The Virtual Time Tour of Marple

Getting lots of feedback on the Virtual Tour, which is brilliant - thank you.

A great pic from Ray Noble of wife Beryl and the rest of the very successful ladies darts team at the Sportman at Strines in around 1963 has been added to the tour this morning.

Also one of the most frequently viewed images on the tour - a map of the site of Marple Hall that helps to orientate yourself when looking at the photos - has been replaced with a version that shows more buildings to the west side (barn and stables area). It resolves some of the confusion that I had about certain of the photos, so thanks to Axel Thomas for that:

There's a lot of stuff similar to what everyone will have seem before but also some great new images too. I make no aplogies for including every variant of the classic shot of the hall, even though many of them are quite alike.

Several images provided by John Rishworth, a gentleman of 78 years who was born at Peace Farm, have been added to the Tour this evening, along with an image of Strines Railway sent in by Ray Noble. Unfortunately John was not prepared to part with his photos when he visited Marple Local History Society's archives so they had to be photocopied rather than scanned. The quality is therefore not as good as it might be but the content does make up for it. John's father, John Senior, served in All Saints' Choir for an amazing 71 years. Now that IS long service!

The last dozen images from Marple Local History Society's folders on churches have been uploaded to the Virtual Tour this morning. These include several poor photo-copies of some very battered images taken at Compstall Rose Queen Festival in 1909. The good thing is they have the details and date of what they were and despite their condition they make interesting viewing. With Ray's help I've also verified that the "mystery" pulpit image is in fact from the New All Saints' Church, so that has been uploaded too.

Again with Ray's assistance we have also established that the photo featuring chauffeur Edwin Whitfield was not taken outside Beamsmoor and that the house was demolished in 1980/81. Unfortunately no known photos of it in the public domain at present.

These, plus the images from the carnival, have helped take the number of photos on the Tour past the 4,000 milestone and the number of images viewed to more than 760,000. That first million is coming into range!
