MARPLE NWR AUTUMN PROGRAMME 2018

The Marple Branch of the National Women's Register (NWR) meet fortnightly on Monday evenings in members' homes to discuss all subjects, for example cultural and political matters, but also have trips to the theatre and meals out etc.  There is also a book club. All meetings start at 8.00 pm unless otherwise stated:

September 17th - AGM – subs due – bring a cheque book! Be a bag lady – bring 3 things of personal significance in a bag and we’ll try to guess whose bag is whose.
October 1st - Women explorers/inventors/scientists. Who do you admire?
October 15th - What’s on your bucket list? Tell us about your top three.
October 29th - Jobs for the girls. What strange jobs have you done? What would be your dream job?
November 12th - Telephone Treasure Trail. Prompt start at 8pm.
November 26th - Speaker – Neil Charman will tell us about The Marple Plan
December 10th - Bring a reading/poem/music on a Christmassy theme. Mulled wine & mince pies. Plus planning for spring.

MARPLE NWR SUMMER PROGRAMME 2018

April 16th - Harassment and abuse. Do you have any experience? Or someone you know? How should we tackle it?
April 30th - Robots and artificial intelligence. Should we be excited or worried?
May 14th - Romania. Bring some interesting information and some food.
June 4th - Plastics – what are we doing to the earth but can we live without them?
June 18th - Summer walk. Meet at Marple Library at 7pm
July 2nd - Games evening. Bring outdoor games if it’s fine, indoor games if it’s raining.
July 16th - Wine & Cheese. Plus planning for the autumn. Just bring your ideas - wine & cheese provided.

MARPLE NWR SPRING PROGRAMME 2018

January 15th - Would I lie to you? Bring a truth or a lie about yourself and try to fool the rest of us. (If you haven’t seen it on TV, you might want to watch an episode first)
January 29th - Internet dating. Bring your profile and see if we can guess who you are (the funnier the better).
February 12th - Schools. Could you explain the English education system to a foreigner? Free, grammar, state, public, private, faith schools. What do you think?
February 26th - Murder mystery play reading.
March 5th - Handbagged – Conversations between HRH and Mrs Thatcher - Chad’s Theatre - Names to Sue Davies asap.
March 26th - Book review. Get reading – either Galileo’s Daughter by Dava Sobel. And/or The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.

18TH SEPTEMBER: HOW COULD YOU LIVE IN A CASHLESS SOCIETY? Does the idea frighten you or will it make life that bit easier?
2ND OCTOBER: CHOOSE 3 ELECTRICAL ITEMS THAT YOU COULD’NT LIVE WITHOUT. What things would you never buy?
23RD OCTOBER: WHEN WE ARE MARRIED, GARRICK THEATRE STOCKPORT. Lifts to be arranged. J.B. Priestley's 1938 play When We Are Married follows three couples that were all married on the same day by the same vicar, reunited 25 years later.
30TH OCTOBER: RESEARCH A TOWN OR VILLAGE WITH AN UNUSUAL NAME. What’s the history of it?
13TH NOVEMBER: TELEPHONE TREASURE TRAIL 7.50 PM.  To enable a prompt start.
27TH NOVEMBER: ARE WE LIVING TOO LONG? Is the crisis in the health service due partly to our life/health expectations?
11TH DECEMBER: A MAGICAL EVENING WITH ROGER. Please bring seasonal nibbles/drinks

JUNE 12TH: WOMEN IN FILM Choose an Actress. Is (or was) she typecast?
JUNE 19TH: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN EXTRA DATE! GARRICK THEATRE TRIP PIAF PAT GEMS
An evocative ensemble drama celebrating the remarkable rise of Edith Piaf, from her origins in the back streets of Paris to a glittering international singing career and lasting fame, interspersed with unforgettable music. GARRICK THEATRE, STOCKPORT.
JUNE 26TH: SUMMER WALK Short walk probably followed by a visit to a local hostelry MEET AT THE LIBRARY.
JULY 10TH: ARE OUR POLITICIANS WORTHY OF OUR RESPECT? If the answer is no are we still able to engage in British politics??
JULY 24TH: PLANNING, Bring some INTERNATIONAL SAYINGS, preferably translated! ENJOY SOME BRITISH  COUNTY FOOD

MARPLE NWR WINTER PROGRAMME 2017

JAN 9: Beetle Drive - Please bring a paper bag containing THREE prizes, each worth 50p, £1and £1.50. And maybe a dice or two?
JAN 30: Garrick Theatre, Stockport “Di, Viv and Rose” by Amelia Bullmore, (screenwriter of TV’s This Life, and Scott and Bailey)
FEB 6: Are drugs oversubscribed? Are we addicted as a nation, to the idea that a pill can cure anything? What can we do to secure the future of the NHS?
FEB 20: Play Reading
MARCH 6: What will be your cultural highlights of  2017? If money and time are not a problem what would you like to see and experience at home and abroad?
MARCH 20: Brazil - Research the country, it’s heritage, perhaps it’s indigenous population but, perhaps more importantly, don’t forget it’s FOOD!
APRIL 3: Prisons.  What can we do about them, do they work, is there an alternative? Has anyone ever visited one?
