Free personal alarms "stay safe at Christmas"

With Christmas just around the corner, the Council is urging people to stay safe when enjoying the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Council has got together with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, a national charity which specialises in personal safety advice, to provide some useful tips and pointers to help stay safe coming home from work or an evening out, especially during the dark nights.

These include:

Plan how you are going to get home

Use a taxi or licensed minicab

Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged and has enough credit

Travel home with a friend if possible

Have your door keys ready

Know your route

If waiting for a train or bus stay in a well-lit place near other people

Avoid isolated shortcuts when walking

Councillor Hazel Lees, Executive Member for Communities, said: “We want people to enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations, but at the same time stay safe. By taking simple precautions such as planning your route home, making sure you have a full tank of petrol and that your mobile phone is fully charged, you can help minimise the risks of travelling in the dark late at night.”

Jo Walker from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, added: “We want people to be aware of the possible risks without putting the brakes on fun nights out. And by linking up with Stockport’s Community Pride campaign, we can get these important personal safety messages out to people in time for the Christmas and New Year festivities.”

And as part of its Community Pride programme, the Council is offering free personal alarms. To order an alarm, send a text message with your name and Stockport address to 07797 806539. Personal safety alarms are subject to availability and text messages will cost the standard rate as per the terms and conditions from your mobile network provider.
