At school we were told that from the lodge cottage on the tow path off Station Road, that there are tunnels there that lead up to All Saints Church and were used by Oldknows child workers to keep them out of sight from the community as the community found the orphan children offensive

We spent an enjoyable hour bushwhacking through the Dan Bank undergrowth down in the valley this afternoon....but saw no signs of any tunnel entrances! Has anyone got a clearer idea of where to look...if they're still there at all?

I have emailed the Stockport Heritage magazine to see if they have information about them or if they know anyone who will investigate the tunnels as it is fascinating stuff !

Have to say it sounds a fascinating story - and am very tempted to dust off the caving lamps. I would like more information about tunnel size and construction though before wandering for a mile or so underground. If a man-made adit would be interesting enough to get off the water for. I did notice the original poster from MHS did not leave any further details nor have his tunnel rat colleagues from the 80's (or their mums) added to the post.

Adding to this when young we explored the tunnel that enters the Etherow just below Compstall Bridge - It originally came from the Bleach Works - sandy, scary and much better with a big, big torch rather than cycle lamps!

Well I've just wasted an hour of my life, I've walked the banking from rear of the houses on Stockport Road to Hilltop Drive and including the site of the old shelter but to no avail!! There are no signs of a tunnel entrance and from memory I hung out in the shelter (on many occasions) in my youth and there were no doors leading out of it other than the entrance / exit!, trust me, if there were I would have been through them. Any further information would be greatly received and appreciated as I have a few other tunnels in the area that are on my to do list, which exclude the 'well known' ones.
