A mixed batch of 30 new images from Marple Local History Society Archives have been uploaded to the Marple Website Virtual History Tour this evening.

They include some amazing shots of buildings at the Church Lane / Stockport Road junction that were demolished in 1943:

A fantastic view of the Hollins Mill from Stockport Road:

Canal bridge modifications at the Ring o' Bells and Andrew Lane:

The enormous wall around the Brabyns Estate when it was owned by the Hudson family:

Plus many more: https://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

This image has been on the Virtual Tour for many years, simply identified as an unknown group:

Today, thanks to Simon Campbell, grandson of the young girl Eunice Field (far right above) we now know much more about them. This is Simon's description:
  • Seated Man = Walter Henry Field - Manager at Marple Dale Farm Training Colony (born 1868)
  • Seated Woman = Sarah Ellen Field (nee Henshall) - his wife (born 1867)
  • Young man / teenager = Bernard Field (their son) (born 1903)
  • Young girl = Eunice Field (their daughter) (born 1909)
  • The two other young women in the flamboyant attire, may be other daughters (Florence May Field (born 1893) and Jessie Field (born 1896)).
  • The other older woman may be a relative (sister ?) of Walter or Sarah. My guess is that she is Sarah's sister (a) because she had several and (b) her family came from Wilmslow, (c) I am not sure if Walter had any sisters (though this is ignorance rather than certainty).
We also now have this much better quality photo taken at the same time, plus two of Walter and Sarah. One of these was taken at the same time and the other looks like they are quite a lot younger (it could be their wedding possibly). We're still not sure why they are in fancy dress like this in circa 1919 (based on the estimated age of Eunice).

Walter Henry Field was the first Manager of the Marple Farm Colony from around 1908 and I think this is him and his family at the Farm Colony in the very early days, although even on the larger scan I have, it's not possible to be certain:

With apologies to @David Myers for overlooking these 3 great images when he sent them in May, here is his Great Aunt Heather Plevin in the shop on Rhode Houses in Hawk Green that was owned by Heather and her husband Charles. They've been added to the Virtual Tour this morning:

Three images linked to the Albert Schools recently provided to Marple Local History Society have been uploaded to the Virtual Tour this morning:

https://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-120

The above includes: Back row 2nd from left Maurice Chew. Back row 2nd from right though to be Billy Harrop (greengrocer on corner of Market St and Derby Way). Front row 2nd from right thought to be named Murdoch.

Another couple of dozen images from the Janet Holmes collection have been added to the Virtual History Tour this morning.

https://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

These include a number of Roman Bridge postcards not seen before (this must be Marple's most photographed location):

An incredibly narrow Church Lane outside the Conservative Club:

And the Iron Bridge in Brabyns Park when it was still gated:

Mark,
Looking at the Strines Road Canal Arm photo (also posted today), I’d say the house on the right of both pictures is the same one
Hi Mark,
I don’t know how to comment on the individual photo’s that have been posted (today) but is the 5th one, view from Elm Grove, looking across from Oldknow Road towards Strines Road with Arkwright Road on the left and the playing/football field in the centre?

I think that's a really good shout @Lily here they are side by side:

It looks like all 3 houses match up actually, so well spotted.

That would mean the Elm Grove one would be taken from somewhere around the present day junction of Oldknow Road and Arkwright Rd but I can't find any reference to Elm Grove on the old maps covering that area.

This thread explains how to sign up to make comments on the Virtual Tour: http://www.marple-uk.com/smf/index.php?topic=3381.0

During the summer historian Ann Hearle and I met with members of the Bagshawe family, descendants of Ernest and Alice Carver, who changed their family name to Bagshawe after Alice's father died in 1914. Ernest and Alice were the parents of Geoffrey Hamilton Bagshawe, who was killed in May 1915 and is featured on the Time-line in the park.

The family has recently passed on a couple of images of Ernest and Alice to Marple Local History Society and these have been uploaded to the Virtual History Tour this morning:

In this photo of the Carver family on the steps of Hollins House in 1914 Ernest is 2nd from the right in the back row:

There's one annotated on the back as the "Miners Arms", which, according to Jack Turnbull's "Last Orders Please" was once at Moor End in Mellor. However, the sign over the door says the "Jordan Arms" and the landlord was William Butler. A bit of surfing suggests that this was in New Mills - can anyone confirm?

After investigations by MLHS's Bill Beard the following comment has been added for this image: https://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=9057

The map link below gives the location of the Jordan Arms at Jordanwall Nook. In Jack Turnbull's book "Last Orders Please" he suggests that one of the pubs in the area was known as the Miners but was not the official name. A bit like the Foresters in Romiley that is known as the 'Piggy'. There is more info in the MLHS book by Derek Brumhead about mining in the area. https://maps.nls.uk/view/114586112
