Marple Civic Society Speaker Meeting Programme 2014

The following meetings are open to the public and are free of charge.
Just come along. Better still, bring your family, friends and neighbours.
All meetings are held in Marple Library’s upstairs meeting room.

25th March 2014 - Civic Voice, the Work of the National Civic Movement
Speaker: Freddie Gick, Chairman of Trustees, Civic Voice
Refreshments served 3.40pm. Speaker Meeting 4.00pm - 5.00pm

Civic Voice is the national charity for the civic movement in England. It has a voice at government level and lobbies hard to represent the views and issues important to local civic societies. Following a three year review and reorganisation, Freddie is now the new ‘hands on’ Chairman of Trustees for Civic Voice. Come along to find out more about the national civic movement and let Freddie know what is important to us here in Marple.

27th May 2014 - The Long-term Future of Bugsworth Basin
Speaker: Ian Edgar, Chairman of Inland Waterways Protection Society (IWPS)
Refreshments served 3.40pm. Speaker Meeting 4.00pm - 5.00pm

The IWPS has faced many challenges since it was set up by volunteers in 1958 amid fears of closure of the canal network. Since 1968 the main aim of the IWPS has been the restoration and operation of Bugsworth Basin. The current challenge is to secure the long-term future of Bugsworth Basin; a challenge facing many volunteer organisations when projects are completed. A thought provoking topic from an experienced and inspiring leading volunteer.

29th July 2014 - How Can We Make the Planning System Work for Marple?
Speaker: Richard Wood. Planning Policy Manager, Stockport MBC
Refreshments served 3.40pm. Speaker Meeting 4.00pm - 5.00pm

Recognising the major influence that planning policy has in shaping places where people live and work, Richard is keen to involve the public in planning policy consultation. The recent changes in National Planning Policy impact on local policy and ultimately how local areas like Marple will be developed. We can expect further consultation this year regarding 18 important sites within Marple and surrounding areas. Come along to find out how we can make the planning system work for us and what we can realistically expect from changes in planning policy.
