Look out for our two page "Then and Now" feature in the new Visit Marple booklet being distributed to local homes and available in local outlets like the Ring o' Bells!

Yesterday's additions to the Virtual Tour saw us pass the amazing milestone of 500,000 images viewed. In fact, around 1,000 images were viewed yesterday alone, which is pretty impressive.

An image view (sorry if I'm starting the obvious) is when someone views one of the pictures at full size, rather than looking at the thumbnails.

It has taken around 2.5 years to reach this total. Wonder how long to our first 1,000,000 views  8)

A dozen new images covering a variety of subjects have been added to the Tour this morning. Thanks are due to Ray Noble, Ann Papageorgiou, Ray Shepherd and T. Minch for their contributions.

They include some shots of the houses on Coombes Avenue being built in the mid 1980s, Marple Boys Brigade camping in 1952, the opening of Marple Co-Op on Market Street in 1913, All Saints' pupils in 1946-47, the old cross on Cobden Edge and several others. Fascinating stuff - keep 'em coming folks!

This morning a new category has been created on the Virtual Tour to hold colour photographs from Marple Civic Society's archives that were taken in the early 1990s. Just over 100 of these photos featured in the Society's exhibition about the Listed Buildings of Marple and District in 1993.

The first dozen of the photos exhibited have just been uploaded and the remainder will be added progressively. Once that is complete there are a couple of hundred that were not included in the exhibition to add as well!

We'd like to thank Marple Civic Society once again for sharing their archives with us and, by doing that, sharing them with everyone. Visit their web site at www.marplecivicsociety.org.uk to learn more about the Society's activities.

You can use the usual link to latest additions or go directly to the new album using this link:

A special Easter treat - uploaded to the Tour this morning are a dozen photos of pupils at our local schools in the first half of the last century (All Saints' plus one Albert Schools). Many of the All Saints' ones are already featured in our 2002 tribute to All Saints' School at www.marple-uk.net/allsaints but they merit a place in the Virtual Tour Galleries too.

Several of the photos have lists of names with them, which always makes them more interesting. These are displayed in the comments where available. If you can identify anyone else we'd be delighted to know.

All being well more will be added tomorrow.

Another 12 fantastic images from Ann & Peter's "Then and Now" have just been added to the Tour. These should help push us on towards the milestone of half a million views!

Another dozen pictures were added to the Tour earlier today but then the server went AWOL for a few hours soon after. Things appear to be working again so you can now see them. They include several from Ray Noble, a few more from Then and Now plus some that I "discovered" in my in-box when I was looking for something else  :-[

As if it's not bad enough losing an hour off the day, I've just lost 3 more having to apply a security upgrade to the Virtual Tour! That's scuppered most of the things I was planning to do today but at least I can now add more images to the Tour. We've recently discovered that some of the pictures used in Peter & Ann Hearle's book Then & Now (and some that didn't make it) weren't on the Tour already. Having realised that we can now put it right and these are the first dozen of approximately 70 fascinating images.

A mixed bag of updates to the Tour this morning include the last from the B&W Civic Society photo album, featuring the Lime Kilns, some great school photos from All Saints' and Albert School, a couple of recent shots of Marple Band at their 2008 Christmas concert and the picture of Rhodes Houses mentioned in a separate post.

In addition, we've discovered the names of the people in Marple's 1920/21 Lacrosse Team photo, so that has been updated, see: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-601

Some more photos of Treetops have been added to the Tour this morning. These were taken shortly before the demolition by Coral Dranfield. There are also some present day photos of the basement at the George Hotel in Compstall taken by Ruth Hargreaves that have been added too. Apparently when the current bridge near to the George was constructed the level of the road was raised and the building was extended upwards to match it. There is evidence of this in some of Ruth's photos.

Catching up all over, some new pictures were uploaded to the Tour on 8th February but I didn't post here due to the server problems until now.
