Left just before 7am this morning - eventually turned back at Trafford Park as the M60 ahead over the canal was blocked by 2 jackknifed lorries. Arrived back in Marple about 11am - 4 hours to do probably 30 miles. Saw painfully too much poor driving (stopping on an incline to take a mobile phone call (causing several cars behind to have to stop), not anticipating far enough ahead, failing to carry momentum up hill, not using engine braking to get safely down hill, hard acceleration/ breaking and steering etc.) No wonder people are getting stuck and inconveniencing others. It's not just the lack of grit!

There are some advantages to being retired, then!!  Seriously, I feel sorry for anyone trying to get to work today, and hope no one is hurt because of the weather.

An interesting morning out there today. I set off for work at 6.30am and after seeing a car and bus stuck coming up Dan Bank and others struggling up the hill towards Offerton I detoured left towards Hazel Grove and came home via the A6 and Windlehurst. Met a couple of my neighbours leaving as I got back and they decided to stay home too. Another neighbour who left around the same time as me has just got back again and my son got as far as Stockport and has decided to turn around too. He's still out there!

Has anyone else fared better?

Interesting post on how the Dutch were coping. They did mention that the side streets were still hazardous, but all efforts were being made to get the cycle paths open. In fact, side streets not linking the cycle network were left untouched. If you've never been to Holland, it's hard to appreciate the number of people on bikes. Aren't they lucky they don't have a Brabyns Brow, Dan Bank or Longhurst Lane to worry about. It made me laugh recently when my uncle told me he had a new "mountain bike" (he lives in Enschede). (There are NO hills in Holland).

It was interesting to note that Brabyns Brow is a second level priority route for gritting on Stockport Councils winter plan. This means there are five other routes that require gritting before Brabyns Brow gets attention. It may go some way towards explaining the traffic chaos and accidents on the road over the last few days - definitely a time for 4x4 which the majority in Mellor appear to already have!
