Embarrassed  Having had family in the pub game in the past and recently speaking to local Landlords and Landladies.....
I think the breweries are ripping the licensees off and making it harder for them to trade and make their chosen profession profitable.
Most are forced to buy the brewery beer granted, but the inflated prices the brewery's charge is scandolous not only to the licensees but also to US the paying public  Sad. Bottled beer can be purchased in supermarkets for around 50p a bottle by the public and the licensees are forced to buy off the brewery at around £1.30 a bottle. Surely this can only inflate the prices we pay? ( Just look how many people frequent a pub during the week these days)
I find it a terrible shame that the breweries are forcing our Landlords and Landladies slowly into oblivion. If this highway robbery continues I can see us being localless in the non too distant future. Does anyone out there feel the same? ps I do not work or am not related to anyone in the pub game now.

Agreed - this is a very serious issue.  There are, I believe, something like 30 pubs per week closing across the UK.  But the main culprits are not the breweries, IMHO, but the Government, and the major supermarket chains.  The Government, fuelled by the hysteria about binge drinking, keeps raising the tax on alcoholic drinks in an indiscriminate way, which is hitting very hard at pubs.  When VAT was reduced last Monday, for example, they increased duty on booze so that it remains just just as expensive.

And the supermarkets are also to blame, because they are selling cheap beer and lager at 'loss leader' prices with which pubs can't compete.  The Government could stop this, but they won't, for some reason (conspiracy theorists may have ideas, though!)

If you ask visitors from abroad what they like best about the UK, many of them say the pubs.  But we are losing them fast, as we have already lost so many local shops and post offices.  And when these places close, we lose meeting places which are a vital part of any real community.   And once they have gone, we will never get them back.   Cry

In Marple especially it'a a problem, Robbie's have a monopoloy - I *long* for a local that does something other than Unicorn!, Oh for the silky smooth joys of a nice pint of Pedigree or Black Sheep....

I had a couple of pints of Black Sheep in the Spring Gardens 2weeks ago.
I'm sure the Romper does some guest ales as well? The certainly used to, but agreed Robbies do have a monopoly around here.

They do nice guest beers at the Romper but they are too expensive.   Cry  The Sportsman in Strines always has a good selection.

Both nice pubs, but neither are actually *in* Marple. Getting out to them is not a problem but walking home on dark country lanes after a couple of pints? Not me, thanks!

The Navigation is the second best pub in Marple and with this news it may well take the top spot.  Frankly I'm salivating at the prospect of imbibing some expertly pulled Unicorn and may have to abandon my post early this evening for a brief libation to celebrate...  At those prices I reckon you could even permit a post-pub sojourn to Gulshan for a cheek-warmer and still have change for the bus!

Go back 20 years ago the Navi was the best pub in Marple. Wedding functions, good food and beer ,Brass Band concerts on a Sundays . No football and bad language was not tolerated by the landlord.
