Just came across this post from 2010....

I happened to be up by Rachel's stile for a different reason (see below) but to answer the original question; I understand that Rachel Lowe, who loved the walk to and views from this point, often visiting with her dog, sadly died young of meningitis.

Why was I up there? Perhaps I'm going mad but I'm sure there used to be some sort of "cat" carving/memorial near to Rachel's stile. Told the kids about it when we were up there in the snow just after Christmas and was wandering in the area again today. Could I find it? Could I 'eck. So, am I imagining it or has my memory challenged me geographically? And if it does exist, what's the back story please?

Visited Rachel's Style today in Mellor, does anyone know the reason for Rachel's death the plaque erected, although a beautiful poem, written by her does not give any other indication as to why it was named after her or the circumstances surrounding it
