RYA Catalogue 2001
Books, RYA Publications, Videos & CD's
Covers every aspect of water sport and includes a wide range of books which support dinghy sailing, see John the Com for more details. These booklets are not dear [Handy guide to racing rules £2.50,] and will make an excellent Birthday or Christmas stocking filler. The Club will be purchasing some books as we have received a £6.00 voucher. Hopefully a small Library can be set up for members to loan these little gems.

2 Club notices in blue
3 General Notices in green

Members Information Folder - Includes all aspects of Club related subjects that all members will be encouraged to read and digest.

Jnr. Members Information Folder - Hopefully in this folder we will encourage all juniors to add their voice to what should be included

New Roof for Club
The idea of having a pitched roof has proved to be expensive. Structural Engineers report cost? Structural implementation cost? Planning application cost? Plan Drawing cost? Finally actually doing the work cost! The recommendation how ever is to stay with the existing flat roof design, but to improve the pitch from rear to front. Improve insulation. Removing the parapet along the front of the roof thus reducing the amount of rainwater being channeled to two outlets but allowing rainwater to drain evenly from the roof into a new roof gutter situated 12" or 300mm overhanging the front of the Club, thereby keeping the water off the frontage.

New Boats in the Yard

Awards for All grants
We have submitted an application form for this years small grants award to purchase 3 new Topper Sailboats. If we are successful our development will be on target for much needed equipment to encourage more juniors on the water. This years referee is Danny Cullianne Sports Manager SMBC Many thanks to Danny.

Fire Prevention advice.
Please ensure that the Patio Door is always unlocked whilst members are in the Club room.
In order to remind us that the door is unlocked and not to vacate the premises unsecured. It has been recommended that a burgee flag is located near to the patio door as an indicator.

Cheshire Life Magazine
An excellent article has been written on Compstall and mention of the Club has been included with a good picture of sailing on the lake.
See Steve Hayton at the Village Post Office for your copy. It is hoped that a print of this picture can be purchased by the Club to add to the picture wall The vacant wall no longer used for notices is for Photo's of the year.

News from the Scriptorium
As members will know, the Commodore took steps this year to enable members to pay their renewal subscriptions either by Standing Order [of 10 monthly payments] or by the traditional one -off payment. This was, in part to offset the subscription increase but also because it was believed that the majority of members wished to pay by Standing Order. In fact, very few members actually took up the Standing Order option - so few that it has been necessary to write out again and request subscription renewal payment by the one off method. I won't rabbit on about subscriptions being the life blood of any club, nor the Treasurer's impending nervous breakdown, but just say that in view of the anticipated extraordinary expenditure this year [the roof!], the treasurer has asked me to ask you - no beg you - to make your renewal payment as soon as possible.

The Marple & New Mills District Round Table Annual Charity Raft Race

Working party Required for Tidying Up
Volunteers are required for tidying up the Club outside area in April. Setting up the Gazebo for the summer is always a good laugh! Any weekend to suit.

Club Bar License
The Bar license has been renewed for 3 years. following a visit to Stockport Magistrates Court on February 15th 2001.
This has been the first time a renewal has gone through without any hitches. So it is congratulations to all who voted to change the constitution allowing each Adult member one vote.
Standing in the dock awaiting a license renewal is okay But you do feel a little embarrassed phoning Norman the Treasurer on the mobile, with everyone watching you and the Magistrate is sitting at the bench drumming her fingers on the bench enquiring! why has the £16,00 license fee not been paid?

View from the Bank
From the place where we keep our money, that is! You are a member of a successful club and this is reflected in our current bank balance which is healthier than I have ever known it during 15 years as Treasurer. Which is just as well since, as you probably know, our club-house roof is failing, in urgent need of renewal, it's going to cost a lorra, lorra dough, much more than we've got at the moment. The good news is we're getting there. The bad news...not fast enough. We need to find more money fast and the best way, we think-rather than increasing subs or raising a levy-is to hold fund raising events such as the mini auction, organised by Vivienne last month. This event made over a £100,00 towards the cost and I'd like to thank all those who attended and supported this event. Which brings me to my point. The success of these monthly socials depends on good attendance's to make the efforts of the organisers worth while. So please do your bit by coming along. You'll have a good time, guaranteed and you'll be contributing to keeping the roof over our head. And if anyone wants to do a bit more by actually organising an event or has a good idea for one, don't be shy. After all its your club too!

The Club Room
The Club room has been hired out twice this year by Club members. If you have an event to Celebrate, the room can accommodate 45 persons for £25.00. All proceeds to the roof appeal. Meet the Bar Secretary on Thursday evening prior to the event to discuss Bar requirements, so as to ensure the right drinks are on tap.
Club Social front

Many thanks to Jerry & Veronica for the New Years Eve Dinner Party
Sheila for Millionaires Night in January
Norman & Vivienne for Auction Night in February
These fund raising events will help to pay towards the roof repairs.
Please remember,
Club subscription only pays for the annual expenditure, Rates, Insurance, Electric Rents for the Yard. etc. hence the annual fees are low!
All improvements to the Club are by fund raising events. The more fund raising events we have, the more improvements we make..

Steve Lee & Family have decided to abandon ship. May we wish you all the best of good luck and please come back to see us at the puddle some day

Etherow Model Boat Club Annual open day 1st Sunday in June. The use of the Club will be used for displaying all model Boats

Captains Report
With spring fast approaching the spring series racing will soon be upon us. And with the warmer weather that spring brings we can look forward to two races on Sundays. The Clocks will go forward soon so with lighter nights Thursday night racing will also commence soon.
There are several Open Meetings planned over the coming season. The first meeting will be a Single Handed Open Meeting and will take place on Sunday May 6th. And is open to any single Handed Dinghies that are under 16 feet. There is a second open meeting for single-handed boats on Sunday July 1st. At Errwood this is a team event with six people sailing for an hour each. The third event is the Southport 24 Hour at Southport in September. This is an Enterprise / GP open and we need a Twelve-man team to compete. Will anybody who is interested please contact Andrew Cross or leave your name on the notice board. Etherow has being fortunate to escape the Foot and Mouth restrictions whoever a good deal of the rural clubs have not been so fortunate and obviously these events are subject to members having access to their waters. On a final note the Sunday spring series starts on Sunday 25th of March and the first race will be at 1.30 p.m.
Autumn look forward
The next newsletter will be in the Autumn. If you would like to write an article about any item dealing with Club or sailing activities please do not hesitate to put pen to paper. Juniors are particularly encouraged to try their skills in writing an article. You may never know who will read your article, as this newsletter can be viewed throughout the world
