It's serious news, sgk, and it's surely only going to get worse.  Pubs up and down the country are closing at an unprecedented rate, because of this crippling quadruple whammy:
  • The recession
  • The smoking ban
  • Ever-increasing taxation
  • Supermarkets selling cheap booze
We've already lost most of our local post offices and shops, outside Marple town centre, and if we lose more pubs as well, that will be a real blow to local communities.  As they say, 'you won't miss it till it's gone!'

We do also have to blame the landlords, I know they have not got it easy at the moment (who has) but it seems that the landlords that have done nothing to help themselves eg, quiz nights bbq's at the weekend etc have lost there pub, yet the ones that have are still open. Take the Ringers, Pete has got a great pub there and he works his fingers to the bone to keep it that way.

I am not passing the blame entirely but you only have to look around.

The breweries have got a lot to do with the closures also as they still want there money come hell or high water.

I see the Rock Tavern has opened again, after being closed up for a few months.

And is the Spring Gardens completely shut down now?  Shame if so, had a great beer garden for kids round the back.

Seems there's a lot of pubs closing at the mo' http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/5878378/Beer-tax-blamed-as-pub-closures-in-Britain-jump-to-52-a-week.html, 52 per week.
