MARPLE NWR AUTUMN 2017

The Marple Branch of the National Women's Register (NWR) meet fortnightly on Monday evenings in members' homes to discuss all subjects, for example cultural and political matters, but also have trips to the theatre and meals out etc.  There is also a book club. All meetings start at 8.00 pm unless otherwise stated:

4TH SEPTEMBER: AGM & TRAVELLER’S TALES.

18TH SEPTEMBER: HOW COULD YOU LIVE IN A CASHLESS SOCIETY? Does the idea frighten you or will it make life that bit easier?

2ND OCTOBER: CHOOSE 3 ELECTRICAL ITEMS THAT YOU COULD’NT LIVE WITHOUT. What things would you never buy?

23RD OCTOBER: WHEN WE ARE MARRIED, GARRICK THEATRE STOCKPORT. Lifts to be arranged. J.B. Priestley's 1938 play When We Are Married follows three couples that were all married on the same day by the same vicar, reunited 25 years later.

PLEASE NOTE ONLY ONE WEEK GAP!

30TH OCTOBER: RESEARCH A TOWN OR VILLAGE WITH AN UNUSUAL NAME. What’s the history of it?

13TH NOVEMBER: TELEPHONE TREASURE TRAIL 7.50 PM.  To enable a prompt start.

27TH NOVEMBER: ARE WE LIVING TOO LONG? Is the crisis in the health service due partly to our life/health expectations?

11TH DECEMBER: A MAGICAL EVENING WITH ROGER. Please bring seasonal nibbles/drinks

MAY 15TH: CHAD’S THEATRE TRIP “VISITING MR GREEN” By JEFF BARRON (Chad’s Theatre, Cheadle).
JUNE 12TH: WOMEN IN FILM Choose an Actress. Is (or was) she typecast?
JUNE 19TH: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN EXTRA DATE! GARRICK THEATRE TRIP PIAF PAT GEMS
An evocative ensemble drama celebrating the remarkable rise of Edith Piaf, from her origins in the back streets of Paris to a glittering international singing career and lasting fame, interspersed with unforgettable music. GARRICK THEATRE, STOCKPORT.
JUNE 26TH: SUMMER WALK Short walk probably followed by a visit to a local hostelry MEET AT THE LIBRARY.
JULY 10TH: ARE OUR POLITICIANS WORTHY OF OUR RESPECT? If the answer is no are we still able to engage in British politics??
JULY 24TH: PLANNING, Bring some INTERNATIONAL SAYINGS, preferably translated! ENJOY SOME BRITISH  COUNTY FOOD

JAN 9: Beetle Drive - Please bring a paper bag containing THREE prizes, each worth 50p, £1and £1.50. And maybe a dice or two?
JAN 30: Garrick Theatre, Stockport “Di, Viv and Rose” by Amelia Bullmore, (screenwriter of TV’s This Life, and Scott and Bailey)
FEB 6: Are drugs oversubscribed? Are we addicted as a nation, to the idea that a pill can cure anything? What can we do to secure the future of the NHS?
FEB 20: Play Reading
MARCH 6: What will be your cultural highlights of  2017? If money and time are not a problem what would you like to see and experience at home and abroad?
MARCH 20: Brazil - Research the country, it’s heritage, perhaps it’s indigenous population but, perhaps more importantly, don’t forget it’s FOOD!
APRIL 3: Prisons.  What can we do about them, do they work, is there an alternative? Has anyone ever visited one?

12th September: AGM, including collection of subs.(£23) and review of book/s from “A Good Read 2016”   
26th September: Did you know that there was a British Housewives’League  formed in 1945? Research and discuss.
10th October: “The Potters’ Village-restoring hope to helpless children” Brenda will talk to us about this Crisis Centre in Uganda.
17th October: Garrick Theatre: “The Last of the Haussmans” by Stephen Beresford (about growing old disgracefully)
31st October:  What happened to the GM Food Debate? Should we be vegan? (Vegan food welcome)
7th November: NWR Telephone Treasure Trail. Be ready to start at 8pm.
21st November: Research a Nobel Prize Winner
5th December: Feedback on recent “Faith in our Future” Day Conference. Also programme planning.
19th December: A Cheese and Drink evening: tasting the difference between well-known brands.

11th April - England is low in the Happiness League for 8yr.olds. What can we do to change this?(Also vote for the book/s from NWR Reading List).
25th April - Our changing eating habits (roast dinners are starting to disappear). Bring examples and samples.
9th May - Do we have too many choices?  What choices would you like to have?
23rd May - Chad’s Theatre, C/Hulme: The Lady Killers.
6th June - 2016 Anniversaries: choose a notable one and tell us about it.
20th June - Visit to the Well Dressings at Litton and Tideswell  (more details, including timing, to follow).
4th July - Local walk, meeting outside Marple Library 7pm.
18th July - A games evening plus programme planning.

11th January - Favourite places, books and music: what would you recommend and why?
1st February - GARRICK THEATRE: A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney.
8th February - Murder Mystery Play Reading: “The Semitones” by Linda Messham.
Saturday 13th February 7pm - “New Year Party” with a Chinese theme: please dress accordingly!
22nd February - We have “Woman’s Hour”. Should there be a “Men’s Hour” and what should be in it?
7th March - Population: a looming crisis? What do we do about controlling it?  Plus programme planning.
21st March - Germany is NWR’s themed country for 2016. An evening of information and refreshments.
