Over the last week or so the Virtual Tour software has been upgraded to the latest version, which has been quite involved but is now complete except for a few tweaks that I still need to make. Although you probably won't notice much difference at the moment the upgrade will now allow me to introduce some new features and options that were not available before and I'll announce these as they are enabled. In the meantime, I've now uploaded over 30 Carnival images that Ray Noble sent in after digging through his bottomless drawer of Carnival snaps through the ages! Many thanks Ray, sorry for the delay but I couldn't put them on-line until the upgrade was finished. Another Marple Website Virtual History Tour First! I have just finished uploading the first of several Marple Local History Society videos of local people talking about their memories. This one is of Tom Oldham, who was born in Mellor in 1910, talking in 1997 to Gordon Mills and Stanley Knott as they filmed him. The 54 minute VHS video has been converted to digital format and uploaded in five segments to make it easier for visitors to view without having to start at the beginning every time. As this is the first of these it is a little bit experimental and I would appreciate any feedback on your experience of viewing the files - hopefully you history buffs will enjoy! Mr Wilfred Woodhouse of Stockport Road. Marple was driving a motor car down the Brow about 7.15pm when the back axle broke and he lost control and had to leap for his life. The car went down the steep incline at a great speed, zig-zagging as it went along. It then crashed into the shop of Miss Wood, draper & newsagent, at the bottom of the Brow. It knocked a great hole in the building and covered the inside of the shop with dust. The spare wheel of the motorcar broke away from its fastening and was sent whirling across the road and it entered the lobby of the Midland Hotel, and struck the door and burst it open. Mr Jubb, the licensee, was struck by the woodwork of the door. The motorcar was badly smashed. The windscreen was broken and the ironwork was bent, twisted and broken. Fortunately there were no very serious injuries. (HPR 3.11.1923) |

A selection of photos of Marple Bridge and Brabyns Brow from Marple Local History Society Archives have been added to the Tour this morning.
