Celebrating 10 Years of improvements to Marple Memorial Park

A very productive day in the park yesterday with work on the flowerbeds, woodland area, Jubilee Bed, Sensory Bed, graffiti removal and installation of a second new picnic bench in the Infants Play Area for families to enjoy. We also welcomed Marple's Local Councillors to help us fly our new flag to commemorate 10 Years of volunteers working to improve the park.

And The Marple Plumber fitted us an outside tap free of charge!

Another big effort from a small number of volunteers today is helping to keep Marple Memorial Park in tip-top condition. Isn't it looking great now that it's coming into bloom!

Bob Wilson's last "working day" in Memorial Park

The weather was very kind on Park Keeper Bob Wilson's last official working day in the park. Bob has taken redundancy / early retirement as part of the council cuts. Bob has spent the last 9 years of his 40 years of employment with Stockport Council, and latterly Solutions SK, in Marple Memorial Park and he is one of the key reasons that it has been so well looked after.

Read more here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2014/211-task-day-29-march-2014.html

Thank you to Arthur Procter for recording Bob's presentation and the end of an era. As a result of the budget cuts there will no longer be a permanent Park Keeper in Memorial Park and nobody is likely to provide the dedication and care that Bob has given to looking after it over the last 9 years. The need for volunteers to help look after the park it is going to be greater than ever, so if you'd like to help the Friends of the Park rise to the challenges that face us please to come and join in!

The next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 12 April 2014 and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 2 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves and small hand tools if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Thank you for your comment Amazon! It's good to know that people notice  :)

We had the first task day of 2014 yesterday and also collected the first in the borough 2014-2018 WWI Small Grant of £200 for the Rose Wall Hedge that we planted around the war memorial beds last year.

Brilliant turnout by volunteers today, despite the weather. A good tidy-up of the flowebeds in preparation for the Remembrance Service on 10 November was the main task today.

We also had a formal presentation of our share of Marple in Action's surplus funds and we'd like to thank them very much for that, and everyone who voted for us too.

Pretty much perfect weather for working in the park yesterday with lot of tasks done by local volunteers once again. The main focus was on the Jubilee Bed in front of the library and transplanting of the Polyanthus to a variety of other locations within the park. Picnic benches and the last of the Boules Court benches were treated too.

Another busy day for Friends of the Park yesterday with lot of work done by local volunteers. The temporary barrier protecting the roses has now been removed and you can get a better idea of what the rose wall hedge should look like once it has matured.
