Bradshawe's Ghost

BRADSHAWE'S GHOST by lain McLean

John Bradshawe

The story of the President of an English republic, 1649 to 1653

On 28th June 2001 Stockport Heritage Trust brings out a short book on the life of a remarkable man, locally born John Bradshawe the judge who tried and sentenced Charles I to death, and then served as England's head of state for the next four years.

Bradshawe's Ghost is a double first. Until now no life of the President (whom the author has described as "England's Dirty Secret") has ever been published. This is also the first book to bear the imprint of Stockport Heritage Trust.

Bradshawe's Ghost, which arose from performances given by the author at HatWorks (the Museum of Hatting, Stockport), is unusual in telling the factual tale of its subject in the first person. It prefigures a more conventional biography of John Bradshawe, which lain McLean and Heritage Trust co-founder Steve Cliffe are researching.
