Yesterday's task day was cancelled for all but the toughest of the Friends of the Park. To read more about these local heroes visit the Friends' web site:

http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2013.html

The next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 23 February and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 2 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Brrrr.... It was cold in the park today but we got lots done - most importantly the Diamond Jubilee Flowerbed was planted up for spring.

A big thank you to Marple Firefighters for coming along to help us too.

Friends of the Park were joined by Marple and District Allotment Association during our task day yesterday.

The Allotment Association have adopted the flowerbed that was previously maintained by the Rainbows, who decided to give it up this year. We are looking forward to seeing how the Allotment Association's plans to turn the bed into a mini vegetable plot develop over the coming months. We also installed a new display panel that explains the background and inspiration to our Diamond Jubilee Project outside the library. Read more here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/projects/diamond-jubilee.html

We are now switching to two Task Days per month for the spring/summer season as it was very successful last year, so the next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 13 April and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 2 pm.

The weather was kind for the Friends of the Park task day yesterday and lots was achieved with a good turnout of volunteers.

This included the start of a new project to refurbish the picnic benches at the Recreation Ground sponsored by Marple Area Committee.

We were subject to all kinds of weather yesterday but succeeded in planting our new "Rose Wall" hedge around the rear borders of the War Memorial Beds.

We've installed a temporary barrier around the borders to try and protect the roses while they get established. We hope this will encourage people to keep their dogs off the beds and stop walking across them too.

This is part of our plans to commemorate the approaching centenaries of WWI (1914-1918) in the park and we hope it will be well established by 2014.

Despite the rain yesterday volunteers weeded and added over 100 plants to the Sensory Garden, the Ornamental Beds, the War Memorial Beds and the Reading Circle behind the library.
