Dear Councillor Candler,

Re: Iron Bridge, Brabyns Park, Marple

As you know, following my discussion with you regarding the bridge in June of this year, I received a copy of a letter addressed to yourself from John R Davies, Project Specialist (Conservation), dated 19 July 2001.

We were greatly encouraged by this letter as it explained that investigations were underway to ascertain both the best way in which the bridge could be repaired and the associated costs of this work. Furthermore, the letter indicated that these investigations were being carried out with a view to enabling action by the Council in partnership with local historical and civic societies to restore the bridge.

As the letter also stated, on 12 July 2001 council representatives were accompanied on a site visit by a specialist contractor whose credentials for work of this nature appear to be eminently suitable.

As approximately 10 weeks have passed since this site visit and John Davies' letter, we feel that it is now a reasonable time to enquire how this matter is progressing.

You may be aware that we have begun campaigning for the restoration of the iron bridge on the Marple Website and an article about this was also featured in the September issue of the Community News. As a result of these we are also in touch with another party who has been campaigning for restoration of the bridge for rather longer than we have. We are keen to maintain momentum and keep the focus on this issue and would like to be able to advise the community that progress is being made.

If there is anyway in which we can assist the Council in this matter, either through the web site or by writing to local organisations for their support, we would be delighted to discuss this with you. In the meantime we hope that you will be able to provide us with a progress update in the very near future.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Clarke,
For the Marple Website.
