacksons fault but if you use them check where your milk is actually coming from.

There is a local farm producing and selling their own milk - Sun Hill Farm, Marple Bridge - who deliver 3 times a week but only in 2 litres containers which makes it a no-no for singletons like me. A shame as I like to support local businesses.

Which begs a question. The use-by dates on supermarket pasteurised milk. What do they do to it to make it keep for up to two weeks?

McQueens are a Scottish firm which has had a depot in Cheshire since January. They seen perfectly legit.

Only problem in my opinion is that they deliver in plastic containers. Jacksons milk comes in glass bottles - or did up to a year ago when I stopped my deliveries. Glass is properly recyclable whereas plastic isn't.

By the way does anyone know why milk bottles shouldn't be put in the dishwasher (I know - Hyacinth Bucket is me!). The milk man told me that but didn't know why.

We still get Jacksons milk here in Marple via Middletons Dairies in Hathersage. Comes in glass bottles from a dairy in Hazel Grove (according to the bottle) - not sure if it's been to Hathersage first. Haven't had problems with it being off, but it gets put in the fridge quite early (06:30).

I'm only going off what the milkman told me on the one time I met him (at 3am one morning). To be fair the "going off" only seemed to affect my milk in Hyde. When my mother had Middletons in Marple hers seemed to be OK but it was delivered later.

just to clarify that McQueens Dairies is not a scam, it's a company based in Scotland. They deliver milk door to door in a few parts of England too.
