Title: The Romper
Post by: sniperace on July 31, 2005, 09:31:53 AM
i went out to the romper last night ( 30 07 05 )
for me and my wifes 17th wedding anniversary with 4 other close friends.
there was a varied menu and the food was excellent ( i mean really excellent ) we will be going there again for sure.was a bit pricey but you got what you paid for  and i dont think i can eat for a couple of days now.(( i had a mixed grill )and sticky toffee pud )
he he ,well it was a special occassion. The meal area was nice an cosy, service was impecable and the food piping hot, overall the night out was excellent ( that was also down to our company).we then finished off the night in what we like to call our local pub the ring a bells where we laughed the rest of the night away.
a good night for all finishing off our anniversary perfectly. :D

If they have started using a rip-off 0871 number they won't get my business, that's for sure!   :alien:

Real Ale Update - my partner visited The Romper this evening and they have Bombardier and Spitfire on handpumps  :p

So the real ale fans can still enjoy a visit. Haven't tried the food yet.

Despite the 0871 phone number, I dropped by yesterday evening - walking the dog, you know  ;) - and the Romper seemed to be holding a re-opening bash, complete with marquee and Abba tribute band  :'(

It's been given a huge makeover, and the interior is now incongruously cool and contemporary.  It was a nice pint - Spitfire and Bombardier, as promised by Cyberman - but not cheap at £2.60.

I went to the romper last night and it was fabulous.  A warm and friendly welcome from the staff as we opened the door instantly generated a relaxed feeling amongst our party.  An expertly pulled pint and a choice from the concise yet thoughtful menu later and we tucked into some of the finest pub food I think I have ever tasted.  My companions all agreed heartily, between savoured mouthfulls!

A cheery 'goodbye' from the smiling staff as we headed to the door confirmed my belief that, although it may be in a remote location, this pub is well worth the effort.  The place almost urges you not to rush things, food, drinks, conversations...and perhaps most importantly there isn't the pervasive feeling that one is 'invading the locals clique', a problem encountered in many of the more parochial pubs of Marple.

We shall certainly be making a trip there again in the near future.

Myself, my Finacee and 2 children went for a meal to the Romper (Saturday 26/07/08) and I think we must have gone to the wrong pub looking at the quote above. Staff miserable, checking us every few minutes to see if we had finished the meal (felt like being rushed), one bar staff on, long queue, waiting ages for the dessert. The main meals and starters were advertised as spicey, I've had more spice in an ice cream (even my 10 year daughter was complaining that the food was not spicey). All in all not worth the visit at all, would not recommned it to anybody. Very few people eating although the outside was heaving with drinkers enjoying the sunshine, maybe they have eaten here before and just thought the beer is ok but not the food.
Have eaten at the Ring o' Bells and it beats the Romper all ways, we had spicey food at the Ringers and it was tasty, the Romper was not.

Yes, it's a nice spot for a pint on a sunny evening.  The beer is indeed good, though a tad pricy at £2.60 a pint.

Don't know about the food, but I wonder if Orangewhip writes for the Stockport Express  ;D

I'm afraid I don't write for the Stockport Express, whatever gave you that idea?  ::)  Perhaps I should send them some of my reviews... ;)

Back up in Marple over the weekend so I'm going to give the Ring o' Bells another chance.  Expect a full report next week folks.  I'm intrigued by this 'spicey' food the rover mentions in his post!

To get back to the "Romper" The chef at the Romper is also at the Duke of York in Romiley that also does Turkish, Med style food which is also very good and maybe a little cheaper.

Dropped by the Romper yesterday.  A nice pint of Black Sheep, although it's now £2.80.   :'(

However, there was a notice by the bar announcing that the pub would be closed on Friday 26 June for a private function.

This doesn't seem right to me.  I reckon there are two key features which define the Great British Pub:

It's perfectly normal for a pub to have a function room, or occasionally to close off one or two rooms for a private function, but a pub is called a pub because it is a public house - not a private one!

If you must know it is a wedding party! and if they are paying for it as well as the staff there wedges that is fine, people don't seem to be botherd when its the quiz nights or funtion nights! >:(
If you have a problem with it speek to emma the landlady

I think it makes sense to close it to the public if its a wedding party  of a large enough scale .

I know if I went up there for a drink, and probably couldnt get served for ages due to a wedding then I would be frustrated., and I think with the lay out of the Romper inside they have done the right thing .   I bet it will be just  lovely for a wedding party :)  and even more so if the sun is shining .  I hope they do well from it :)

I had my wedding reception at Almonds , most of my husbands family are from down south, so they came up for the friday and the saturday, and basicly the wedding party took over the place for the whole weekend , booked all the hotel rooms,  it was just brilliant ., and the service was first class,  food was brill,  and our wedding day was just fantastic there  ...

* sighs * ... such a shame its gone now :(  as there is deffo a lack of places to have  a party with accomodation on our doorstep  now

If you must know it is a wedding party!
Whether its a wedding, a bar-mitzvah or a hunt ball is neither here nor there.

people don't seem to be botherd when its the quiz nights or funtion nights!

No they aren't bothered, because anyone can go along and take part in a pub quiz or function (or not, as they wish).  But next Friday, there will almost certainly be a few people who aren't aware of the closure, and who pop up to the Romper for a Friday night drink and a bite to eat, only to be turned away.  And next time they'll think twice and go somewhere else.   Which is not good for business.   :( That's all.

Too true.  In terms of quality of food, efficient service and a warm welcome, there is nowhere that comes close to The Romper.

Mmm, I'll have to think about that!  I like the food in the Romper - the Meditterranean (spelling?) menu makes a nice change from what's on offer elsewhere.  But I reckon there are other pubs in the area where the food's at least  as good - and they don't charge £2.80 a pint for the beer!

We went up to the Romper for lunch yesterday and had a nice meal  :)

However, as always seems to be the case these days, it was the service which let them down.
They weren't busy, whilst we were there they only had 1 other table of 2 eating and 1 guy stood at the bar.  There was someone working on the bar and a waiter, even with 2 staff they couldn't look after us.

We sat for 20 minutes plus with no drinks, the kitchen closed and we weren't asked if would like a dessert and then we had to get up and go to the bar to pay because there was nobody around.  We could have walked out and no one would have noticed.  At no point whilst we were there, were we asked "if everything was alright".

What a shame........  ???

The Romper is now closed.  Whether the closure is temporary or permanent is not clear - my hunch is that it may have closed for good.   :(

Sad to hear this, but not that surprised. It is soooooo quiet in there, very often empty in fact. As far as I could tell it only had decent custom on a hot sunny day, and sadly those are pretty rare around here!!

Although having said that they were advertising vacancies only last month, and tweeted an exciteable tweet only 4 days ago... although that was for offers on most drinks, so in hindsight was probably a stock clearance!

Our lady who runs the FoMMP tombola called in there last week to collect the prize they had said they would donate and they declined to hand it over, saying that the pub was being taken over by a different brewery. They did say which brewery and she thinks it may have been Lee's but we're not sure of that. It will be interesting to see if this proves to be correct.

At the moment it is owned by Enterprise Inns, one of the huge so-called 'pubcos'.  If it's being taken over by a brewery that's probably good news.  As Dizzy Penguin says, it's been looking pretty run down recently.

I emailed Enterprise Inn's asking what was occurring, reply below.

"As part of our ongoing business, we do from time to time identify a pub that we feel no longer has a long-term future in our estate.  After careful consideration, the decision was taken to sell the Romper Inn freehold.  The property is on the open market with no restrictions on future use and the benefit of its premises licence through Colliers (0161 831 3300), inviting offers in excess of £300,000 ex. VAT."

Whether it ends up as another pub/restaurant, or is converted to residential use, whoever buys it will have to spend a whole lot more than 300K.   I suspect we may be saying farewell to it as a pub, although it could probably do well if it had a thorough makeover and a really good chef was installed.  After all, it's a nice spot, and as they say - location, location, location.

It will only work as a pub/restaurant if they do something different, when we first went there it had an interesting menu.   Then they went with a more standard menu, so we never went back again.
Nothing wrong with their new menu, just trying too hard to please everyone, so no point going out of our way to go there.

It's exactly 2 miles South of Marple Town Centre.

The rates look horrible, that has to be a good month's contribution.
