Photos of the Merchant Navy Day Ceremony held in Memorial Park last Sunday taken by Ray Noble have been added to the Tour this morning. http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

Although you can't really tell from these photos I understand that the attendance was poor and Ron Singleton has decided not to organise the ceremony again in the future. The flag will still be flown in the park during the week of Merchant Navy Day.

A dozen photos from Marple Carnival 2009 taken by Julian Winstanley have been uploaded to the Tour this morning, see http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-70

Better late than never, due to technical issues with the CD and failing memory (mine not the computer!)

Four new images have been added to the Tour this morning. One is a picture of Hawk Green provided by Coral Dranfield and another is a watercolour painting of Marple Hall sent by a descendant of the Hodgkinson family that owned Hollins Mill (with the Carvers). That prompted me to add the images of the Recreation Ground Medal, which we've had on the main site since we wrote in the Community News.

During tomorrow's Locks Festival look out for the brand new book "Marple & District Through Time" on the Stockport Heritage tent. The book is a fresh look at Marple through old postcards and photographs alongside present day shots and has been produced by Steve Cliffe and Coral Dranfield of Stockport Heritage Trust.

The majority of the old photos in the book were provided by us from the Virtual Tour and there is a great acknowledgement at the end explaining this and asking folks to get in touch with us if they have photos to share.

We're really pleased that our efforts to build the "Tour" over the last few years have supported the production of this book and congratulate Steve and Coral on their great work.

Ray - you get a mention in the acknowledgements too  8)

Seven new images were added to the Tour last night (captioned this morning) including another find of Ray's featuring All Saints' School children from the 1940s. There is also a lantern slide of Marple Hall, a copy of the warrant for the execution of King Charles I and a few postcards recently acquired.

A series of photographs taken during the 1990 "Oldknow 200" Festival have been added to a new Events Album on the Virtual Tour this morning. These have kindly been provided by Ann Hearle of Marple Local History Society. Now that they are on-line Ann will be giving us some more details to enable the captions to be improved.

"Oldknow 200" was a two week long festival held in 1990 to celebrate the achievements of Samuel Oldknow and the bicentenary of the erection of Mellor Mill. The event must have provided numerous photo opportunities and we hope that local people will be inspired to dig through their drawers to and find more pictures from the celebrations that we can add to this album to make it more representative of the whole festival.

Incidentally, these additions take the number of images in the Tour to more than 3,000.

Three dozen Marple Carnival pictures have been uploaded to a new album in the Virtual Tour this evening. Have already received some more from Ray Noble and these should be on-line in the morning. If anyone else has any more photos from the day please get in touch or email them through. Here a link to the new Carnival 2009 album: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=70

Looks like Sarah had a good day despite the weather:

Four images provided by Ray Noble have been added to the Tour this morning. On three of them Ray has worked particularly hard to put as many names to faces as he can and we really appreciate the effort that he puts in to keep us supplied with new and interesting material for the Tour. Thank you Ray!

Incidentally, so that you can see the fruits of Ray's efforts more clearly we've included larger than normal copies of the images with names and you can access these by clicking on the standard sized image.

Twenty-four images, mainly of the Lime Kilns and Strines Road area, have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning. The majority were taken by Jim Graves, who was Deputy Headmaster at Willows School during the 1960s/70s. Thank you to Jim and to Hilary Atkinson of Marple Local History Society for passing them on to us.

Incidentally, it hadn't occurred to me to mention before but if you click the "notify" button at the top or bottom of this topic (or any other topic) you should receive email notification that a new post has been added here, which usually means more pictures have been added to the Tour.
