Quick reminder about the task day in Memorial Park tomorrow. So long as it doesn't get blown or rained off we should be preparing the Locks Flowerbed to be moved to Oldknow Gardens by clearing the area it is currently in and putting it in storage.

Hope to see you there, weather permitting!

Mark, any idea what happened to the trees that we planted in ht e NE corner of the park, against the Garth Road hedge in October 2007? I can't see anything there any more. I guess that the grass-mowing tractor went over the top of them or they were pulled out by yobbos. The big one against the northern edge, against Station Road is still there.

They were still there last time I checked but that was a couple of months ago. I guess either one of your suggestions is possible but I will look into it.

On a recent tour of the park I was most disappointed to find that someone has broken off several of the welded metal leaves from the Coronation Bench. Must have taken quite an effort so hopefully they felt gratified after their endeavours.

The next weekend Task Day in Memorial Park is Saturday 26th July between 10am and 2pm. As usual everyone is welcome to join in for as long as they wish during these times.

A few volunteers who can make it will also be helping to plant more bedding plants in the ornamental borders on Wednesday 2nd July from 10am. Anyone is welcome to join in too and maybe a week day will suit some better than at the weekend, you never know.

The web site has been updated with a report on the Task Day today, see www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/tasks.htm

Howard - I can confirm that there is little or no sign of the small trees we planted in October, which is a shame. My guess is that the mower went over them. A lesson learnt there I think.

We've also had some more vandalism - this time the solar powered light has been removed from the insect study centre and smashed. Must have been great fun?

The next task day in the park will be held on Saturday 30th August 2008 between 10am and 1pm and we would be delighted if you could come along for however long you can between these times. Stout footwear and suitable clothes should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them. All tools will be provided.

Following on from the task day, starting from 1pm, we will be holding a French Boules Tournament to celebrate the completion of the new Petanque Court in the park. Everyone is welcome to join in - We suggest bringing your own food and drink if you plan to stay a while, and perhaps a chair or blanket to sit on. You can also bring your own set of Boules if you have them but this is not essential. We have no idea how many people will turn up, or what the weather will be like, but we hope to spend an enjoyable afternoon using the new court.

Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The interview will be broadcast again this afternoon at 4.30pm on Pure 107.8FM but Pete has also kindly given us an mpeg copy that we have uploaded to the Friends of the Park site:

There was a good turnout for our fun Petanque Tournament and it seemed like everyone had a great time christening the new French Boules Court yesterday. You can read more about it on the Friends of Memorial Park web site at www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/boules.htm

There are also more picture in the Virtual Tour at  http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=63

Anybody wishing to give the game a try can borrow a set of boules from Bob Wilson, the Community Parks Officer who is usually in the park during normal hours. You will need to pay a £10 deposit, which is fully refundable providing that the set is returned to Bob complete and intact. Alternatively, you can buy an extremely good value set from ALDI in Romiley for only £5 while their stocks last.

We will be planting wildflowers in the Breathing Places behind the library and also in the nature area running down from the cinema and along by the canal. We would like as many people as possible to join in this event, which is part of the BBC "Do One Thing" campaign for local people to do one thing for nature in their area.

The event will run from 10am to 1pm. Everyone is welcome to join in for as long as they wish during these times. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please wear suitable clothing and gloves and bring your own spade or trowel if you can.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park have had another good year but now it's time to get ready for the next!

Despite our successes in the park we could still use a lot more help and if you can spare an hour or two it would be brilliant. All tools will be provided, in fact we've just received a grant award to buy £470 worth of new tools, so next year our shears will actually cut!

Each Task Day is held on the last Saturday of the month (except December) between 10am and 1pm and we’d be delighted if you could come along for however long you can between these times.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them.

Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Here's a calendar of Task Days throughout next year:

Saturday 30 January
Saturday 27 February
Saturday 27 March
Saturday 24 April
Saturday 29 May
Saturday 26 June
Saturday 31 July
Saturday 28 August
Saturday 25 September   18 September
Saturday 30 October
Saturday 27 November

Thought we were going to be rained-off yesterday but things worked out better than expected and we got quite a bit done in the park. Unfortunately the wet did stop us getting stuck into the flowerbeds the way we'd intended but we did manage a bit of work on them.

Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us on our next task day, which is Saturday 26th March. We'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.

A very rewarding task day yesterday with many new volunteers attending for the first time. Unfortunately the plants for the flowerbeds have not arrived yet so the large shrub beds near to the entrance were given a good make-over.

Our next scheduled task day is Saturday 30 April, although if the plants arrive in the next week or so we may have an extra one to get the planting done. We'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.

A very rewarding task day today as we made great in-roads into planting up our five adopted ornamental flower beds. The Rainbows and Beavers are also getting on well with theirs too and all of a sudden the park is looking quite different. A big thank you to all the volunteers who turned up and worked so hard to improve their park. Read more on the Friends of the Park web site:

The next scheduled task day in the park on Saturday 25 June is a special one that coincides with National Civic Day and Marple Civic Society's 50th Anniversary celebrations. The plan is many local groups will work on their chosen project/community work in various locations from 9.30am - 12.30pm on the day and then make their way to Memorial Park in time for a picnic in the park at 1.00pm - 3.00pm.

Of course Friends of Memorial Park will already be there for our task day and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm before joining MCS in celebrating their 50th in the afternoon.

A beautiful day in the park yesterday when, amongst other things we planted a large number of rockery plants, parsley and strawberries provided by local gardeners Les and Jean White, for which we are very grateful. You will often see Les and Jean at local car boot sales selling the things they grow on their allotment but they gave all this to Friends of the Park for free  ;D

It was a lovey sunny day for our special Remembrance weekend Task Day and it's a good job we decided to do this as we discovered that the handrails on the memorial had been vandalised overnight. It's hard to find the words to express our contempt for this kind of act but at least we were in a position to do something about it and were able to carry out a temporary repair.

We had another great response from our volunteers at short notice and people attending the Remembrance Service should be able to see the results. As well as removing leaves and hoeing the flower beds we painted a litter bin that had been desperate for a coat of paint and cleared the leaves all the way down the main drive into the park. It was particularly good to have families with children helping out on a beautiful autumn day. Thank you everyone for your help.

Our last Task Day of 2011 is on Saturday 26 November and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Our last Task Day of 2011 yesterday was quieter in terms of number of volunteers but still achieved a great deal and it's been another successful year. Read about them here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days.html

With the council having to make increased cost savings over the coming years and the proposed transfer of Parks Staff to SSK the role of Friends groups will become even more important if the standards of our parks are to be maintained, let alone improved as we have been doing.

If anyone is interested in helping out in our park we'd love to hear from you.

We were subject to all kinds of weather yesterday but succeeded in planting our new "Rose Wall" hedge around the rear borders of the War Memorial Beds.

We've installed a temporary barrier around the borders to try and protect the roses while they get established. We hope this will encourage people to keep their dogs off the beds and stop walking across them too.

This is part of our plans to commemorate the approaching centenaries of WWI (1914-1918) in the park and we hope it will be well established by 2014.

Pretty much perfect weather for working in the park yesterday with lot of tasks done by local volunteers once again. The main focus was on the Jubilee Bed in front of the library and transplanting of the Polyanthus to a variety of other locations within the park. Picnic benches and the last of the Boules Court benches were treated too.

Brilliant turnout by volunteers today, despite the weather. A good tidy-up of the flowebeds in preparation for the Remembrance Service on 10 November was the main task today.

We also had a formal presentation of our share of Marple in Action's surplus funds and we'd like to thank them very much for that, and everyone who voted for us too.

Bob Wilson's last "working day" in Memorial Park

The weather was very kind on Park Keeper Bob Wilson's last official working day in the park. Bob has taken redundancy / early retirement as part of the council cuts. Bob has spent the last 9 years of his 40 years of employment with Stockport Council, and latterly Solutions SK, in Marple Memorial Park and he is one of the key reasons that it has been so well looked after.

Read more here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2014/211-task-day-29-march-2014.html

Thank you to Arthur Procter for recording Bob's presentation and the end of an era. As a result of the budget cuts there will no longer be a permanent Park Keeper in Memorial Park and nobody is likely to provide the dedication and care that Bob has given to looking after it over the last 9 years. The need for volunteers to help look after the park it is going to be greater than ever, so if you'd like to help the Friends of the Park rise to the challenges that face us please to come and join in!

Celebrating 10 Years of improvements to Marple Memorial Park

A very productive day in the park yesterday with work on the flowerbeds, woodland area, Jubilee Bed, Sensory Bed, graffiti removal and installation of a second new picnic bench in the Infants Play Area for families to enjoy. We also welcomed Marple's Local Councillors to help us fly our new flag to commemorate 10 Years of volunteers working to improve the park.

And The Marple Plumber fitted us an outside tap free of charge! (http://www.marpleplumber.co.uk)

Our task day on Saturday was hampered by high winds and intermittent rain, so we had to stop painting but there was plenty of other work done!

Read more about our task day here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2018.html (http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2018.html)

The next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 11 August and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 2 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves and small hand tools if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

A sad task yesterday was to remove part of the Midnight Tree Sculpture that we created in the park back in 2007.

Lots of other more positive work was completed too and it was great to see kids playing on our latest addition to the Infants Play Area.

It speaks volumes when people say thanks and or they are vocally appreciative of the time and efforts of the volunteers.

This coming winter, such appreciation will be even more welcomed considering the bite of the cold and the snow.

I at least hope the snow doesn't come until much later.

We squeezed in an extra task day last Saturday and the council has been working hard in the park all week too, so yesterday we were able to focus on the final touches before Remembrance Sunday today. With the Timeline complete and lots of work in the park including re-tarmacking of the main paths and the area where stone was stolen from the park entrance, weeds cleared by the Payback Team and leaves blown by the park attendants, the park is as ready as it can be for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

A good turn-out for our final task day of 2018, taking the total for the year to 24, and over 1,000 volunteer hours worked since January. Today's efforts included a tidy up of flowerbeds front and rear of the library, litter-picking, planting bulbs, clearing leaves from the car park and driveway, clearing windfall branches from the park and even clearing the access to Asda.

Free* trip to the Windmill Pub on New Horizons for Friends of the Park

Friends of Marple Memorial Park benefited from a win of the annual £10 New Horizons Float the Boat Draw with a free trip on the canal boat for the disabled on Sunday.

What a great day out and excellent lunch at the Windmill at Whitely Green.

Everyone should support this wonderful charity by Floating the Boat for just £10 a year:  https://www.newhorizons.org.uk/float-the-boat.html (https://www.newhorizons.org.uk/float-the-boat.html)

* although the trip was a free prize we did have a whip-round and made a donation to New Horizons!

The flowerbeds are filling out nicely and the park is starting to look its very best, so it was great to get out there in the sunshine with our regular volunteers. Lots of work was done in the flowerbeds and the shrub beds, including trying out our new "Pullerbear" all the way from Canada. This is a special tool for pulling out small to medium self-seeded saplings and it works brilliantly.

Well that was a wet one with only the diehards coming out to play! We worked mainly on the borders alongside the pathway to the Reading Circle behind the library and it looked a bit of a mess by the time we'd finished. This is because we have placed an order for a contractor to come and resurface the circle and pathway in around a month's time. The pathway is to be widened to comply with the latest requirements for wheelchairs (it did comply when we created the Reading Circle in 2008 but recommendations have changed a little) so we moved as many plants as we could out of the way. Once the work is done we can then have a good sort out and get it back to its best.

We recently received a selection of donated plants from the council, so focused mainly on planting those and tidying the Bandroom garden and the shrub bed alongside the path to Station Road yesterday.

Our volunteers weren't put off by the early showers yesterday and enjoyed mainly sunshine with another shower at tea break. This time we were mostly back on the main flowerbeds, where there was lots of work to do thanks to the weather.

We almost cancelled yesterday due to the rain but decided to give it a go. A surprising number of volunteers turned up and we managed to get some work done on the war memorial beds, complete a litter-pick and plant four trees donated by a local resident. Earlier this week we were delighted to unveil the cobbled setts we've had laid in from of Danny Winter's bench. This small project has been funded by Friends of the Park, with a very generous contribution from Danny's family too.

A smaller than usual band of volunteers today enjoyed a surprise visit from the sunshine. Unfortunately the park was still so wet that it wasn't possible to work on the flowerbeds without making a mess of the grass, so we focused on litter-picking and clearing weeds from the main entrance to the park, the car park and pathways. We also carried out a gentle crown-lift of branches at eye-level on trees throughout the park.

Who doesn't love Apple Pie! Or Crumble, or what's your favourite?

During Friends of Marple Memorial Park's task day on Saturday 26th there will be some fabulous cooking apples near the park collection bucket at the War Memorial.

Come help yourself to a few and leave a donation for the park.

In order to catch-up and have the War Memorial and flowerbed areas looking the best they could we were also in the park on Tuesday 5th, when we added new commemorative flags and wreaths to the railings, Wednesday 6th and Friday 8th, when our volunteers worked closely with council operatives who were cutting the grass and clearing leaves from the park.

Yesterday, as well as putting the finishing touches to the area where the Remembrance Service will take place, we picked litter, cleared leaves from around the library, mowed the lawn in the Band Room garden, trimmed shrubs and bushes around Hollins House and began work on clearing stones and seeding the the top section of the area used by CRT as their compound during the refurbisment of Lock 11. This is a new project that should see a wildflower meadow in the park next summer.

Our Task Day last weekend was cancelled due to the dreadful weather, so when we heard the forecast for today on Friday we decided to squeeze a replacement session in. Considering only 24 hours notice we had a brilliant turnout. Back in February we also grabbed the opportunity to plant nine new trees in the gap in the woodland left by the works to repair Lock 11. The trees were paid for by CRT and our volunteers were helped by the Council's Neighbourhood Team.

Returning to our normal schedule of task days meant we were back in the park again yesterday and also launching this year's "Little Growers" events for 2020. The weather was much better and allowed us to set-up outside the library and engage with families using the play areas. We planted pots of seeds with 22 Little Growers, which was a great start to the season.

Out in the park, the main task was planting several 100 native whips - these are small bare-rooted tree saplings - mostly in the area where the Lock 11 compound caused the removal of trees and ground cover. We planted whips in several other areas of the park too and sowed some wildflower seed mix around the new trees planted in February.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park Task Days on Hold

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's normal Task Days have been placed on hold for the immediate future, until it is safe to meet in groups again.

Sadly that means that we will not be able to hold any further "Little Growers" sessions planned for March and April either.

During the coming weeks we will be forced to spend less time in the park, so if you spot any issues that you think will concern us, please report it via the Friends of the Park web site.

AT LAST we're officially allowed back in the park!

Following release of guidance from the council and the production and approval of our own special risk assessment covering Covid19 precautions, our volunteers are now officially allowed back in the park. So we held our first authorised task day since March on Wednesday and it was all very different to how it used to be. In order to ease our way into it we returned with restricted numbers. Volunteers were asked to bring their own tools wherever possible and bins and communal tools were cleaned going in and out of the store and then "owned" by one individual for the session or cleaned again.

Thankfully small groups of volunteers and family units have come into the park of their own volition for exercise during the last  few months and kept on top of the flowerbeds and other key maintenance. This is why the park is looking so good and if not for this it would be in a very sorry state. We thank everyone who took it upon themselves to do so.

Border re-edged on Lock 17

Did you know that Friends of Marple Memorial Park look after the Lock 17 Flowerbed on Oldknow Gardens as well as the park? They recreated this bed in partnership with Marple Locks Heritage Society (now defunct) and the council. It was funded by the council, Marple Area Committee and The Marple Website, whose logo is cast in bronze on the plaque dedicated to Gordon Mills.

Task Day 18 August 2020

We managed to hit a weather window with minimal rain during our task day today but it was hard work clearing the new wildflower meadow area of dead vegetation as it had all received a good soak this morning! We'll be back to finish it off.

Other tasks completed include maintenance work on the War Memorial flowerbeds, tidying the sensory garden, litter-picking and the Marple Band Room hedge was given a much needed pruning.

One of our volunteers has also been doing much needed maintenance work on the picnic benches at Marple Recreation Ground. Well somebody's got to do it haven't they! We should soon have the missing slat from the centre of one of these benches back in place and hopefully these two benches restored by us in 2013 will be good for another few years.

Task Day 27 August 2020

The weather is really not playing ball with our preparation works for the wildflower meadow but we continued stripping off dead vegetation to prevent it enriching the soil. The meadow area will be harrowed and stripped a couple more times and it would be great to have some prolonged sunshine to kill off the weeds and make lighter work of stripping them off by hand.

Work was also done on the flowerbeds, the Band Room garden, the Reading Circle borders, litter-picking and a tool store tidy.

Reading Circle Tree Sculpture

We also managed to get the council's Arb Team to cut the bottoms off the last two sections of the broken sculpture from behind the library. Visitors to the park may have noticed that the sculpture has been dismantled after we discovered it broken in July. Unfortunately the base has been decaying from underneath and one section broke off during lock-down, leaving the other two very wobbly. We asked the council to take down the remaining sections and the Arb Team has now cut the rotten bits off all three sections of the sculpture for us so that we can look at the feasibility of resetting them on metal bases.

Task Day 26 September 2020

It was great to notch up our first official Saturday Task Day since 14 March, even though we have to restrict numbers to comply with Government guidance. Park visitors must have been pleased to see us too as they left over £30 in our collection bucket!

We focused mainly on flowerbed maintenance and edging of the main pathway through the park. The latter is one of those things that you don't really notice when it's done but certainly do when it isn't. It looks so much better now.

Read more about our task days here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2020.html (http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2020.html)

The next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 17 October 2020 but is open to existing registered volunteers only due to Covid19.

Infants Play Area fence damage

Park users may have noticed that a large section of the Infants Play Area fence behind the swings has recently gone missing. This is due to it being vandalised by some of our less intelligent visitors to the park.

The whole of the fence has been past its sell-by date for some time. The Friends of the Park have kept it going for quite a few years by painting and maintaining but we now consider it beyond our abilities to deal with any longer.

The council will be installing some temporary fencing in the coming week and we hope that this will tide us over while we pursue our plans to merge and upgrade the two existing play areas. This is at a very early stage (with no funding) and is linked to the Community Hub project to bring the swimming pool to the park. So sadly it is not going to happen overnight.

Task Day 10 October 2020

The weather forecast for this weekend was far better at the start of the week, so we brought our planned task day forward. However, the park was so wet yesterday that we couldn't work on the grassed areas without doing damage, so we focused on tidying shrub borders that could be accessed from tarmac. This included the Infants Play Area, the border from the library woodland to the Band Room and we also made a start on the one next to Hollins House too.

Task Day 24 October 2020

Better weather yesterday meant that we could at last get back onto the flowerbeds, where we finally managed to distribute the mushroom compost that was delivered too late to go on the beds earlier this year. We also worked on shrub beds by the side of Hollins House and down towards the band room. The usual litter pick was conducted, two Rowan trees donated by a member of the public were planted and the war memorial and noticeboards given a clean too.

We also managed to get onto the wildflower meadow area at last and get some stone-picking done.

About the Wildflower Meadow

Our plans for the wildflower meadow had been severely disrupted by Covid19 and visitors to the park throughout lock-down and beyond may have wondered what's happening to the field used as a compound during the repairs to Lock 11 completed in May 2019. The Canal and River Trust had handed over funds and seed to Friends of the Park and Stockport Council's Neighbourhood Team in order to turn the area into a wildflower meadow and we were all set to sow the seed in late March. Like everything else, this was stopped in its tracks due to the pandemic but of course nature didn't take any notice and grass and weeds returned with a vengeance. Since restrictions eased the weather hasn't played ball very much but the area has been re-harrowed twice and the wildflower seed was sown recently.

Apart from picking stones that have risen to the surface due to harrowing and the rain, it's now a waiting game and, hopefully, as well as life getting back to normal in Marple as spring returns next year, we'll also be able to enjoy a great display of wildflowers in the park.

Task Day 4 November 2020

With Lockdown 2 looming we decided a final tidy-up of the main flowerbeds and war memorial beds was essential in order to be in the best possible shape for this year's Remembrance, whatever that may be. The main activities were weeding, trimming and tidying the beds, raising a new Remembrance flag and adding fresh wreaths to the railings at the war memorial and the timeline. We also managed a litter-pick, filled in ruts caused by a police vehicle in the park and did a serious and long overdue hack-back of the rhododendrons in one of the shrub beds.

We were joined by council officer Wayne, who did a final picking of stones from the wildflower meadow area too. The council team were also out in force, clearing leaves from the main drive and car park.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park Website Upgrade

We can't do Task Days at the moment but it's been head-down for most of January 2021 here at The Marple Website working on the upgrade / migration of the Friends of Marple Memorial Park website. Still a long way to go to get all those amazing task days moved across and there are still some projects and events to add too but there's plenty to read about to be going on with...

Task Day 17 April 2021

Friends of the Park officially get back to work at last!

Following clearance from the council to return to the park for our task days the weather played ball and treated us to some much needed sunshine.

The principal task was to get back on top of the main flowerbed maintenance but we also got stuck into treating of benches, removal of self-seeded saplings in the shrub beds and litter-picking throughout the park. We also planted some fruit bushes donated by a Marple resident and cleared out the Bowling Pavilion canopy ready for the start of the Bowling season.

Earlier this month we also got work back underway in the Bandroom Garden.

Task Day 1 May 2021

We were delighted by how many people thanked us for our efforts today!

Tasks included cutting down a dead willow in the woodland area and using the arisings to create a bug hotel, continuing our catch-up on bench refurbishments, litter-picking, clearing broken glass and lots of work on the main flowerbeds and war memorial beds. We also planted some donated fruit trees and unblocked a drain!

We were joined this time by a team from Marple Allotment Association, who did a lot of work to bring their fruit and veg plot in the park back to life.

We had an outdoor (socially distanced) tea break and park visitors kindly donated over £21 in our bucket. Thank you!

A couple more Town Centre Benches treated while it's not raining!

We thought Derby Way would be quiet on a Sunday morning but there were lots of people out and about while we sanded and treated the two benches there.

It was good to see both cafes being well used and thank you to the Golden Plate and The Locks Coffee House and Bar for their generous provision of refreshments as we finished our chores.

A big thanks also to the kind gentleman who donated £20 to Friends of the Park!

Task Day 12 June 2021

Everything is growing so quickly now and there's lots of work for our volunteers!

Now that we are allowed to use power-tools in the park again we were able to catch-up on maintenance of the bandroom garden by strimming (with our new cordless strimmer) and mowing the grass. Lots more work on the flowerbeds too, which are now filling out nicely thanks to the sunshine.

We also gave shrubs alongside Hollins House a good pruning and others cleared weeds from the park entrance on Stockport Road, which has made a huge improvement.

Friends of Memorial Park need access to an outside / accessible tap on Market Street or Derby Way please! Can you help?

Friends of the Park are working our way through retreating of the timber slats on the town centre benches but we'd also like to clean and paint the metal ends too. Ideally for this we would need access to an outside tap so we could wash and rinse the ends before painting. Does your premises or residence have a suitable tap we can use please?

Task Day 17 July 2021

A shortened task day today due to the heat but our volunteers still managed a long list of tasks by midday including: litter-picking; grass-cutting in the bandroom garden; tidying of the Scout Hut bed; planting in the Sensory Garden; edging of flowerbeds; sanding and treating benches; strimming around the 5-a-side goalposts and planting foxgloves in the woodland areas, where we at least found some shade. The allotment team were also in action keeping on top of weeds and edging their plot.

Task Day 7 August 2021

The forecast August downpours were fairly kind to Friends of Marple Memorial Park volunteers yesterday, allowing us a couple of hours grace before a good soaking. This enabled us to make good progress on a tidy-up of the main flowerbeds and the war memorial beds. Other tasks included litter-picking, mowing of the band room garden and the 5-a-side goals and treatment of a couple of benches.

Task Day 28 August 2021

A beautiful day to be working in the sunshine yesterday saw Friends of Marple Memorial Park focus on hedges and shrubs, with work around Hollins House, the war memorial beds and the Bandroom garden. Other jobs tackled included cleaning display boards, touch-up painting of the railings in front of the house, much needed watering of Danny Winter's pots and the endless task of keeping the flowerbeds at their best.

Town Centre Benches on the Hollins completed for 2021

The last two benches on the Hollins were sanded and treated on Monday and we've nearly caught up after Covid delays in 2020.

Just two benches left on Market Street, which we hope to manage before the Food and Drink Festival on Saturday if the weather and other commitments allow.

One nice coincidence we learned is that it was the late Marshall Shaw's birthday on the same day we treated his bench.

Town Centre Benches all caught up in time for Food and Drink Festival

We were delighted the weather held yesterday, allowing us to complete re-treatment of the last two benches on Market Street this year. That means we have caught-up with the lost year due to the Covid19 pandemic and all 17 Town Centre Benches have been re-treated by Friends of the Park in time for the 2021 Food and Drink Festival.

Next year we would still like to clean up and repaint the metalwork too and it would be easier if we had access to an outside tap. Is there an owner of a business premises or residence in the Market Street area that could help us with this please?

Task Day 23 October 2021

Today the Marple Poppy Appeal Team will launch this year's campaign by commemorating the 100th year of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

They are doing this with a Ride of Remembrance from Compstall to Memorial Park featuring 100 motorbikes each carrying a large poppy to be added to the Wall of Remembrance in the park.

This promises to be a great spectacle and Friends of the Park spent yesterday's task day tidying the flowerbeds and war memorial area in preparation for today's event. We also planted the last of the shrubs donated to us by a local resident, which led to a great photo of our father and daughter volunteer team, who have done a wonderful job for us over the last year.

Visitors to the park kindly donated over £15 in our collection bucket, thank you! However, to the lady who came up and told one of our volunteers that you had put £1 in the bucket but you would give more if Friends of the Park disassociated ourselves with the skatepark, we will be passing your money onto the Poppy Appeal. The park is for everyone and we are very proud of our success in building this great facility for the young people of Marple.

Installation of Nativity Sculptures on Market Street

It's become a traditional way for Friends of Marple Memorial Park to end the year and it's now an annual task for us to install and remove the Nativity Sculptures in the Town Centre.

We took over the task of storing and managing the sculptures from Churches Together, who were having trouble handling them when stored at All Saints' Church. It's much easier for us to keep them at the park and we can transport them to Market Street without vehicles, so much greener too!

It was great fun to supervise our team of volunteers as they did their community service this morning!

Task Day 29 January 2022

It was great to get our Friends of Marple Memorial park volunteers back into the park for the first time this year yesterday, despite nearly getting blown away by high winds.

Efforts were focused on a general tidy of of the main flowerbeds. We spread some new top soil on the Sensory Garden opposite the Scout Hut as part of our tidy-up there and replanted Danny Winter's pots too. We also spread some top soil along the top edge of the skatepark to fill the gap between the concrete and grass that had been developing.

Task Day 26 February 2022

During yesterday's task day most of our volunteers focused on a good tidy-up of the Reading Circle behind the library, including planting-up of the trough in our new Canal Frog Rose. We hope that visitors will enjoy this new addition to the park but please refrain from climbing on it and trampling the plants. Other activities included a big clear-up of broken branches and twigs from recent storms, extensive litter-picking and glass clearing thanks to our overnight park visitors, a tidy-up of the annoying mud puddle at the park entrance and installation of the boards for our new Pavilion Art Project Phase II - look out for more on that soon.

Great support from the community

A very big thank you to the lady who donated £100 to Friends of the Park and the kind gentleman who presented us with a cake from Archer's for our tea break. It was very nice indeed!

Task Day 26 March 2022

A really busy and productive day saw our volunteers cleaning under the former Bowling Pavilion canopy ready for painting before we install our centenary artwork later in the year. We also chopped up a huge tree branch that had been brought down by high winds earlier in the year and created a small wildlife haven from the arisings. Many other volunteers got stuck into flowerbed maintenance behind the library, in the Jubilee bed in front of the library, the toilet block bed, and of course the main flowerbeds and memorial beds. We also got started on annual maintenance such as painting the edges of the steps at the Bowling Green the exact same colour as the fabulous display of daffodils throughout the park.

Task Day 30 April 2022

Today's tasks included preparing and seeding the circular bed with wildflowers and doing the same in the borders leading to the Reading Circle behind the library. This is the first time we've done this and we're looking forward to the results. We also worked on the Band Room garden, planted some donated Gunnera, began painting under the former Bowling Pavilion canopy, cleaned up the Toddler's Play Area sign, removed a fallen tree from one of the shrub beds and did lots of watering.

While working on the Reading Circle we were delighted when one of the library staff came out and told us they are planning to use the area for story time as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We were also pleased to see that replacement of the broken windows on Hollins House is finally underway - it looks so much better!

Task Day 14 May 2022

This was our first mid-month Task Day of 2022 and despite a smaller turnout than our end of month ones we got a great deal of work done. Flowerbeds were weeded, lots of work was done in the Band Room Garden and progress was made on maintaining steps and benches. In particular, the back of the Coronation Bench was given a much needed clean-up and repaint. We also planted our recent purchases from Marple Scouts in the Sensory Bed opposite the Scout Hut for them to enjoy.

We were saddened that vandals have seen fit to destroy 3 new trees near to the Infants Play Area. These were planted by the council at our request and we were watering them regularly to ensure they survived the dry weather. It's hard to understand what motivates anyone to attack our efforts to improve and maintain the park.

Better news is that we remembered to put our collection bucket out this time and park visitors rewarded us by depositing almost £22!

Near where I lived previously the council would - every year - plant some new trees near the station. And every year - without fail - someone would destroy at least one of them.  The next year a replacement would be installed.  And the same thing would happen again.

Those who seek to make things better, I totally get.  But I will never ever understand such people who are happy to destroy.

Task Day 28 May 2022

We fell lucky with the weather and got a huge amount done in the park today. Tasks included a concerted effort to weed and tidy the War Memorial Beds. The low hedge was trimmed and the border redefined on one side too. We also did a bit of tidying in the Reading Circle, as it is going to be used for Story Time by the library on Monday.

We tried out our new cordless battery powered lawnmower in the Band Room garden and the new strimmer too. These have been purchased along with standard and long reach hedge-cutters with an award we received from the Stockport CAN Fund that has allowed us to remove our dependency on petrol powered tools. We were delighted with the results.

We also put a final coat of paint on the Coronation Bench (after another volunteer did the first coat of the seat last week) and it is now ready for the tree to be decorated as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Marple Tree Trail. Two of our volunteers also removed the remains of the 3 trees broken by vandals and the stakes that were driven a long way down.

Earlier this week one of our volunteers also finished painting the library steps and repaired a bench that had lost a slat.

Park visitors donated over £22 in our bucket too, thank you!

Task Day 11 June 2022

Vandals caused a disappointing start to Friends of Marple Memorial Park task day yesterday!

We arrived at the park to discover vandalism to the roof of the former Bowling Pavilion and to the Infants Play Area fence yet again. This is the fourth time vandals have deliberately and systematically damaged the fencing around the play area, resulting in costs to the council and Friends of the Park that could have been spent on making improvements.

Fortunately we had come armed with the right tools for another job and were able to replace all the slats that had been kicked off by the time we left the park. If you see anyone doing damage like this again please report to the police.

Of course we did get some positive work done and also popped back this morning to catch-up on a job we didn't do yesterday because we were re-fixing vandalised fence slats!

It takes so much effort to vandalise. I don't know why they bother.  The answer is to put things right as soon as possible.  So well done to all concerned.

Task Day 25 June 2022

Our volunteers were all over the place yesterday, with mowing and strimming in the Band Room garden, treating benches, trimming hedge and grass borders, weeding flowerbeds, watering new plants, clearing shrubs obstructing the handrails in front of Hollins House, picking litter and even painting the Infants Play Area fence ready for our School Gardens Project.

The park is looking amazing, thank you to the park visitors who popped almost £18 in our collection bucket and obviously agree.

30 June 2022: Marple School Gardens Project: Infrastructure Build Day

The Marple School Gardens Project finally got underway publicly today with the building of the raised beds in the park ready for All Saints' and St. Mary's Schools to plant them up during week commencing 11 July. Today it was assembling the sleepers and filling with soil carried out by Friends of the Park. A big thank you to Andy Manc James, our local Dyno-Rod man who helped deliver the sleepers to the park, and to Offerton Sand and Gravel's driver Neil, who made a precision early morning delivery of topsoil for us to avoid problems in the car park.

Sunday 10 July 2022: Everything ready for planting!

So tempting to show you photos of the fantastic backing boards created by All Saints' and St. Mary's for the Marple School Gardens Project but you're going to have to wait until tomorrow!

The raised beds are going to be planted up by pupils and teachers 10am to 2pm on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th July when all will be revealed.

Task Day 16 July 2022

An early start on Saturday due to the forecast heatwave saw most of our volunteers pile onto the main flowerbeds in order that they will look their best next Sunday 24th July, when the Brass Bands of Marple will be playing their Picnic in the Park concert to commemorate the park's 100th birthday.

Other tasks included bench maintenance, Band Room garden maintenance, watering of the new School Gardens, hedge trimming in the Infants Play area and clearing stray brambles along the woodland path in advance of the Family Treasure Hunt next Saturday.

Task Day 27 August 2022

Yesterday we focused on the Infants Play Area, with a good tidy-up of shrubs and more fence painting. Of course there was work done on the main flowerbeds too, and also at the toilet block, the Reading Circle, on the shrubs around Hollins House and litter picking. We also had a special treat at tea break, with an amazing pork pie and fruit tart from the wonderful Archer's Bakery.

Lock 17 on Oldknow Gardens

Friends of Marple Memorial Park have strayed outside the park today and had a good tidy-up of Lock 17 on Oldknow Gardens.

Here are some before and after photos. Isn't that better!

Task Day 10 September 2022

Friends of the Park were busy in the park again yesterday, and with hedge trimming at the Band Room a little bit overdue we were delighted with the performance of our new battery-powered hedge cutters purchased with our Stockport CAN Fund Award back in May this year. Volunteers also got stuck into maintenance of the main flowerbeds, which are now starting to turn.

As autumn approaches it's also time to begin dismantling the School Gardens and St. Mary's responded very quickly to our request to remove plants, so theirs was the first to go. All plants are being reused by the schools and we have plans for the backing boards to reappear in the park soon. We are also recycling the timber and sleepers at the allotment bed in front of Hollins House. This follows on from Marple Allotment Association giving up the beds after more than 10 years. So we are planning to give them a boost by creating raised vegetable beds at the rear.

Infants Play Area picnic bench tops

On Friday, following the great work done by AstraZeneca to create hard-standings under the benches, we installed one of the picnic bench top that we've had in our store for a while. The first one is a little town-scape that is perfect for toy vehicles. The second, which should be installed soon, is a bit more educational.

The tops have been funded by our 50-50 Club and we hope that families with young children enjoy them.

PS: Wednesday 31st August

I forgot to mention that Friends of the Park were pleased to welcome 21 AstraZeneca employees to Marple Memorial Park as part of a scheme to give back to the community. It was certainly a great benefit for us to receive help with painting of the Infants Play Area fence and pruning of four large shrub beds. The volunteers also tackled a job we'd been planning to do ourselves, which was to create new hard-standings under the two Infants Play Area picnic benches. This was a real bonus as they paid for the materials as well as doing a great job!

Task Day 24 September 2022

In many ways yesterday was a normal and productive task day for Friends of the Park volunteers but one tinged with sadness caused by disheartening vandalism to a much-loved mature tree in the park by persons unknown. We clearly share that sadness with young people who use the park and felt compelled to publish a public statement about the criminal damage caused to the white Birch tree near to Lock 11. It's important to us to make sure local people do not think it was Friends of the Park volunteers who carried out this despicable act.

The statement is here: https://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/notices/tree-near-to-lock-11.html

In terms of work done, we dismantled the remaining School Gardens bed created by All Saints' School and relocated most of the soil to what will become our new raised allotment bed. We also did a lot of tidy-up to the Reading Circle behind the library and some shrub-tidying at the Bandroom Garden. Later, we went and tidied up the branches left strewn around the woodland by the vandals and created some potential wildlife habitats. It was during this activity that we discovered posters left by young people who have been saddened too.
