Marple Skatepark Fund-raising target of £100,000 Reached!

This time last year I reported that Friends of the Park needed to raise another £22,394 to reach our funding target of £100,000 for the Skatepark Project.

I'm delighted to announce that this was achieved on Tuesday 20 December 2016, when we received a fabulous donation of £1,185 from Marple and Goyt Valley Rotary Club during their final ever meeting at the Royal Hotel in Hayfield. The project has received brilliant support from Marple and Goyt Valley Rotary over the last four years in return for the help we gave the club with their Christmas Collections in the Co-Op / Asda. This year Friends of the Park took over the collection completely and Asda customers generously donated a total of £1,876 during three days of collecting in the store last week.

Raising more than £24,000 in a year (including other projects) is a record for Friends of the Park, by a considerable margin, and means we've now raised a total of £50,000 for the skatepark within the local community that will be matched £ for £ by Stockport Council. There will be full details on the Friends of the Park web site but here are the highlights of this year's fund-raising successes:

£2,500 CDL Fund Grant Award via Forever Manchester.
    £1,876 ASDA Christmas Collections 2016
£1,684 Local Events Carnival, Food and Drink, etc.
£1,500 Marple Area Committee Flexibility Fund Award (2016).
£1,200 Friends of Park Refurbishment of Town Centre benches.
£1,185 Marple & Goyt Valley Rotary
£1,120 SkateFest Music night at Hawk Green CC.
£1,003 #GiveMe5 + miscellaneous donations via Local Giving.
    £1,000 Stockport Homes Grant.
    £1,000 The Marple Website.
£992 Grow Your Tenner 2016 - matched donations via Local Giving.
£988 Grow Your Tenner 2015 - matched donations via Local Giving.
      £941 Julian Wadden Treasure Hunt.
£901 Christmas Collections with Rotary 2015.
£856 Art Auction of donated paintings photos and books.
£600 Raised by Marple Hall School.
£500 Rotary Club of Stockport donations.
£420 Hatters and All Things Nice (2015).
£400 Local MP William Wragg's Charity of the Month.
      £250 Tuesday Bridge Group donations.
£250 ASDA Chosen by You Community voting scheme in store.
      £240 Marple Soup Community donations.
£224 KC Dowling commission on book sales.
      £195 Miscellaneous small donations.
£158 Ring o' Bells Quiz Nights.
      £150 Marple Carnival donation.
      £100 Marple Bands donation.
      £100 Nitrotek Business donation.
£100 Nationwide Community voting scheme in branch.
£132 Oldknow Bar donation and collection.
      £100 Personal donation
£59 Easy Fundraising commission on Internet sales.
£50 Romiley and Marple Lions donation.

In anticipation of reaching the target this year we've met with the nominated contractor Canvas Spaces and the Council several times since August. There have been some issues with the impact of inflation on the 2014 tender prices and we have had to remove some scope and tweak the design to keep the project within our budget. We recently agreed a revised design that addresses this and have also agreed that Friends of the Park and the council will do some of the landscaping works.

The next key step is for the council to place an order with Canvas so that materials can be ordered and construction can begin. We are currently waiting for a final documentation package from Canvas before the order process can be concluded and should have more news of that early in the New Year.

There are some new issues that we'd like to address with the skatepark that are not covered by the current project, for example the old tarmac surface has recently developed pot holes in places around the existing ramps. We would like to find a long term solution to this if possible, and also find ways to improve the top section of the existing skatepark and the basketball area. So for the immediate future we will continue fund-raising in the hope that we can find a way to tackle these issues too.

Finally for now, on behalf of Friends of the Park and the Skatepark Team, I'd like to say a very big thank you to all the local people, local organisations, local businesses, local schools, local councillors and the council themselves, for supporting our efforts since we started this project 5 years ago, and having enough faith that we could do it to give us your money. We've had no grants from national organisations such as the Lottery or Sport England and ALL THE MONEY for this project has been raised at a local level.

It's quite an amazing achievement really, so well done Marple - we've done it for ourselves!

Amazing news, Mark & the FoMP! I haven't skateboarded since 1979 but perhaps I'll give it a go on the new park!

Whilst there is matched funding in there, this is a massive, massive achievement - thanks to Mark and his team and all the volunteers and contributors towards this useful, practical scheme.  Proof that persistence and organisation pays off.

I'm delighted to announce that Canvas Spaces Ltd will mobilise on Wednesday 1st February to start construction of the extension to Marple Skatepark.

You probably won't see very much happen on Wednesday to be honest as they will be travelling from Bristol but the construction phase will be officially underway.

We've been waiting most of the month to make this announcement but the council's order placement process has chugged very slowly and we've had to wait for confirmation that we can tell everyone. Well now we can give you the exciting news at last!

The programme is for a 10 week build, so if all goes well we should be finished for Easter but it will be very tight. There are also some extra works we'd like to do - more about that later.

Although there is nothing to see on site just yet, Canvas has given us some photos of the Ride-able Poppy Feature, which is already in fabrication.

The project is funded by £50,000 raised within the community via small grants, donations and fund-raising activities and this is matched £ for £ by Stockport Council. Friends of the Park have had fantastic support from local people, local organisations, local shops and businesses and local schools. We will be doing our best to make sure that everyone who has helped along the way is kept informed of what is happening and we take this opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to them all!

I spotted this on my travels - it is a public bike repair stand. It could be a useful addition to the park in general and the skate park in particular. I don't know how much they cost but this one was by the fire station in Bolton.

There is a discussion on The Cycle UK forum about bike repair hubs.  Within the discussion there is a link to a company who make them. Could be worth a look! Gives a starting price of just over £700.

Good job the H & S people wern't about yesterday morning or they would have been closed down and fined. I walked along the canal past the park about 10ish and they had the excavator digging away with no safety fencing erected, anybody or dogs could easily have wandered onto the site. Didn't take any photos though, not having a pop but just stating a fact.

Very disappointed to find that someone has knocked down the safety fencing around the skatepark today or Saturday, presumably so that they could have a closer look. This is not going to help us get the skatepark built and if any damage is done it will cause delays to the project. We know that Alexandra Park in Edgeley has had major difficulties of this nature and hope it's not going to happen at Marple too. If you have any information or spot anyone accessing the skatepark while the contractor is not there please call the police (101) and let us know.

Put anything negative about this project and watch your post disappear.
I stated weeks ago that this project will lead to vandalism and anti social behaviour.

Your latest post and @alex's response to it have been moved to the thread where the earlier post that you refer to was moved and answered weeks ago:

http://www.marple-uk.com/smf/index.php?topic=7193.0 (http://www.marple-uk.com/smf/index.php?topic=7193.0)

You are welcome to continue discussing it there :)

Extra Funding for Marple Skatepark!

Before Christmas the Skatepark Team and the Council became concerned about the condition of the old tarmac on the lower level of the existing skatepark. In recent months it had started to break-up in places and we were worried that it would deteriorate quickly once the new skatepark was built and it was receiving even more visitors than before. We spoke to the contractor about concreting this section during the current construction phase and learned that it would cost just under £12,000 more.

This level of extra fund-raising was beyond our means at such short-notice but we were delighted that when we told Life Leisure Stockport about it they came to our aid with a community funding award for the extra money we needed.  The extra funding is a fantastic boost to the project as it means the lower section of the skatepark will be fully integrated with the new extended area and it will alleviate potentially difficult maintenance problems that were likely to arise in the future.

We would like to thank Life Leisure for stepping in at such short notice and recognising the project's importance to the local community. We're also pleased to report that this extra work is now under-way.

Good to see the skate park coming along and that people can't wait to use it but sure it must be a bit dodgy having people skating on a building site and unfinished features.

This is Sunday afternoon. I did challenge them but they didn't see the harm. I'm sure their parents would sue quick enough if one of them hurt themselves in it. Perhaps more secure fencing is in order.

It is a shame that they can't wait. The contractor tells me they've been breaking in for around a week now. He repairs the fence and overnight they break it again. Obviously this can't be condoned and I hope nobody gets hurt and no damage is done. I understand this was so bad at the recently opened new skatepark at Alexandra Park in Edgeley that their opening date was put back due to the extent of damage. I'm also told it's common with new skateparks once they reach this stage and the sooner we get it open properly the happier everyone will be. If all goes to plan it will be open for use before next weekend.

Don't know for sure yet, it will depend on the contract for the works placed by the council but I expect they will have to deal with it.

I am delighted to announce that Marple Skatepark is now open to the public. Enjoy it safely, respect the effort that has gone into achieving this - it's the community of Marple that has made it happen by supporting us for the last 5 years! There's always more to do of course but primary mission accomplished!

We will be thanking everyone in more detail in due course but for now, thanks to Stockport Council for working with us all the way and for £50k of funding, thanks to Life Leisure for coming to our aid with nearly £12k to enable us to concrete the existing lower section, thanks to Friends of Marple Memorial Park volunteers for a huge fund-raising effort, to Stockport Homes, Marple Area Committee, The Marple Website and Forever Manchester for great funding support and to all the local people, local organisations, local councillors and businesses who have donated, fund-raised and had enough faith that we could do this to give us you money and your support.

It will be a while before our grandchild will be able to use it - but thankyou Marple!

Starting tomorrow a contractor will be breeze-blocking up and skimming the rear of the old quarter pipe. The work should take 2 to 3 days and the ramp will be out of action for that period of time.

Once the work is completed Friends of the Park will paint and stencil it to match the new ramps and it should all blend in nicely.

Please be patient as this work is done and don't interfere with any barriers that are put in place for safety while we continue to improve Marple Skatepark!

Will/has all the soil surrounding the site been seeded to return grass to the edge of the skatepark? We don't want it turning into a big bed of weeds over the summer.

This will be landscaped and seeded with grass by the council with help from Friends of the Park. We're waiting for the council to tell us when they're ready to bring the soil to site (I am nagging often). Also over extra bins.

It is explained elsewhere but both the landscaping works and the blocking up of the old ramp were originally in the skatepark contractor's scope but we had to find ways to save money after costs increased over the time it took us to raise the funds we needed. Taking over these items was one way to save a bit of money and get more skatepark!

The back of the old quarter-pipe is now blocked up and we're waiting for it to be skimmed before we can paint. The three old benches have had their final coat of gloss and now have to be stencilled before they can be installed. And the new double-bin has been delivered to the park and is waiting for the council's contractor to fit. Making good progress!

It's dark grey but I think the photo is giving it a bit of a blue cast. I've just finished stencilling the first one, see below. I think this is more accurate on the colour:

Is there a minimum age recommended for the skate park? There seems to be a lot of very young children standing/playing on it when the older ones are flying around. Due to the nature of the sport if someone comes off it will be fast and I would hate to see an accident.

I don't believe the council notices at the park include any age restrictions but I have seen other guidance that suggests children up to the age of 10 should be supervised by parents. Personally I think that's a good idea and my own grandchildren who are under 10 and use the park regularly are always supervised.

The council notice does advise all users to wear helmet + knee and elbow pads but many choose not to.

RoSPA is the authority that inspects and approves skateparks for use and their web site gives some interesting insights and says that there will be accidents:

Thanks for your reply Admin.
My children are always padded up with helmets as well.

Unfortunately my 16 yr old doesn't like using it as too many little ones are in the way and stops him using it properly.

Where as the younger one is still learning and enjoys it.

I know it's hard to police but it seems a shame if the older ones can't use it for what it was built for. On the other hand it seems cruel to stop the little ones.

Don't know what the solution is but I originally thought it was meant for 'teens' as the younger ones have the other two parks already?

I know that some have found the best solution is to go there in quieter times - usually earlier and later in the day. This is not always practical but there is an over 40s group that have started using it at 8am on Sunday mornings for example!

In the longer term, we are looking into the possibility of doing more work on the top section that may include an area specifically for beginners called a pump track. In busy times we'd hope that this would draw the smaller ones away from the main skatepark.

Another option could be for the users to have a friendly dialogue with parents of the little ones asking them to keep them to certain area of the park. I realise this can be tricky as people can take offence but often if parents do understand that by zooming all over the skatepark in a random manner their children are stopping other people from using it then I'd hope that they would be receptive to a compromise. I do realise that this could be a tough thing to ask of a 16 year old though.

Look out for more details soon about our ideas for improvements to the top section of the skatepark and the basketball court.

My four year old son loves going on it with his scooter when it's quiet.  He adores going on it, and would go on it whenever he could.

Have to say the larger users are generally very good when there's smaller children on there, although obviously we keep him off it when it's busy.  But tomorrows skaters have to start somewhere so a beginners area sounds like a great idea.

Someone had damaged the screed by digging their name into it over the weekend, so we filled and repaired that too. We hope that park users will respect the efforts we've made to improve the skatepark and just enjoy using it over the Bank Holiday weekend!

A council contractor is expected to start the resurfacing works to the main pathway into the park between the main entrance and the war memorial today.

The work should be completed this week.

Of course the contractor was working to council time and hasn't started yet after telling us on Friday that they would! Latest promise (yesterday) is that the work starts today.

Today we have mostly been painting and stencilling the old skatepark ramps to match the new part (and the seating installed yesterday).

We wanted to get this done before Team Extreme Event at Marple Carnival. Hope you like it?

Come along to the Team Extreme Event at Marple Carnival today and check out our ideas for the top section of the skatepark and the basketball court, which we'd like to turn into a MUGA (multi-user games) facility.

We're going to need around £75k to do this though and of course we haven't got any of that yet!

It's been pretty quiet from Marple Skatepark Development Project for a while. We hope everyone's been enjoying the new skatepark while we've been beavering away with the council and Canvas Spaces behind the scenes. We are now pleased to be able to advise that (at last) a planning application for Marple Skatepark Phase 2 was submitted for approval yesterday. Once the plans are on the Planning Portal we'll provide a link.

The scheme is the one we displayed at the Carnival in the summer and features improvements to the small top section of the skatepark plus resurfacing of the basketball court, turning it into a Multi-User-GAmes facility (MUGA).

It is important to understand that we don't have the money for this yet. We will need around £75k to make it happen. But the planning application is the first essential step on the way to being able to make further progress.

We'll give you more news when we have it. In the meantime, we encourage users to keep enjoying the new skatepark, treat it well and respect all users and other visitors to the park.

AT LAST! Planning permission for Marple Skatepark Phase II has been granted!

The planning application submitted in December last year was finally granted by Stockport Council yesterday. The plans are for improvements to the small top section of the existing skatepark and the transition to the lower section; plus resurfacing of the existing basketball court and additional fencing, turning the court into a modern Multi-User-GAmes facility (MUGA).

The process has taken a long time because comments objecting to the plans submitted in December were received. Of these comments, the planners decided that one in particular needed to be addressed. This was that “there would be no hard-standing access to the new sports area (existing basketball court)” once the improvements were completed.

This has taken considerable time to reach a satisfactory conclusion, as the only way to provide this without restarting the planning process from scratch was to create a new footpath within the footprint covered by the existing planning application. This forced us down the route of adding a footpath along the top edge of the skatepark area (the strip shaded a peachy colour in the 3D visual).

Unfortunately, RoSPA regulations for skateparks stipulate that you cannot have a footpath closer than 2 metres from a skatepark obstacle or feature. This meant that we effectively lost a 3 metre usable strip in total from the top section of the skatepark. The loss of this space meant that we had to make significant changes to what we had originally hoped to do with the top section design, as you will see if you compare the approved plans with what was originally submitted.

But, we are where we are, and at last it's approved and we can move forward.

The next stage is to firm up the costs for the whole of Phase II. Discussions are ongoing with the skatepark contractor to confirm their costs for the skatepark element and to satisfy the council's procedures for a single tender action. The MUGA element of the works is expected to go out on competitive tender before Christmas and once we have both prices finalised we will know how much money we need to undertake the full works planned.

The really good news is that £85,000 of Formal Sports Commuted Sums has been approved by the council for this scheme. We won't know for a while if this is quite enough to do the whole project but if not, it will certainly be a very significant proportion of it. Obviously once we know, and if there is a shortfall, we will look for ways to raise any extra money that is needed.

It may interest Marple people to know that the formal sports commuted sums have come from the Morris Homes development on Hibbert Lane.

No, this is not necessary according to RoSPA regulations. The regulations require a 2m distance between a path and the nearest obstacle. We are complying with this.

But many people will never feal safe using the path without a fence to protect them from the fast-moving children on dangerous bikes etc equipment.

these would be people using the path to go and play basketball on the court, yes? and you think such people will be frightened by bikes? Do you ever walk along the pavement, next to the road used by articulated lorries and cars which are FAR more likely to kill or injure you than a bike?

Then they can access the court across the grass, which is what most people will do anyway.

News on Marple Skatepark Phase II:

We have been waiting for some considerable time to get a confirmed start date from the Council's Greenspace Team and the contractor Canvas Spaces who upgraded the skatepark for us in 2017 and will carry out the Phase II skatepark works (not the MUGA - that will be done by a different contractor after the skatepark works are completed).

The options most recently being considered were to start immediately after the Carnival and complete by the end of July, or, if that was not possible, to wait until after the school summer holidays. We were advised earlier this week that the start has now been revised to after the school holidays. A pre-construction meeting is to be arranged for August, after which we should be able to tell you more.

It is frustrating how long this is all taking but please bare with us - it should be worth it in the long run. In the meantime, we hope users enjoy the skatepark over the summer and stay safe!

The skatepark is great. I’ve noticed though that at busy times the path next to it is becoming blocked not just by parents and kids watching but various scooters/bikes dumped along it. I’ve been having to cycle this way to avoid the canal works and sometimes it’s impossible to even walk by - and of course I’m the one who gets glared at for daring to exist. I wonder if any thought could be given to a kind of viewing or seating area to overlook the skatepark, freeing up the very useful path which is now far too narrow. Similar to the benches facing the bowling green I suppose.

In Torkington Park Hazel Grove they’ve also got a good idea where there’s a second “bikes only” path which veers out away from a kids play area, diverting people on bikes away from stationary parents and kids (the park also has a proper marked cycle route across it which works very well). As the skatepark gets busier and busier something like this will be necessary so everyone can still enjoy the park without conflicting.

At last we have some skatepark news...

Phase II:
We listened to comments from users on the design for the top section refurbishment and decided to do something about them. Unfortunately this turned into a bigger job than we expected and we did some rework on the layout over the summer. We now have a final design that was submitted to the planners at the end of August as a minor amendment to the scheme granted in October 2018. After a longer than expected wait it was approved last week.

Here are some 3D images of that final design.

https://www.facebook.com/marpleskatepark/videos/2170267849933041/ (https://www.facebook.com/marpleskatepark/videos/2170267849933041/)

We now have to finalise details with the skatepark contractor and agree a programme of work. When we have a firm start date we will let you know.

ASB at the Skatepark:
Not such good news is that a resident felt it necessary to contact the Council, Friends of the Park and MP William Wragg about anti-social behaviour at the skatepark over the summer. This arrived just after the August bank holiday weekend, when problems included a shopping trolley being set on fire in the park. The resident's concerns included mess, vandalism and noise at the skatepark and the matter was also raised as a public question at Marple Area Committee on Wednesday 25 September 2019.

A meeting was convened between Local Councillors, Council Officers and Friends of the Park on 30 September, when a number of actions were discussed and agreed.

Those actions include:

An existing CCTV camera will be relocated so that it covers the skatepark and sports area (this was recommended by Friends of the Park in December 2017 but progress has been slow. It is now being treated more urgently). Signs will also be fitted at the skate area/sports area notifying users that the area is under CCTV surveillance.

Stockport Council is working closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Team to monitor anti-social behaviour in the park and the wider Marple area. The policing team are aware of the increased reports of ASB in and around the skatepark and will increase patrols and surveillance as their resources allow.

Local councillors have carried out a programme of engagement with students at Marple Hall School to talk with them about responsibilities within the community. The feedback from councillors is that they were very well received by students and teachers at the school because they focused on how things can be made better for everyone rather than seeking to apportion blame. One quick outcome was Friends of the Park had skatepark users volunteer to help pick up litter during their last task day.

It has been agreed that additional trees will be planted as part of phase II to increase the screening of the skatepark along the canal-side boundary of the park too.

Other skateparks across the region and the country have been successful, like ours, in providing much needed activity for young people who otherwise have little to do. It's also a valuable source of outdoor exercise, may lead people into it as a sport and is a great social thing for youngsters and parents alike. Sadly skateparks in some areas have met so much opposition from residents they have been dismantled. This would be tragic for Marple ... let's all do our best to ensure there's no call for that here!

Marple Skatepark Phase II start on site less than a month away!

Once again things have taken far longer than we'd hoped and expected but following a pre-start meeting with Canvas Spaces yesterday, we are now in a position to announce that Marple Skatepark Phase II construction will begin early next month.

Canvas will commence in April with a track being laid across the park for heavy traffic and access to their compound, which will be on the basketball court like it was during phase I. The track will cause some obstruction to park users but is essential to protect tarmac and grass from damage by heavy machinery. The basketball court and the old top section of the skatepark, plus the bank transitioning down, will be cordoned off with safety barriers during the works. Most of the lower section of the skatepark will remain open, so although work will be ongoing during the Easter school holidays, users will still be able to skate most of the lower level while the top section is being rebuilt.

After the top section of the skatepark is completed and Canvas have left site, a new contractor will follow-on with the works to resurface the basketball court, add fences and other new features to turn it into a modern MUGA (Multi-User GAmes) Facility.

The target is for all facilities to be reopened and the access track removed in good time for Marple Carnival on Saturday 20 June. Of course it will take longer for the grassed areas under the track to recover and for the flowerbed on the access route to be reinstated.

Please support Friends of the Park, Stockport Council and their contractors as we seek to complete the final stages of this long-term project begun in 2011 to create an outstanding new facility for the young people of Marple.

Marple Skatepark Phase II on hold

We thought we'd overcome all the hurdles in the way of constructing Marple Skatepark Phase II but following the PM's announcement on Monday we can confirm that the construction start scheduled for 6 April is now on hold.

Marple Skatepark Phase II to start on site next week!

Friends of Memorial Park are delighted to announce that following this week's easing of Covid-19 restrictions, and after careful consideration by Stockport Council and contractor Canvas Spaces, Marple Skatepark Phase II construction works will commence early next week and last for approximately 6 weeks.

Refurbishment of the top section of the skatepark can go ahead now that plans and procedures for the delivery of the works have been revised to ensure measures are in place to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid-19.

As explained before our start in April was put on hold, activity will commence with a track being laid across the park for heavy traffic and access to the works compound, which will be on the basketball court like it was during phase I. The track will cause some obstruction to park users but is essential to protect tarmac and grass from damage by heavy machinery.

Under the current circumstances and restrictions the whole of the skatepark will remain closed.

At present exact timing of the follow-on works to refurbish the basketball court and turn it into a Multi-User-GAmes Facility is uncertain, primarily due to issues around material supply.

We will make further announcements whenever we have firm information to share with you.

Latest news and updates on Marple Skatepark Phase II.....

Below are a few photos of recent progress on the skatepark top section refurbishment.

We can also now give you a bit of an update on how the project is expected to continue over the next few weeks.

It has been confirmed that the fencing materials we need to complete the conversion of the basketball court to a MUGA have been delayed due to Covid19 and are on a 12 week delivery, which takes them out to around September 2020.

It has therefore been decided to proceed with the preparation and resurfacing works as far as possible now and then the contractor will return to install the fencing when it is available and then finish off by marking out the playing courts.

So, barring any unforeseen problems, we expect the skatepark top section to be completed some time next week and the basketball court refurbishment to commence straight away.

The skatepark will remain fenced off and closed until the basketball resurfacing works are completed too. We expect this to be towards the end of June.

Please note that reopening of the whole facility will be a council decision and will also depend on the Covid19 situation at the time as well as the completion of the works.

As usual, keep an eye on this page for the latest news, which we will share as and when we have something new.

Good to see progress on this, Mark. I doubt there's much that can be done about it, but when walking the dog in the evening, I regularly see skaters on the lower park. I'm assuming that they have just pushed the fencing aside. Are they likely to cause any problems for the new section?

Sadly they never seem able to wait Howard. As usual it only takes one or two then the rest flood in. Speaking to the constructors this time and last time, they say it's a universal problem. Knowing this they have to construction things in a sequence (usually ramps first then selected slabs in-between) to reduce the ability for the park to be used easily until towards the end of the build. They also try to leave the works at the end of the day in a condition that is not likely to lead to it being damage overnight or over-weekend. Probably more likely is someone injuring themselves on a sticking out reinforcement rod or similar.

Despite the futility of it, I've reported to the council that the fencing has been breached and I presume they will do something about it.

Marple Skatepark is Reopening

We're pleased to advise that the Phase II upgrade to Marple Skatepark has been approved by RoSPA and they are happy for the skatepark to reopen, as are the council.

The herras fencing should be coming down today, possibly even as you read this.

As we've mentioned before, although the former basketball area area has been resurfaced there is a long wait for the sports fencing that we need to complete the conversion to a MUGA. This is expected in September, so the area will remain as it is until then.

Other works still to do include the fitting of railings to the back of the new ramp on the top section, and repainting of the vertical surfaces throughout the whole skatepark. We expect these things to happen during week commencing 29 June.

We hope users enjoy what we've achieved and we're sorry that we can't have a formal relaunch at the present time.

Please use the facilities safely and considerately and put your litter in the bins provided or take it home.

It is great to see his heading to completion, but what needs consideration now is how will the skate-boarders and BMX cycle riders get there safely?

There is Cycling UK Web site  https://www.cyclinguk.org/covid-19-safe-space-social-distancing#WMP (https://www.cyclinguk.org/covid-19-safe-space-social-distancing#WMP)  that aims to try to persuade Local Councils ro make cycling and walking safer, primarily to cater for the current "social distancing" proposals, however it is an opportunity to point out all the problem areas there are for getting around Marple if you don't use a car..

So if you think the Skatepark Users may have a problem getting there then please use the facility and let the Council know.

I'm sure some do, but not all. Equally, many are dropped off by parents in cars, but neither of these are valid reasons to oppose safer cycling routes

Perhaps parent drop their kids off as they're worried about how safe their children are when cycling  to and from the skatepark. Perhaps those who get the bus do so for the same reason, and they'd prefer to ride. Safe cycling routes would enable this.

Final Stage of Marple Skatepark Phase II approaching

The long-awaited fencing materials for the completion of the upgrade of the basketball court in Marple Memorial Park to create a Multi-User Games facility have finally been delivered.

The sports area materials were delayed by a factory closure caused by the Covid19 pandemic but they are here at last and work is expected to start next week commencing 19th October and be completed by the end of that week.

This final stage of Marple Skatepark Phase 2 will include construction of 5-a-side goals, new basketball hoops and marking out of the playing courts. There will be a spectator fence along the top side of the court too.

Once everything is finished Friends of the Park plan to assess the dynamics of the whole area with the council and talk to them about re-siting litter bins.
