actually I know I didn't make it sound so, but the point I was trying to make was not that of hiding behind an alias, but knowing you're making a statement as yourself.  It might on occasion make you step back and think more carefully about what you write!

It does on occasion do that to me :)

I appreciate aliases are a standard internet board/chat thing but that doesn't mean its right or an unbreakable rule!  We're all in OUR village discussing OUR village and its a bit different from most sites!! In fact having trolled through a tonne of local websites over the last few years I know its the only truly active local forum that I found!

We're bloody excellent and different us lot... as is Mark :D  Maybe we should start celebrating how fantastic this is and the fact we have access to such a fantastic tool to express our opinions.

Well said Lisa.
I'm willing to wager there are a few lacking the courage to reveal their real names, mainly due to offence they have caused on this forum . And before I'm accused of double standards please remember that one of you thought it apropriate to to print my name and was applauded for doing so.
It would not bother me in the slightest if people knew my identity, reason being, is that I would say openly the things I have posted on the forum, because either, I believe in what I say or I have the right to an opinion!  Which brings me back to the subject of Arm Chair Socialism  :-\

Or maybe they just don't want to? Its fairly common practice to use aliases on the internet for security and privacy, not just cowardice  :)

Well Said PP.  Ive been half avoiding the forum myself for reasons you stated!  BUT I also agree with Miss Marple that this IS a powerful and wonderful resource that CAN effect change and long may it continue.

Sometimes its hard for people who are not "that bothered" about a particular matter to understand the depth of feeling people who are bothered have and I know from experience how frustrating it can be when people don't appear to see and treat issues that are important to individuals as serious.

I use my own name because I don't believe in using an id that people cant recognise me from.  I will never say anything here that I wouldn't say to anyones face and don't ever want to I want all my comments associated with ME.  Lots of people on here know exactly who I am where they can find me if they want to continue any conversation or debate and it stops me getting stroppy and bad tempered and at times down right rude!  I work in the ringers and have had several discussion with several of you about who is who... and who might that be... Theres an awful lot of us who are long term users of this forum and I think we really should know every one now but i guess only Mark knows the most and maybe not all of us. As PP said, We're neighbours!!

Maybe we should have more real names on here ?

I think it's best if we don't allow ourselves to get too serious. An exchange of views and maybe a bit of good-humoured banter is all we should expect. I'm not sure this sort of informal group of chatterboxes could ever change anything (but I'd love to be proved wrong!)

If you do not have a forum which is open to debate it can become an arm chair socialists paradise.  I read with intrest members concerns and anguish as to what is happening in our area but note that they use the forum just to talk or like many of us complain!   A forum that can debate and bring about change would be far more beneficial to the community and may have in some way  prevented the loss of buildings of intrest, trees and a host of other SMBC ill thought out changes.  If people say that they are proud of the area we live in then surly it's in their best intrest to be at the front line of change.  For example the Memorial Park toilets are going to close!  So what are we going to do about it as a group of people who claim they have the villages best intrest at heart.

I agree, many forums make this one look tame  BUT usually these are forums where people can hide behind a name, and its not generally where people are living on eachothers doorsteps ( that I am aware of, and I am a member of a few) .

We live local to eachother, and those who don't, I assume would post because they have a connection to the area.

Its OK to say that we should look at other forums  ... but reality is, people are getting upset, things are taken the wrong way ( I'm guilty of taking as well as giving in that department)  .. but ask yourself ... if you found out the person you had upset lived in the house next door to you for example  ... would you still say it was OK to say what we like to eachother , would you knock on the door of that persons house and say the same thing .... I don't think many of us would ( and if you would, I hope you dont live next door to me !!).

Yes, we can look at other forums, and many forums are classed as communities, the difference is, we are living in the community that we post about , we could be winding up the person sat on the bus next to us ( for example)  ... we are all different, and there is nowt as funny as folk  ... but its something I have thought about quite a bit of late when visiting the forum .

A forum full of JUST silly poems would lead to some departures without a doubt ( my mouse hovers over favourites list at the thought.........) and what this forum needs is more participation not less.

my comment was tongue in cheek about silly poems..... more fun.. less arguments was my point.

I agree, moorendman. And anyone taking offence at anything said on this forum needs to take a look at some others, where, sadly, vitriolic abuse and aggression are commonplace. Compared with some of those, this forum is extremely civilised, and long may it stay that way!

Forum debates are not for everyone and perhaps topics should be marked with a health warning/or A for Adult certification then those that do not relish the arguments could avoid them. Personally I think the forum would be a lot poorer without some debate ( although i know that Steptoe will disagree 8) ) I would fully endorse Admin's comments that the written word needs care and can be misinterpreted, I have seen so many fall out in forums before.

How about a Rhino or Elephant Logo against the post - Pachyderms only ( Thick skinned !)

A forum full of JUST silly poems would lead to some departures without a doubt ( my mouse hovers over favourites list at the thought.........) and what this forum needs is more particpation not less.

I hold back a lot of the time in posting on here, seems you either have to agree with everything what is being said or get grilled and abused for having your own opinion.
I think Dan Bank is looking much better, so much lighter now..yes it was shocking when they first started cutting trees down, but it wasn't given a chance before some members were up in arms about it.. even now things are not moving along quick enough... give it chance guys.
I've lived in Marple all my life, I'm proud to live in Marple, but get frustrated by peoples attitudes and hot headed comments

can we not go back to silly poems about pigeons and be a bit more light hearted?
