Title: fame! I want to live in Marple...
Post by: orangewhip on December 02, 2004, 08:39:24 AM
have any famous people ever lived or emerged from Marple?
I think Timmy Mallet of Wacaday fame once resided in the posh leafy streets off Winnington Road, and I've seen that fellow who plays Les in Coronation Street around and about, but are there any others...

I believe that Anthony 'Mr Manchester' Wilson was brought up in Marple and went to St Mary's Primary School in Marple Bridge.  I also recall reading somewhere that Bill Grundy ended his days here.   Which, since both Messrs Wilson and Grundy had their links to John Lyson et al, would give Marple a rather surreal place in the annals of punk rock...  Pursuing the Tony Wilson link, trivia buffs may be interested to know that Marple gets a passing mention from Steve Coogan (playing Wilson) in the film 'Twenty Four Hour Party People' and that the TV series 'The Day Today' featured Alan Partridge (also Coogan) reporting on 'Racing from Marple'.   Well, you did ask... ;)

Regards

Mike

My sister did the titles for 24-hour party people - those jumpy green ones. She lived in Marple until recently. Does that count?

Also, I think Malcolm Alison, ontime manager of Man City lived here, I remember a crowd of kids gathering outside his house and taunting him when City were beaten by Halifax Town in the FA cup.

I think this is certainly a classy bunch of celebs we're uncovering here.  Astute readers will have spotted that John Lyson, mentioned in my previous posting, was of course the well known typing error and former lead singer with the Six Pastels.  :D

Cheers

Occurs to me that none of them can be that famous if they either need an explanation after their name so we know who they are - or people can't even remember their names in the first place!  Fleeting and fickle  ;D

My father lived in Stiles Ave Marple, for about 25 years till his death in June 1997 we go back and see my stepmother who is still there. I am not sure but you mite have heard of him is name was John Thaw Snr and was the father of John Thaw (aka) Inspector Morse and I am John Thaw's brother.

I have very fond memories of Marple, the walk's the pubs the shops and of course the people.

And his more recent relation, Christopher Isherwood (Writer - "Goodbye to Berlin", "Mr Norris Changes Trains", etc.,) was born at Wybersley (or Wyberslegh, if you prefer) Hall at High Lane. Ok, so not quite Marple but then neither is Mellor.

If you don't know his writing, you must have seen "Cabaret", with Liza Minelli and Joel Grey, which is based on his material.

He was dug up and hanged along with Cromwell etc .  Locals call him that because he was hanged not because he hung people !! Sorry I did not explain myself  :-\

I was born in Marple 72 years ago and never moved away so I class myself as a local. In the last few days I have asked many people older than me all locals and they have never known him to be called the hanging judge Ray.

Hi Ray I can only tell you what we were told at school.  I have been racking my brains to remember the poem we were expected to recite at school   It was something about Judge Bradshaw with his decaying body hanging high with Oliver Cromwell and another chap who I have forgotten the name of.  I will ask my school friends if they remember and post it for all to read  :-\

There is some historical confusion here. The so-called "Hanging Judge" was Judge Jeffries, appointed by James II to preside over the "Bloody Assizes" dealing with the rebels and their supporters after the 1685 Monmouth rebellion.

Judge Bradshaw was indeed exhumed, displayed on the gallows at Tyburn for a day then beheaded in 1661 after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, although there is some doubt that it really was Bradshaw's body.

"Another chap who I have forgotten the name of" was Henry Ireton, Cromwell's son-in-law.

Yes that's the chap !!   Its all coming back to me now!  I also remember the poem also made reference to Charles 1 putting on extra clothing because it was an extremely cold day and he did not want his subjects to mistake his shivering for fear.   :o What a brave man ! My subjects may of thought it was raining  :o
