Stockport children and local communities are set to benefit from improved primary school facilities following a bid for funding from the Government’s Primary Capital Programme.

Stockport Council recently learned that it will gain over £3million of funding in 2009/10, giving a massive financial boost to primary school education in the borough. The principles within the Council’s bid have been approved and funding allocated is for the first year of a fourteen year programme.

The funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) will enable Stockport to deliver its vision to create primary schools which are equipped for 21st century teaching and learning.

Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member for Children & Young People, said: “Stockport already provides an exceptionally good standard of education for children in primary schools with performances in KS1 and KS2 tests improving year-on-year. Securing this Government funding is excellent news as it will allow the Council to make long term and lasting improvements to primary schools in Stockport to provide even better learning facilities for children and communities for years to come.”

The DCSF has asked for further work from 92 of the local authorities to meet a number of conditions by March 2009. Subject to their agreement, a further £5.68million will be made available to Stockport for 2010/11, making a total of £8.72million over the first two years of the Programme. Further funding will be announced over time, subject to the government’s regular spending reviews.

Councillor Mark Weldon, added: “The Council’s bid has been approved subject to these few conditions and I’m extremely confident that we will be able to satisfy all these conditions by March 2009.”
