Title: Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal
Post by: admin on November 15, 2017, 06:42:14 AM
Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal

Marple Bridge Association Chairman Phil Cooke is a man on a mission who, since achieving the installation of life-saving defibrillators in Marple Bridge and Compstall, is now turning his attention to Marple Town Centre. Working with Marple Civic Society, Phil recently secured £1,000 of the £2,000 worth of funding needed for this from Marple Area Committee.

Marple Civic Society has also pledged £200 towards the up-front costs and undertaken to pay the £126 annual running costs for the defibrillator too. Local business GT Landscape and Construction Ltd has already pledged £100 towards the project and The Marple Website has pledged £50 and agreed to help with campaigning, so there is now only £650 needed to make Marple Town Centre a safer place.

Phil says: “The MBA put a public access defibrillator in the phone-box on Lower Fold last year after raising over £2,000 within the community. Earlier this year it was used on a gentleman who had a heart attack on the canal bank off Brabyns Brow, which just goes to show how essential defibrillators are to local communities like ours.”

If you are interested in making a large or small contribution towards this project, either as an individual, a community group or a local business, please get in touch via defibrillator@marple-uk.com.

A quick update to give people a little bit of information about GT Landscapes and Construction (http://www.gtlandscapesandconstruction.uk/) who are the first local business to contribute to the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal with a donation of £100.

They are a local landscaping and construction company who undertake garden landscaping, roofing and home extensions in the Marple, Stockport and Greater Manchester areas.

They are already Marple Website Sponsors, here's their banner:

We are delighted to advise that we have some amazing news on the Defibrillator Appeal!

Local lady Stephanie Lorusso (nee Shaw, of the Malcolm Shaw & Son Funeral Directors (http://www.malcolmshawandsonltd.co.uk/) family) has generously donated the balance of £650 that was needed to purchase a defibrillator for Marple Town Centre. Stephanie says that her mother (Sheila Shaw) had a Cardiac Arrest a couple of years back on 2nd January, which she fortunately survived. Sheila then had to have a triple heart bypass last year, which went well, and she is back dancing and living a very active life now at the age of 80 years next September.  When Stephanie saw the Defibrillator Appeal on-line she says she had to contact us and do something as she had been thinking about buying or contributing to a defibrillator in the town centre already and this was the perfect opportunity.

So, this means that the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator project can now go ahead, which is fantastic news!

As far as the Defibrillator Appeal is concerned, it has been decided to continue raising funds for the immediate future to try and cover at least some of the ongoing maintenance costs of £126 PA. Although Marple Civic Society has pledged to pay for this, and of course will do so, if we can raise some extra money towards it then the society will be able to conserve their funds and do other things to benefit Marple with them.

So, if you would still like to be involved with the project and wish to make a contribution towards the running costs of the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator, please get in touch via defibrillator@marple-uk.com

Do you know were it is going to be installed?

The plan is to put it close to the junction of Stockport Road and Hollins Lane. More details will be published when everything is confirmed.

We are now very pleased to announce support for the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal from Estate Agent Julian Wadden.

Julian Wadden already operate a scheme where 5% of commission on sales is donated to a fund that helps to purchase life-saving defibrillators for use in and around the local area. The seller is asked to choose who should receive the donation from the sale of their property, selecting from a list of pre-approved local beneficiaries.

JW has agreed to add the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal Maintenance to their list of approved beneficiaries that sellers can choose from, up to a maximum value of £630, which is equivalent to 5 years of maintenance at £126 PA. This is a fantastic offer for the Town Centre Defibrillator Appeal because contributions will boost Marple Civic Society's undertaking to pay for the maintenance and allow them to spend any funds they save on other important local projects.

The Appeal Team would like to thank Marple Area Committee, Marple Civic Society, GT Landscapes and Construction, The Marple Website, Stephanie Lorusso, Shop Local Club Card and Julian Wadden for their fantastic support of the Town Centre Defibrillator Project, which can now be installed as soon as a suitable location is finalised and agreed.

Not to take away from this specific scheme guys, but very shortly there will be a new Community Defib on the front of the fire station that will be accessible 24/7 via keypad lock box. Will this then mean that this defib will be a little close leaving less cover further up market street? Just wondering about best positioning?

Thanks for this info, it's good to have it now so that we can take it into account on the positioning.

I tried several of those and none of them list any in Marple. On one the nearest was 15 miles away. I only tried the 3 or 4 top scoring Apps and in their reviews the main criticism was that they don't have very good coverage yet.

An app can't just be created like that. It takes, planning, skills and time. This costs money or goodwill. Plus it needs to be updated regularly with any changes.

It's far better to get existing apps updated with recent information. Someone's already done all the hard work and it will take a few moments to add any local equipment to an app's database.

It's frustrating though, have tried GoodSam Alerter and that doesn't have any Marple Defibs listed. Maybe will do something on the new site just for Marple.

Have been advised by Marple Firefighters that their Defib is now active as of today. It's on the front of the Fire Station.

Also learned that there is one at Marple Golf Club (open hours only) and there is to be a public access one installed at Brabyns Preparatory School soon.

I will add these to the list we have at the bottom of the Defib Appeal page and then look at putting them on a map.

That's now here: http://www.marple.website/community-projects/town-centre-defibrillator-appeal.html (http://www.marple.website/community-projects/town-centre-defibrillator-appeal.html)

We will have to look again at the best location for the Town Centre one to ensure we get the best coverage possible from the available Defibs.

I wasn't having a dig.

The other thing to do is get the location of the equipment added to Google Maps. I just tried it and found the nearest one in Maps is in Romiley on the wall outside the Forum entrance. It shouldn't be too hard to get the Marple ones added.

Marple Town Centre Defibrillator News 25 April 2018

After protracted discussions with a variety of local businesses and landlords we are delighted to report that a location for the new Marple Town Centre Defibrillator has at last been agreed and it will shortly be installed on the front of the Regent Cinema.

It's been a lengthy process to find the most suitable location – much longer than it took to raise the money thanks to some very generous local people - but after considering potential sites between Rose Hill and Possett Bridge, and drawing lots of circles on maps, we've chosen the most prominent location that satisfied all the requirements.

We'd like to say a very big thank you to the owners of the Regent, who have been very positive and quick to support the project. We look forward to having a little celebration once the defibrillator is installed and commissioned to thank everyone who has supported the Appeal.

Other recent news is that the scheme operated by estate agent Julian Wadden enabling sellers to donate a proportion of the commission on the sale of their properties to the defibrillator's maintenance has provided its first contribution of £122. This will cover maintenance costs well into a second year.

You can read more via the link below about how the defibrillator project has been funded by donations from Marple Area Committee, Stephanie Lorusso (of Malcolm Shaw & Son), GT Landscapes and Construction, Marple Civic Society, the Marple Website, Shop Local Club Card and Julian Wadden.

The Marple Town Centre Defibrillator has now been installed. We'd like to send a big thank you to electrician Mike Beese of TBG INSPECTION SERVICES (http://www.tbginspection.co.uk/) (pictured below) for providing installation support to the Marple Town Centre Defibrillator Project.

The Defib is waiting for registration with the NW Ambulance Services before it can go into service (at which point the out-of-service sign will be removed). Once active a call to NWAS on 999 will get you the access codes if they agree that you need to use it.

Thanks Amazon, here are a few more details ...

Defibrillator Seminar Thursday 19 July 2018

Now that the 24 hour defibrillator has been installed in Marple Town Centre at the front of the Regent Cinema on Stockport Road, it is important that people know how to use it.

Training has been arranged with Community Heartbeat Trust so that people can learn how to use the defibrillator and find out how it works. Everyone is welcome to attend this free seminar and you don't need any special skills to attend.

There are 50 places available and everyone is welcome. The more people who know how to use the defibrillator the more chance we have of saving lives of those who have a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Do come along........

Details of the Seminar:
Marple Library - 19th July - 6.30pm (for approx one and a half hours)
Marple Memorial Park, Marple

Please confirm your attendance by email to: pmc@robertsandroberts.co.uk

I think this is such an important issue that people in Marple should be made more aware of this instruction rather than only the people who read this site. I think the people who should be given instruction in how to use the Defibrillator are the shopkeepers and other businesses who are likely to be in Marple for most of each day rather than Joe Bloggs who might be around Marple once or twice  a week, I say this because there are only 50 places available for instruction. Maybe there could be made more instruction dates available to us so that if more than 50 people know how to use it there is more chance of saving somebodies life.

The really important thing to understand is that actually training is not necessary (though useful) the defib will tell you what to do. Once taken out of box, press the start button and follow the instructions. (Even if trained, in emergency situation panic may set in, so it is all talked through for you) It will not work unless it has worked out it is needed, so no chance of shocking patient unless required.

If you need the defib, just use it trained or not

What John says is absolutely correct, the training is not essential to be able to use them as the defibrillators are so smart nowadays. Still an advantage though, as having done the training one will know what to expect and should therefore have more confidence.

This message is not only going out to people who use this site. It is correct that it would be best for shopkeepers and business owners and other people who are regularly in the town centre to receive the training and this is why a flyer will be dropped through the letter boxes of nearby businesses specifically inviting them to attend and posters will be displayed locally too. If there is a big demand then it may also be possible to arrange further training, this can be decided after the response to this session.

This flyer was hand-delivered with an explanation to 20 local shops and businesses closest to the Cinema Defibrillator yesterday afternoon.

It was also delivered to Library staff and more will be delivered in the Town Centre today.

If you run a business in Marple Centre then please consider attending this seminar, or sending one of your staff.

This can also apply to shops and businesses near to the Fire Station Defib or the one on the Police Station in the park.

Community Heartbeat Trust Seminar completed

Last Thursday thirty-five-plus members of the Marple Community attended a Defibrillator and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) seminar given by the Community Heartbeat Trust. This means that more people in Marple Town Centre now know how to use the new defibrillator recently installed on the Regent Cinema. All local shops and offices were invited to send a member of staff to the free seminar organised by local Defib Champion Phil Cooke and Marple Civic Society. The majority of the attendees either work or live just a short distance from the new defibrillator.

Marple Defibrillator News 16 March 2022

The defibrillator at Marple Cinema was recently deployed for the sixth time since it was installed. The one in the phone box on Lower Fold in Marple Bridge has been deployed three times whilst the one on the side of the Cafe / Warden Office in Compstall has been deployed twice.

Please be aware of where your nearest local Defibrillator is, as it can save lives!

The Marple Bridge Association (MBA) has led the project to improve coverage across our area and there are also 24 hour access defibrillators locally at the Windsor Castle and Northumberland Arms in Marple Bridge, the Hare and Hounds in Mill Brow plus the Police Station in Memorial Park and Marple Fire Station. A new defibrillator has recently been installed on the Pavilion in Brabyns Park and the MBA are currently helping put another 24 hour access one in the grounds of Marple Hall.

If you wish to support this project please donate via the MBA Website (https://www.marplebridge.co.uk/support-your-local-community-association/).

24 HOUR PUBLIC ACCESS
DURING PREMISES OPENING HOURS ONLY
Not all defibrillators are accessible 24 hours a day but you will be surprised how many there are in businesses, schools, doctors and dentists within the area. The list below is not definitive and not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but it gives you an idea on how many there are in our local community:

Possible it already has been moved.  A while ago there was a Facebook post where they were looking for a new home for some wooden chairs from the centre.  Doubt that was all that was taken from there once the decision was made to close the centre.
