Title: Second World War in Marple
Post by: Deniseam on January 26, 2012, 07:21:05 PM
Ludworth School are doing project work on the Second World War with a particular focus on children in the war.  We know there were lots of evacuees sent here during the war and some stayed the duration (Channel Islands children).  While doing research for displays I came across a news article about the Home Guard practicing manouevres near the river by Ludworth.  Mention was made of the Lacrosse field near the Windsor Castle pub.  Anyone know where that was?  Also does anyone have remains of air raid shelters in their gardens etc?

There was an old air raid shelter in the garden of Seventeen Windows but sadly that was demolished when the builders moved in.  There was also a Home Guard hide out built of concrete one of only three in the country.  It was situated behind the last bus stop on the left before going down Dan Bank.  Sadly this was also destroyed when the works on Dan Bank started because the council wanted to use the site as a storage for plant machinery.  It's sad that no one thought to protect these for our future generations  :-\

Does Jack Turnbull's book about Marple, "A Village At War" answer some of your questions, I wonder ?
